How viable is it to buy a horse and migrate west? I'm too broke for a car but have easy access to horses.

How viable is it to buy a horse and migrate west? I'm too broke for a car but have easy access to horses. Would our modern infrastructure allow for such a feat?

I don't know but it would be unfathomably based to do such a thing

      >How viable is it to buy a horse and migrate west?
You will need to do your own research on this one.
      >1. Map the route: Is it feasible to travel the whole distance on horseback? You will not have the luxury of changing mode of transportation halfway through: You must ride the horse, or possibly walk it if it's for whatever reason illegal to ride it in some city, the entire distance. Obv. you cannot stuff it in a taxi to get over a bridge or something that does not allow horses.
      >>1. will require substantial research and nobody here is going to put in the literal days of time it will take to compile it. Why? While "fun" in an autistic way,

      >generic "I'm gonna run away to the woods! I'm suuper serial!!!1" thread #3567353452342354353465437

is right. You're going to bail on us and some anon will have lost easily over a dozen hours of work because of it.
      >2. Do you know how to ride a horse? Not a hard skill, but you need to acquire this skill first.
      >3. Do you know how to take care of a horse? Idem, not hard.
      >4. Do you have the endurance for this trek? Riding a horse for this duration is no joke, ignore any moron posts that might claim it is a leisurely activity.
      >5. Do you have the necessary PrepHoledoors equipment and survival skills? You'll likely get halfway to another town multiple times in this journey. Would be a shame that your horse starved to death because you tied it to a tree and then shat yourself inside out and died because you drank bad lake water.

Answer these questions and ta-da you have your answer. It won't be easy and it requires huge amounts of preparation. It also involves some skills you're unlikely to possess.

      It's been done.
Police "impounded" the guys horse in some town because they thought it was too skinny. Because it was a working horse and not some fat pet foraging in a field 18 hours a day.

But OP, if you can't afford a car you're not going to be able to afford feed for a horse for that long of a trip.

You can just change this to "OP can't afford a horse".

you clearly have no idea how to take care of a horse, so for you it isn't viable at all.

There was a fantastic channel on youtube some 10 years ago called "natural horsemanship" or something, but this term today gives like a million results and I'm not sure if it means the same thing anymore. It was this cowboy dude who explained lots of shit about horses and it was incredibly interesting. All I know is that dealing with horses is complicated, there are tons of ins and outs about everything from character to maintenance, to learning how to ride etc. etc.

OP here, I was more curious to see how viable it’d be. I’m not trying to “go out in the forest maaaaan”, I just wanna travel long distance but I can’t afford a car.

You can take your horse back roads from anywhere to anywhere else. It will be slow. And you need to feed yourself and your horse. You'd be better off on foot.

You can also walk as far as, or farther, than a horse. It depends on what kind of condition you're in. OP's fat pasty ass is going to have a hard time waddling 25 miles a day but eventually he will get the hang of it.

If your only reason for traveling on a horse is cost then there are much better ways to do so. Motorcycles are not terribly expensive and are very efficient when it comes to it. Also you will not have to worry about treating it well like a real, live animal.

I don't recommend it. I took my horse from just outside Louisville up to my aunt's ranch near Sheboygan. Tried to take a big loop around Chicago but I got mugged in Sycamore. Crackhead pulled a knife on me while I was on my horse waiting to cross train tracks. Didn't want him going for my horse so gave him my canteen. Bring a gun if you go OP.

Where's the rough start/endpoint. It'd be very ardous, but going through the right parts of country, at right time of year could make for a great experience. You're going to water to know your foliage and have plenty of water along the way. Last thing you want is to be out in the pines with a colic horse. You might want to bring two horse. For the purpose of giving breaks and maintaining strength, as well as hauling some potentially necessary crap. Otherwise you may be too slow, and run the risk of more danger. Also if you've been around horses enough to know they are half suicidal, and need to be babysat like nobodies business, it certainly is a lot more work than trekking or driving. I'd say it's still doable, even in current year. I hope your serious and this isn't some larp about migrating. It'd cost you more than any plane ticket, if the purpose is raw travel. But I'm sure you knew that.

Horses are expensive as frick to maintain. I guess you could steal one, begin your migration and just let the horse get sickly and lame as you go.

Wait a minute, if the man's traveling can't he just have his horse eat the grass out of the ground? I am very ignorant on the logistics of horse-keeping, but I thought that feed was about keeping cattle in a static spot? How did the nomads do it?

        Anonymous

Do you know which plants your horse can eat, which are toxic, which will cause bloat etc?
Do you know how to trim and clean hooves?
        Change a shoe?
        Care for a sick horse?
        Recognize common illnesses?
Have you ever ridden before? Do you know what terrain is safe?
There's a million questions that could be asked here
The nomads did it with generational knowledge handed down from men with decades of experience.

not sure if srs or not, but that's a really bad idea.. horses are kinda useless tbh

mules are better all around, especially endurance-wise. as far as infrastructure, pretty sure it's legal to ride horses in most places in america except freeways n shit

because just over 10 years ago autists started jerking to a children's long form toy commercial with britly colored horses, and, as autists are prone to, some of the spergs in their neverending fight against dopamine desensitization devolved to working the callused withered lumps of scar tissue that used to be their genitals to actual horses.
