Hunters,. I need a new rifle. I bought a 6.5 mememoor to hunt coyotes with.

Hunters,
I need a new rifle. I bought a 6.5 mememoor to hunt coyotes with. It's heavy with the optic on but that was OK because all my coyote hunting was static and with a tripod.
I got invited for a deer hunt last weekend and had to carry this rifle around all weekend and it was a bit too much to walk 15 miles a day with so I need something lighter.

I am going to be Elk hunting next weekend and was curious if you guys had any recommendations for a caliber that might work with deer and Elk?
All the shots I could have taken on deer were 400+ yards and the Elk we will be hunting should be sub 100yards.
I was thinking something like .300 WinMag since at the longer deer ranges it wouldn't cavitate as much and would still have enough energy to drop Elk at closer range.
Any recommendations?

300wm is the most popular for a reason. It'll get you out easily as far as it's ethical to hunt, it'll stay over 1000 ftlbs far longer than 308. Although sub-300yd frankly 308 itself should be fine for anything if you're a decent shot. 300wm is definitely a lot more recoil though, and dunno if I'd call it super light either. For those kinds of ranges what optic were you using? You shouldn't need something big and heavy, even irons can do ok at <100-200yd and a basic 3-6x fixed or flipmag is good. I'd normally expect a decent 6.5 bolt to be the lighter choice and fine for all normal hunting, are you sure about your platform? The main reason for 300wm would be heavier stuff like elk, normally at least where I've been elk tend to be longer not closer range. At 100yd though it shouldn't be needed.

I had a Poortex Viper PST Gen II 5x25 FFP on it. Was way too bulky but thats all I had.
      Thank you for the insight.

      > I need a lighter rifle

      > Was thinking 300mag

      Just stay home

my rifle weighs 12.5lbs with the scope.
I found six WinMags that weigh under 6.5lbs.
maybe be less of a retard?

JFC, just get an ultralight 30-06 you zoomer gay

I'm 33 years old. nice projection though.

I have. what are you? a bitch?
I've fired all the big hunting calibers in ultralight configurations. recoil doesn't mean fuck all when you're making less than 5 shots throughout the entirety of Elk and Deer season.

Just get a fucking sling, 6.5 creedmoor is plenty for elk within 100 yards

The problem is moreover that the rifle is extremely front heavy due to it's fluted heavy barrel.
I have a sling but 30 miles in a weekend with hunting gear was just awkward and not very fun.

          >I'm 33 years old. nice projection though.
Then why do you need to be spoonfed information? There is PLENTY of facts out there. 300WM is a barrel burner, but you'll never reach that point because you can't even carry a rifle around.

I'm not asking to be spoonfed you illiterate literal moron. I'm asking for my peers recommendations based on the research I've already done.
How are you this fucking stupid?

              seethe harder, zoomie.
It was a last minute invite to a trip I didn't plan on making for a hunt I wasn't planning on doing.
Didn't have time to source a new rifle the day before I set out.
              Be more mad please.

Why did you buy a heavy ass rifle on a light recoil caliber?
Did you only plan on benchrest shooting?

                can you not read?
I explain that exact reason in the OP.

Again, why buy a heavy ass rifle to begin with?
Just because it was "OK" since you only did static shooting doesn't mean it was the right choice you fucking mong.

Recoil doesn't mean anything when you don't actually train with the weapon and are relying entirely on technology to get the job done. I could probably kill an elk just as easily with a Glock as you could with any rifle you own.

Use literally anything you want to shoot elk at under 100 yards. Get a Kimber Hunter (Desolv Black or not) in 6.5 Creedmore or 7mm-08 or .308 if you want a proper hunting bolt gun. Under 7 lbs loaded if you get a SWFA 10x fixed power scope for it.

You want a light weight 308. Or 308 long fudd.
You don't need a magnum round for any north American game unless you intend to unethically harvest beyond 600 yards

Hey OP, I'm sorry I gave you so much shit. You're still learning.
Anyway, I stick with the advice I gave earlier: Get a 30-06 ultralight.
    Have fun hunting.
