I wouldn't throw one away if that's what I had. If it was high enough quality, I would take precautions to keep & care for it. But, that's a lot of weight and maintenance in a For Reals SHTF. I'd be looking for better solutions, more efficient use of the weight & bulk limit of my loadout. There's a lot of variables to consider and it could be a moronic idea or the best idea.

Extremely viable, as soon as the ammo of those shitty guns runs out the sword will once more reign supreme!

Cheap knife, little file work and ingenuity to properly mate it to a stick and you've got a good to excellent spear.
Katana requires drawn out forging bullshit process to turn shitty pig iron into: grorious nihon steer forded one mirrion timu!

Swords beat spears. Spears are just cheaper and easier to source.

Gladius would be a thousand times better since you can't train day-in-day-out with a katana.

          lmao
Take a high school athlete. Give him two weeks of spear training. He now beats every HEMA Sword Saint 95 out of 100 times.

Daggers beat swords. Once the daggerman gets past the sword's point it's game over.

      Both would be shit.
The only good meme japanese weapon useful would be a wakizashi used as a machete

It's as useful as any other preparation for STWH (Shit That Won't Happen).

terrible but its curved shape makes it OK for cutting into Kevlar so not 100% useless.

Worse than pretty much any other sword of comparable length.

if you were to carry a sword you'd probably want something big and choppy, like a cutlass or a falchion. maybe a large (~12") bowie knife if you want something a little smaller

big d guard bowie. in SHTF you need things to do multiple tasks if possible also you need a good hacking / slashing / lopping type weapon.

Depends on the age, sharpness, steel and essentially who made the Katana. The only truly trustworthy maker of Katana's in the modern day are individual smiths and cold steel. Cold steel just makes something that looks like it's a Katana and works. I mean, it is a Katana but it's not. The same techniques weren't used. All I know is that cold steel is the best at cost effective modern recreations of historical melee weapons.

I would trust a cold steel katana to do the job over an antique any day.

Here's the deal. Within 21 feet you are dangerous, but in most situations you are outmatched by firearms. You'd need to ambush them, get the drop on them. You would need to surprise them to have any chance coming out without being ventilated and filled with holes.

In a dark warehouse or densely packed urban city at night with narrow roads, in the brush under the concealment of darkness. That's where you'd want to put yourself. Never ever ever engage more than one person and if you do engage one person you catch them by surprise if possible.

And for people who just have melee weapons too, study HEMA. A katana can be used just as well as an arming sword. Really, a Katana is just the Japanese version of an arming sword with a harder focus on cutting.

There's nothing particular about the way katanas are made that make them especially good or special compared to modern practices. Cold steel is able to make a cost effective replica because the process used to make original ones was inefficient and labor intensive compared to modern (or even some contemporary) methods. You buy a 20k dollar sword because you have 20k to blow on an (albeit functional) art piece

Cold Steel katanas are verifiable garbage, routinely $3-500 overpriced
        >There's nothing particular about the way katanas are made that make them especially good or special compared to modern practices.
this is true, they were special compared to the garbage practices of European smiths until the mid 1700s or so but properly made modern monosteel swords are better quality than historical forged swords

You get a few bad hits and your katana turns to crumpled tinfoil. No matter what you do to an axe, worst case scenario you still have a big chunk of metal on the end of a stick to swing at people.

the traditional ones are specifically made to avaiod this, and that is one reason they acquired such a following. the edge is very hard and retains its edge, and the body is extremely tough and durable and will not break except under extreme conditions

sword is a shitty choice for anything other than hand to hand combat. spear, axe, and bow and/or sling are the proper choices
