What? The Bren literally was 20 round LMG that could be fired without a tripod and was very accurate for a LMG. French Resistance loved it over every other gun. DP-27 was also pretty similar to the Bren.

          >unrestricted submarine warfare
          >useful
Are submarines the ultimate cope for incompetent militaries? I mean, they have their use. Don't get me wrong. But it feels like any country that cannot manage a good surface fleet just copes out on a huge submarine fleet, rendering them good at annoying their enemies but bad at anything resembling worthwhile force projection.

            Anonymous

Nah. To be serious for a moment, they're the guerilla warfare of the sea. Unrestricted submarine warfare is a meme in the modern era, but they are still very deadly to actual surface combatants which makes any aggression much more of a problem. They're built by nations that don't care about having force projection and instead just want to be able to secure their own borders, excluding the case of boomers where they're also acting as a nuclear deterrent that is harder to first strike then a silo. Not every nation feels the need to act as the world police, and for the ones that just want no one to frick with them, submarines are a good option.

I just question if Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare would have ever actually gotten the UK to surrender. The idea it would just starve was cope in and of itself.

It worked well for the US against the Japanese, so it wasn't a terrible idea on paper. However, there was no beating the US's production capability with the German shipyard's. We were cranking out liberty ships faster then they could possibly have sank them even if the US and Brits hadn't figured out ASW half way through the whole thing.

                Anonymous

The US submarine warfare was a supplement to the surface fleet campaign. Submarines by themselves don't do jack shit to win wars.

                Anonymous

While they weren't going to win the fight against any warships, though they did claim a whole lot of kills at 30% of the warships lost to the USN during WWII, the USN subs did an exceptional job of blowing the shit out of IJN merchant shipping, claiming over half the tonnage sank during the war in addition to engaging in mine laying in a bunch of places that the surface fleet would never have been able to reach. If you don't understand how this much damage directly lead to the ease with which the US was able to conduct it's island hopping campaign, and the massive effects it had on the economy of the home island, you're just being willfully ignorant.

While some of the most successful subs were in the later years of the war, there's plenty of success stories from 1942 and on.

Only really effective towards the tail end of '43, anon
While I acknowledge that ultimately they wrecked Jap logistics and military industry, the sub effort could have been much more timely, say in '42 where it would have contributed very materially to the Guadalcanal campaign.

I kneel since I couldn't find a chart like that, but while you're right about it spiking in number of ships sunk near the end, even in 1942 US submarine raiding was outstripping Japanese merchantman production, and that still put a whole lot of pressure on the big logistical train the nips were trying to run to the outlying islands, while later years had the nips confined to a much smaller area which meant a much more target rich environment.

                >while later years had the nips confined to a much smaller area which meant a much more target rich environment
TLDR the US sub fleet wised up big time not just to the faulty torpedo detonator problem but also to tactical and operational issues

I haven't audited this video's sources but it seems on the ball, once you get past the detonator problem everyone knows about, he talks a lot about operational issues which are less focused on by casual readers (such as me; I was always more excited by the flashy carrier battles)

                >I just question if Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare would have ever actually gotten the UK to surrender.
german submarine campaign sunk roughly the same amount of tonnage as they did in WW1

                but heres the thing
                >ships are bigger in WW2, so same tonnage= less ships
                >US meant more ships, so same tonnage = less overall effect
                >WW2 lasted 2 more years than WW1, so same tonnage is stretched out over a longer time

there were only 2 real effects from the sub war
forcing the allies to spend a lot more on anti-sub defense than the germans spent on subs
and causing a mild inconvenience to the british public, white bread was banned to maximize import volumes of grain

starving out britian is pretty laughable when you consider that wartime rationing actually made the brits healthier than before the war began, limiting white flour and sugar actually reduced heart disease and cavities

What the frick is the possible use case for this? It doesn't have enough ammunition, so it cannot be used for suppression like a machine gun. It is too cumbersome to be used in urban combat like a submachine gun. And automatic fire just destroys its accuracy, so even the rifled barrel on it is fricking worthless. The Russians are next after we whip the Krauts. We're gonna turn these Germans around and March em right back to Moscow. I heard Patton say so, that man is gonna secure Europe for democracy for all time.

        >What a swell day!
Yes here in texas oblast we are also hating the israelites and the blacks and find many admirable qualities in Russia and its leader President Putin as hating is part of our shared Christian values.

A bunch of israelites hiding in the mountains and deserts of America are building something. It’s supposed to be a game changer. A guy I know who works in chemical supply said they’re buying up all the pitchblend they can get. I bet it’s that Tesla death ray. Or a scam to get more tax dollars. Probably both.

Subs at the Philippines actually did not run into ASW and were in advantageous positions to sink nearly a dozen tojo transports
But scored zero kills due to faulty torps

at one point a submarine hydrophone operator heard a thump from the tordpeo slamming into the target without detonating

Actual concentration camp guard here. Feel free to ask questions.

Yesterday there was a friendly football match between the Germans and the prisoners. It was an attempt to add a little more fun into their lives. I'm sure they were getting board of their routine with the theater, swimming pool, sauna, schools, spa, etc etc.
Camp kommandant had a special meal prepared for all camp prisoners as well.

When this terrible war is over, at least historians can look back at our camp Auschwitz and see there was some real good during the war.

about how many prisoners are in the camps as of now? I hear allied propaganda spewing some ridiculous number all the time.

The point is really that by the end of the war German war production was almost entirely into air defence. Which means scarce resources weren't available for anything else.

Consequently, the bombing campaign is vindicated.
