Why the hell are they telling them to shoot? Shoot them with WHAT Russia has fricking draconian weapon laws, they'll get slaughtered if they start taking potshots with some ancient ass single barrel shotgun or something.

Russians are allowed to own modern rifles. Civilians are able to own AR's and AK's over there.

Allowed in the same way Americans are "allowed" to own fully automatic weapons and rpgs. The amount of loopholes and bribes you need to own a proper rifle in Russia is up there with fricking Britain.

Russia has all sorts of draconian laws. They also have some serious issues with enforcing those laws. And major corruption. And military stockpiles that for decades weren't too closely monitored.

The Russians are pushing back the Russians in Russia. The Russian forces are well equipped and their heavy weapons are killing many Russians. Russians are being ordered to flee and kill the Russians who are, of course, illegally killing Russians. All of Russia will know the fear that comes from facing Russians.

The Russian penetration is flanked by a river and the Russian-Ukrainian border, Russia also has to cross a river if they want to stop the Russians from advancing further into Russia, the bridge on said Russian side of the river has been blown up according to Russian telegrams.

          1. Use helicopter ferries extensively in a guerilla conflict. Said guerilla being veterans of your own army with extensive amounts of vintage gear taken from you, including MANPADS.
          2. Set up fixed HQ installation next to area with guerilla presence.
          3. Have your helicopters use a fixed approach vector when landing at the HQ for an extended time.

calling the US in 1941-45 a command economy is laughably ignorant. Capitalism still existed, the difference from prior and following years is that 45 % of GDP went into defense spending

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't US see USSR's plans for computerized planning and then decided to make their own version, with the idea being that in case of nuclear war US economy would instantly transition to a network of computerized command economy factories worked from under ground?

      Anonymous

The hilarious thing about the USSR, is that it actually largely failed because
      - Lack of cooperation between Soviet firms who were hyper competitive and predatory against eachother, this meant that they pretty much all sabotaged eachother on joint projects. Why the Soviet Moon rocket went to shit, but also why Soviet inventions like Cell Phones and The Internet never got off the ground despite having working versions. Firms would just refuse to work with eachother, meanwhile in ironically, in the West, in particular the US, the MIC worked very well with Public and Private R&D to roll out new infrastructure and technology.
      - Lysenko, this man pretty much fricked all Soviet agricultural science for it's entire existence.
      - Not a meritocracy, but Nomenklatura made advancement in the Soviet system about how hard you can suck your bosses dick, rather than produce actual results. Gorbachev literally rose to the top, because he provided "services to the exceptional relaxation of Party officials" (read sucked dick the best). This also meant that party officials would openly sabotage advances in productivity that would threaten jobs or their jobs. Hence why Linear planning was dumped despite providing a good way to centrally plan production, and things like the Soviet Internet were further hamstrung.
      - Andropov died. If he didn't die, the USSR would likely be much closer to China today. The man in his short few years, literally put the Soviet budget in black and saw growth improve by several percentage points, while engaging in massive anti-corruption campaigns.

China, Singapore, Japan, South Korea show that central planning and a command economy are perfectly viable economic systems. (webm related) The USSR just kept the worst of Tsardom (For example, Nomenklatura) and covered it in a red paint. What made the USSR better than modern Russia, is that it had an actual hopeful ideology and it wasn't brazenly an predatory mafia state.

The USSR wasn't the Eastern Bloc. The USSR was basically a bunch of dirt poor central asian and caucus shitholes and Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltics.
Ukraine, Belarus and Russia were basically subsidizing everyone else, so you had like 90% support for the USSR in the other regions, in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine it was around the 70%

Reminds me of the story where some Soviet computer scientists found out that functioning microchips were being made in the Soviet Union when some were accidentally mailed to the wrong address.
I've done enough corporate crap to see this happen even in mid-sized organizations. Without any means of communication, no-one knows that the department next door is struggling with the same challenges, and the bosses don't know enough to share the information, or they don't know the other team's boss because their own boss never lets them meet. Eventually you have a dozen departments struggling to solve similar issues, each without enough resources to do it well on their own. The Soviet system was basically designed to cause this.

Soviets and India make up a big fat chunk of the case study example he gives for dysfunction in central planning.

These things are always a gradient in how bad it gets but it’s pretty damn rare for a situation to unabashedly improved when all choices are disctqted from the top. that’s not to say that some kind of director from the top is a bad thing since civilization could not function without some kind of guiding hand but man when command and control takes up more then it can chew graft is catastrophic.

Be straight with me bros, how likely is it that the rebels can HOLD onto their occupied territories? Actually getting in there is half the battle. If they can hold onto territory this (probably) would be a huge thorn in the Russian militray's side for the remainder of the war, or until it's retaken.

depends on how russia interprets it
      either:
      >think its a a feint, do not devote extra forces to it, and risk losing the area to ukraine
      >throw a stupid amount of manpower at it and weaken other areas of the front

Option 2 is most likely and they will not last.

      Anonymous

Seems more like this is a diversion operation to force Russia to draw away troops from the south. Russia is now in a catch-22 situation where they either have to divert troops out of Ukraine, which makes them more vulnerable to a counter offensive, or try to handle things with what few troops they have in theater, risking leaving a large chunk of their own territory in "separatist" hands.

Depends on the terrain and the support Ukraine can provide. If they don't go too deep into Russia, then they can be covered by Ukrainian artillery, manpads, SAMs, etc.. If they have a significant manpower, ammunition, ATGMs, mines, and they dig in, Russia will have to send some heavy firepower to dislodge them. Which they can't really spare. If they pull it from other places, Ukraine can attack elsewhere. No good options.

Advancing to resistance, digging in, and then forcing Russia to commit to an offensive action to push them out would provide strategic value elsewhere on the line. If Russia doesn't respond, then there's no reason not to push forward and take a larger salient - if they do then just dig in and enjoy being on the defensive.

Not likely but the psychological damage and opportunity to blow up or capture military related equipment make it a highly effective operation. Plus you know Russia might actually have to use troops to guard the border now.

So do you guys think they're gonna start shelling thier own villages? Because evidently the Russian doctrine so far has been to absolutely level everything with artillery to the point where there's been shell shortages. I bet monke is gonna wanna deal with this little occupation as quickly as possible to save face sooooo...
God help you if you're a random ass citizen in belgorad right about now, with the track record the Russian military has dealing with hostage situations you're just as likely to be killed by your own side

The ROA was a real faction back in WWII that (like the Banderites) was recruited from captured Russians to fight against the Soviets.
RusBlack folk hunted them both down and executed anyone who they could get their hands on, and to this day any mention of these guys drives them borderline insane.

Russia is obviously in the wrong to anyone sane, so anti-Russian/pro-the people defending their land and homes should be the default. /misc/ is full of moronic ideologues obsessed with Putin as the champion of their far right version of the Internationale, so they're forced to contort themselves into bizarre logical stances.

Because, tourist, defending yourself against an armed invader is a god given right. My parents were denied the opportunity to kill Russians despite living through the entire Cold War. I will embrace every opportunity to kill Russians or support those that are actively doing so. If you study the history of Russia in the late 19th and 20th century, you can see just how massively moronic of a country it is, while desperately clinging to "world power" status.
