Worse than a normal battleship, armor can't protect you.
And its max bulk density decreases with size, aircraft are even limited by weight than tanks and you aren't seeing tracked battlefortress.

yes while armor is to heavy, what of some lightweight plating? carbon fiber and kevlar maybe.

Last Exile. A diesel-/steampunk adventure, where two young pilots, following in the tracks of their fathers, get an unexpected package to deliver, resulting in a journey across their strange world, rife with imperial politics, knightly battleship combat, and a mysterious and influential guild, which monopolizes the engines holding these ships aloft.

For the weight it would be better off carrying countermeasures than armor. Ciws, lasers, anti missile missiles, phalanx, fast firing 3-5” guns, confetti blasters, flare dispensers.
Even a small armor belt could be traded for a ton of countermeasure
What if you put a more optimized version of the kuznetsov with huge oil sprayers on the front that make giant flame and smoke clouds for the battlebus to fly in. If it’s nuclear powered the smoke won’t choke out the engines but nothing else air breathing could fly near it.

smart, i might use that idea for a battleship i'm making in Scrap Mechanic. don't know how to make CIWS but i'll figure it out

alright just spitballing here, so i'm arming it with 2 Linear Accelerator Cannons, 5 100mm Railgun turrets, 10 30mm chainguns and 6 rapid-fire Gauss cannons. it'll also have space for 6 fighter jets and 8 mechs i call Dragoons.

Ok so you power it by nuclear ramjets. Now what. Well you don’t land, for one thing. So you better have made that shit to last, first and foremost. Airframe wear and tear is gonna be through the roof. Second, you can’t really maneuver for dick. You’re gonna have the aerodynamics of a fat kid trying to jump off the diving board and then slipping. Thirdly, god damn aerial resupply is gonna be a bitch. You’re gonna need a real fast cargo plane, which is an oxymoron, and you’re gonna need it constantly + a specialized hangar to offload and launch these constant (expensive) resupply aircraft due to their low limited capacity for storage and yours, because, even though yea you are nuclear powered you still can’t have too much extra weight. Also, food is gonna taste like dick at that height, so enjoy perpetually low crew morale. Lastly, the fuck are you gonna do about basically being the easiest thing to shoot down in the world. Attach as much countermeasures and extra wings and armor to it as you can you’re getting cruise missiles lobbed at you and dying because everyone will know exactly where you are. Sure most SAMs will be useless or at least ineffective due to armor but what are you going to do when 4 ASMs come screaming in?

    Die. You’re going to die.

      yoink

i just wanna specify that the Albion (name of the warship) is not a battleship, its more of an aerial corvette or destroyer. its only about 210 blocks long and equipped with, as you stated, nuclear ramjets. resupply isn't so bad because due to massive naval bases i call Citadels. a Citadel is a massive tower dotted with docks, hangers and AA weapons. all you have to do is just dock with a Citadel and resupply, before leaving. as for its ability to survive its equipped with 2 massive Radomes and a large sonar suite. plus Gauss CIWS for long range fire. and concerning ASMs,what warship isn't threatened by ASMs? as for maneuverability, aerodynamics don't mean shit when you've got Anti-gravity generators. and they can land, it just takes a big space

        Anonymous

        >,what warship isn't threatened by ASMs

A surface vessel that suffers a hull breach or loses power gets abandoned.

A flying frigate that gets hit by an ASM becomes an instant tomb for the entire 300+ crew as it plummets to the ground.

ah yes, the Ac-130 why should we advance technology when we have 30 year old gunships?

        >the Ac-130 why should we advance technology when we have 30 year old gunships?

Because the 30 year old gunship serves a function. What can your flying deathtrap do that isn't accomplished by a crew of 10 on a cargo plane with a gun port sawed into the side?

If you want to put them in a fictional setting because it's cool go for it, but you have to acknowledge you're in total fantasy territory.

          yoink

while true it would plummet, a warship is always threatened by torpedoes and missiles. so as such i've developed countermeasures, long-range Gauss CIWS, antineutrino laser defenses and a massive EWAR suite. plus shields.

About as possible as you getting laid. But fuck it I think it's cool so let's try and warp reality so such a thing could exist.
Jamming and countermeasure tech gets so good its literally impossible to hit anything with radar, thermal, or radiation guided missiles. The only ones that work are manually guided missiles. As a result dumbfire becomes the name of the game, everyone moves to computerized artillery
Okay so how are we gonna get this retarded puppy airborne? Antimatter balloons. Why? Firstly because fuck you, if you hit me you're gonna annihilate a lot of mass and likely cause an explosion of biblical proportions. Secondly, it'd be way more efficient than using something like jets or traditional balloons to stay in the air. How do we get down? That's the fun part, you don't. You rely on airborne resupply. We'll power it on the energy released from annihilation
What will it be armed with? Well we could use antimatter shells since we've already opened that can of worms, but let's be creative here. They should be armed with an array of point defense lasers to zap down any planes or drones that get too close. For offensive armament they'll obviously be packing railguns with bayonets attached to the ends to allow for more devastating ramming attacks

      yoink

some great ideas, i'm not using any antimatter balloons but i am using antigravity generators, though i could have those as a secondary lift generator. second, armament: the warship is equipped with 5 180mm Railgun turrets, 6 20mm Chainguns and 2 massive Linear Accelerator Cannons. though antimatter weapons are mounted on some of my dry navy warships.

You are now aware that the US had flying aircraft carriers in 1931.
    >The two rigid airships of the Akron class, Akron and Macon, were built for scouting duties for the U.S. Navy and operational between 1931 and 1935.
    >Following experiments with launching and recovering small aeroplanes using USS Los Angeles, the U.S. Navy designed Akron and Macon with internal hangars able to house a number of Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk biplane fighters. The fighters were launched and recovered using a "trapeze" mechanism.[4]
    >With lengths of 785 ft (239 m), Akron and Macon were among the largest flying objects in the world and still hold the world record for helium-filled airships.[citation needed] They were just 20 ft (6.1 m) shorter than the German hydrogen-filled airship Hindenburg.
    >Akron first flew on 8 August 1931 and Macon followed on 21 April 1933. The Sparrowhawk fighters became operational in September 1932. Akron was destroyed on 4 April 1933 and Macon on 12 February 1935.[5][6]
    >During her accident-prone 18-month term of service, the Akron served as an airborne aircraft carrier for launching and recovering F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes. Akron was destroyed[7] in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey on the morning of 4 April 1933, killing 73 of her 76 crewmen and passengers. This accident was the largest loss of life for any airship crash.[8]
    >Macon was designed to carry biplane parasite aircraft, five single-seat Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawks for scouting or two-seat Fleet N2Y-1 for training. In service for less than two years, in 1935 Macon was damaged in a storm and lost off California's Big Sur coast, though most of the crew were saved. The wreckage is listed as "USS Macon Airship Remains" on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The only scenario I see a flying battleship being worth the massive investment and risk of it crashing etc compared to a fleet of bombers and transports is if it can also fly into space and it being capable of atmospheric flight being tangential to it's intended use.

A really big nuclear powered plane with a railgun running down its fuselage to accelerate air breathing missiles up to ramjet or maybe scramjet speed could be viable at some point. Dunno if that really fits the definition of flying battleship but it would be cool and it'd have such long range that it would be hard to attack.

They're technically possible, but not in this universe. Best you can get is a Highfleet kind of deal, but even then they're not really efficient. Sure it's cool to make them and have them be your capital ship, but they're atrocious to fuel, repair, and use in combat, even in THAT universe.
