How strategically important can this microscopic island be?

How strategically important can this microscopic island be? It's barely a fraction of a square mile but the Russians and Ukrainians are beating the shit out of each other over it.

It's been discussed many times but the jist of it is that it offers an "unsinkable" AA platform that offers control over the surrounding airspace (Moskow flagship used to fufill this role). I wouldn't say it's absolutely vital for the russians but more power projection is better. However, it's quite far away from Crimea, isolated, very small, ukraine got better long range artillery to make life more miserable to the russians soldiers and frankly, they should have left quite a while ago. Their Odessa campaign is doomed and it's too far away from russian positions to be viable defending it

What happens if Russia politically owns it? Then they have territorial access claims to the black sea closer to Romania, and compromising Ukranian access further.

Things would get really fun with NATO if Russia denounced the ICJ decision regarding the maritime boundary and started enforcing Ukraine's old claim.

It's apparently a good place to put SAM batteries. Ukrainians don't actually have any use for it but they want to occupy the island for meme value.

Ukraine is beating Russia on this island. Russia seems to be unable to beat back.

The person who controls it at the end of the war gets an EEZ around it. Which can essentially mean Russia can shut down trade to parts of Ukraine. Same reason China is interested in the Spratley Isles.

Ireland and UK literally argue over Rockall, a little outcrop in the Atlantic that nothing can be put on... but controlling it gives you an area of control in terms of economic control. The Bongs essentially claimed it when a guy went and lived there in a tent, thus cementing it as theirs. They still argue.

      And they're right.
But also, the UK has the military to defend it, Ireland is too cucked other than to make claims in courtrooms.

The sea around it has oil and gas reserves. Would extend Crimeas EEZ more than 20 miles into the western Black Sea making it impossible for NATO to do things like where Britain drove a destroyer very close to Crimea last year

EEZ does not mean territorial waters. You can still sail ships through but you canMt fish or drill for oil without permission.

ukraine doesn't want a russian island in the way of its cargo lanes when this war is over, and they definitely don't want the to be able to claim resource rights because they hold a sliver island

The Russians leaving snake island confirms that they have given up on attempting to take Odessa. I expect the Russian forces in Kherson to be exclusively on the defensive from now on.
