why do they let women be police

probably because nobody wants to be cops anymore because they have to deal with vid related constantly

Because they pass the requirements set by the department

It's a quota more than requirements. Requirements get lowered to meet the quota. They want at least 40% women on the force in 5 years here lmaoooo

Because the vast majority of policework isn't actually chasing down buck Black folk on foot and wrestling them into a paddywagon. Women can do most of the job, and parts of it they can do better than men. We achieve more when we work together.

If you're curious the research is out there, but the summary is that women are more likely to view policework as primarily about helping people and they're better at doing that. Men are more likely to view policework as primarily about controlling people and they're better at doing that.

You will now say something like "policing isn't about helping people so therefore it doesn't matter than women are better at it!" but I'm not really interested in having that argument.

Law Enforcement is a self-evident concept.

Cops are not there to be your friends, they're there to take you to court so you can be processed based on what you're accused of. There's no part of that definition that includes "helping" people. This isn't to say that cops can't help or be members of the community in a socially acceptable way...

            But that requires numbers.

In any organization, attrition is the enemy of experience and socially intuitive operations. The more cops you lose, the less of that "community policing" vibe you will have, because your constantly having to rotate and shuffle deployments for basic coverage. Anyone of skill will get tossed around from precinct to precinct helping to "fix" problems in operations until they burnout or quit so they can do the actual kind of policing (i.e. community-style) that all cops really want.

Hiring ineffective officers does not improve attrition, it actually increases it. In the case of the male cop, he doesn't feel safe because he's relying on a woman, and the woman is naturally risk averse and in a job where taking risks are what make mediocre officers good or even great. So both will end up quitting when put together.

I don't need a study to tell me this, I've witnessed it. No academic paper would DARE to touch on the subject of female officers being less likely to shoot to defend their partner or the many times female officers have frozen up in dangerous situations, becoming a liability. So, instead they tout it in fuzzy-wuzzy language.

Helping criminals is literally NOT their job.

              >I don't need a study to tell me this
I think it's more like you need studies to not tell you things so that you can continue believing this.

I hope you got what you needed out of your virtue signalling.

My police or sheriffs office has had the same 11 people for like a decade now. Pretty much everyone knows them at this point. They got a K9 a few months ago and there was damn near a parade for it. Sheriff actually told everyone to get a gun and get a dog because he's expecting at least 4 of them to retire this year and he's going to be under staffed. They're looking for people all over the state and it's hard to not only get people to move there, but to want to be a cop.

There's no competency crisis, businesses just aren't willing to pay enough for what they want in a worker. If you want someone willing to kill as part of their job, possibly get a murder charge if they make a bad call, can never do drugs, etc. etc. then you need to pay a premium.
Most HCOL places cops start out at 60-70k and that's very optimistic, there are much easier ways to earn 60k than being a cop.

This. 10 years ago 70k per was solid. Now, not so much. I make 125k per and although its comfortable, I am hardly ballin. My wife still has to work. For my dads generation 100k+ was fricking stupid money and 70k was solid "middle-class wife stays at home" money.

Agreed 70k isn't horrible outside of areas like NYC/Chicago. You're not going to have kids on that wage though and as I said before, there are easier ways to make 70k. If all your job can offer is 70k then pursuing your profession is not financially responsible.

Right, but you both have to work and you both make 70k. You also wfh which reduces expenses. Someone making 70k with a wife working at walmart is still not in a good position.

You work from home which means you don't have to concern yourself with the costs associated with commuting every day + where exactly you live is not a concern. Those of us that work in meatspace have to live fairly close to work or be the sort of psychopath that doesn't mind living in the boonies and commuting 2 hours each way.

Don't forget they keep losing officers due to how shit everything is over there job wise and how no one wants to be a cop there. Seriously they've been going through an exodus for a while now without having any new hires properly fill the gap.

Part of the reason why PDs are struggling to hire/retain officers is because the PDs themselves, police unions, and local governments are all moronic in one way or another.
The PDs and unions will circle the wagons and defend murderous morons as long as they have a badge and chronically abuse their power. This generates a lot of heat and then moronic local govs step in to try to appease the general public. Because they're moronic, these local govs then come up with a bunch of nonsensical new requirements for the PD like "They must have 40% female officers!!!!"
The new requirements don't actually help anyone and just make life harder for regular officers + all the heat generated by the actions of the union/PD gets them a lot of hate IRL, so smart people quit the force or choose to avoid the career in the first place.

You also discourage the kind of people you want becoming cops from becoming cops, if you get a reputation for 'back the blue' type bullshit and defending frickheads. I'd argue that a department recruiting the wrong people is worse than one just not finding enough of the right people, in terms of the longer term damage.

I'd agree if my city wasn't so damn mild. We have on average, 1 maybe 2 homicide cases a year in a city or 300k people.
If I was offered 75k to check in on noise complaints and do traffic stops I'd take it in an instant, but I hate talking to people. The benefits are insane as well, with females getting 6 months paid maternity leave and major operations costing almost nothing out of pocket.

              Not true.

A big part of it is that you can do everything right and by the book and still go to prison if your case becomes "political", even if you are cleared for months after the incident. Yes, the department will throw you under the bus to defend the criminal scumbag you arrested.

People can see politicians will sell you out and your own chief will call you a "monster" after shaking your hand a week ago.

              F*ck that.

And in Seattle, cops get paid over 80k a year and they STILL can't fill the ranks. They're even offering marijuana waivers with no luck.

It's social suicide to be a cop in Seattle, you will be hated by 40% of the population in the city by default, and you will have to deal with the passive aggressive folks that love to entrap or try to trick cops so they can sue the city of petty shit. You know those AuditTheLaw and Sovereign citizen types? There are tons in "folk lawyers" like that in Seattle who will make your life hell. There are cops that get liens put on their property by random butthurt asshats because they get the officer's info.

And let's not forget you can be dragged in front of an OPA board for telling your partner to " take their east coast attitude elsewhere". I shit you not on that last one, the OPA complaints of this city are some of the most petty and arbitrary complaints ever seen. You think they're busting Vic Mackey's but they're literally the language and feelings police, of the police.

We're down to around 450 officers when we should have around 1800 to be functional. It's even worse in the security industry; half the people a company hires are borderline moronic but well meaning and the other half think they're too good to show up to work on time and spend most of their shifts creating drama for no fricking reason. And forget about criticism, they'll have a mental breakdown for at least a week.

The competency crisis is real and it's going to be a disaster.

It takes roughly 10-20 years for a city to recover from a riot or massive civil unrest. You will be paying for it one way or the other if you live in the US. And it doesn't make sense to let it burn, when the problem is not the fire itself.

You don't burn a whole forest down because a few of the raccoons in it have rabies, you hunt/trap the rabid ones and vaccinate the others. The equivalent of this is the classic "broken windows" policing which is really just triage and a part of the recovery of a city. And it takes roughly 50-75 years of this style of policing before an area has eliminated its "hereditary" crime problem, as you have to keep a city on lockdown until all the OGs and miscreants die in prison or get released at 80 years old, where they can't do any more damage.

After that, you can go back to "normality" in terms of community policing. New York, for example, ended their BW policing about 60 years too early, so naturally when they stopped, things deteriorated rapidly.

If we left things up to Nature alone, we'd still be running around swinging from trees and sleeping in caves.

The "competency crisis," is a meme. The article that coined the term points to a few random industrial accidents and mistakes and declared a competency crisis while holding fricking Boomers up as a shining example of real competency.

But airlines crashed more in the 1970s. People died of infectious bacteria getting into food back in the 1960s too and it happened at a higher rate. I've yet to see anything that suggests these things are more common due to some "crisis," just cherry picking.

If there is such a crisis you might tie it back to job postings that require master's degrees for technician jobs that then offer visas and pay $17 an hour. Well no shit, if you're not willing to pay any money and are looking to only hire desperate migrants who will work for peanuts you get shitty workers.

This is not so much the case for cops. I worked for a city for years and we paid our cops quite well, over $100k in take home pay a year on average, and had an absolute shit show of a force. The problem with cops is the absolutely massive power of their unions which makes it impossible to impose discipline. This in turn tanks morale and makes people leave.

Making cops impossible to fire doesn't make being a cop fun for good cops. It means they are surrounded by incompetents and legit alcoholic, wife beating criminals. Is it any wonder they leave when they have to deal with criminal shit heads on calls and work with them? Low discipline leads to low morale and unions make discipline fricking impossible because you have two chains of command and one wants as little work to be done as possible to wrangle out more pay.

Also, $100k public sector with a 75% of max salary pension at age 55 is really more like getting paid $165k private sector. Pay is definitely not the issue in many cities, it's the atrocious working conditions.

            >Get dispatched to call
            >It's Tyrone
            And repeat for 10 hours

In most US cities, 75% of police calls did service are dealing with the same people over and over again, and the only time there's a break is when said people do something violent or serious enough a judge can't articulate ORing them or giving a 1000 cash bail.

We're seeing the very real affects of the idea that anyone can be rehabilitated, they just need more money for dem programs. Whereas irl it would be infinitely more effective in every metric if we just sterilized felons and addicts.
