How the FUCK could you beat someone with a GIANT sword??

First of all, I think it'd be pretty hard to block. I mean the impact force alone to be able to swing it, if it connects its gonna knock you on your ass. Secondly the fricking RANGE on a giant sword is insane! You can be so far away and STILL get hit by it! Again, I just feel like you're at a huge disadvantage facing some dude with a giant fricking sword in his hands.

It's really as easy as pulling a trigger.

Since its a giant sword it will take him a while to swing it at you so just close in fast and kick him in the balls. Problem solved.

Well, first off define giant sword. Do you mean the realistic versions in recorded history where they were at maximum around 6 feet long and weighed around 20 pounds max?

Or do you mean the absolute frickery of physics of the "giant sword" you see in anime and fantasy? Ima just say there is no way in HELL a human could lift a real sword like in the pic. I won't even bother going into the impossibility of such a weapon as the list would be too long.

As for swords that were used and made, they have specific uses. Even at less than 20 pounds average it takes a LOT of strength to swing them with any sort of speed and accuracy. Along with that, most shields could stop it quite easily or even just jack chains. you would do more damage with the blunt force than the actual blade in that circumstance. Yes they COULD so some serious damage but you could do the same if not more with a good club, especially in a battle.

TL:DR big sword cool but impractical in most combat situations; easily defeated by decent armor or shield and cannot be used in close combat. Club would be more flexible and consistent.

This is obviously just a bait thread to trigger HEMAgay midwits, but it's not a very good one.

Honestly, you're probably right but seeing the sheer amount of stupidity i've seen I assume nothing.

Humans can lift 400 lbs. A real beefy boy could manouver a 150 lb metal sword well.

The issue isn't how much you can lift, the issue is that the center of gravity of you plus the ultra greatsword is somewhere out in front of you, so you'll tip over unless you're wearing heavy-ass armor to make up the difference, which will impose its own penalties.

        Yeah right.
Let's say you have a sword with a 4ft. long, 150lb blade, with the center of mass roughly in the middle of the blade. Let's say the handle is 1 ft. long, with negligible mass, and your hands are on each end of the handle.
Your lifting arm is going to need to lift the equivalent of 450lbs.
Sure, really strong dudes can lift that much, but that's very different from being able to swing it around even a few times, or with any speed.

Depends, is he able to effectively use a sword that size? If so he’s probably superhuman so I’d stay out of his range. In that case just shoot him.

If he’s unable to use the sword effectively melee weapons would work

    Very easily.

let them take one swing, get out of the way, and you have pretty much all the time in the world to shank the c**t while he's recovering to make a second strike.

the plain simple fact is giant swords like OP's pic are ridiculously imbalanced, and slow. Anyone who has spent more than a few months, never mind any serious effort training in using a sword - be it a katana for iado, or a longsword for hema, or a fricking congolese hunga-munga for whatever african martial art, is going to be able to control the tempo of the fight, dominate the range and the endurance of the fight to be able to keep going, and strike them with impunity if they move from a defensive position.

and realistically, the only defensive positions a giant sword like that can do are high guards, where the blade is vertical, so they can use gravity to drop down into a strike, and not be fighting the leverage of an angled position. Even in those positions, the person is not going to be physically capable of holding a sword that oversized for a long period of time - the person using a normal sword can beat them by waiting till they're tired out.

alternatively, Option 1: Shoot the fricking weaboo twat.
Option 2: spears get the sad fricker at a safe distance.

zweihänder at least is much nimbler than first glance would suggest, you're gonna get cut up

I was referring to nonsense like OP's sword-shaped paddle.

I wouldnt consider a Zweihander a "giant" sword - big, yes, but not giant.
so if you mean "how do you defend against a zweihander, claymore, montante or nodachi?" that's a very different question.

would a zweihänder would be decent for doorway defense?

      absolutely atrocious.

if its that tight, and you really have to channel your inner landsknechtaboo, use a katzbalger.

    1. just shoot him
    2. wait for him to commit to any attack and stab him to death when he falls on his ass

You can parry it dumbass. Or sidestep. Or use a throwing knife (useless against normal swordsman as he could just rush you as you throw it, but he can't cause shit's heavy)

Outside where reality lives, your mighty swing with a long heavy sword means you are worn out after ten second, which you might not have because the momentum of the blade will drive you off balance. Yes, we have examples of long heavy swords being used in combat. By volunteers who gambled on surviving long enough to cash in the double pay, which they had to earn by running straight into a phalanx. Let's just say these guys didn't worry much about pension plans.
