In the navy, the purpose of the full auto position is for OS rates to disqualify themselves from rifle so they don't have to stand topside rover.

because most of these rifles were built decades ago when the thinking on them was different. too expensive to replace them all so they just tell people to not touch the giggle switch

To flex on people who can’t afford transferable for 20-30k while FN sells M4s for like 850 a rifle.

If you were a soldier in a war and the enemy was 150 m in front of you and to the side of you and rounds were zinging and cracking all around you as you took cover down in some burned out substation when you returned fire at this vague area where you sort of think the enemy may be what setting would you place your rifle on op?

Suppressing fire is pretty much the only reason to use it, maybe if you find yourself in the rare scenario where you have a bead on a mass of enemies as well.

No shit it's useful. This discussion has been beaten to death, revived thanks to israeli Sorcery and then beaten to death again.
Full auto is useful in close combat (Room and Trench clearing, for example) and suppressive fire. While these situations are niche, having full auto versus just semi auto is a major boon to the soldiers on the ground.
If the armies of the world thought that full auto was a bad thing they would have been the first to delete that function from their weapons systems. Fricking moron

What nato countries actually do this?

        all of them
go ahead, find me one that doesn't train and prepare for specifically this using full auto as part of the doctrine
        t. threw a LOT of bolts fun-auto in trenches and rooms during conscription

        >What nato countries actually do this?
In Denmark I was taught to clear rooms like this:
        >1. Hand grenade through entrance
        >2. Full auto on, jump in and spray at anything that moves
We were also instructed to use full auto when shooting at low flying aircraft and helicopters (although its probably better to run and hide).

This is good advice but assumes you actually care about the lives of your own soldiers. Our modern fake and gay zio-police force military doesn't allow this tactic because soldiers are accountable for every round they fire and someone might get killed who wasn't supposed to be killed. They would rather forbid fragging and room brooming at the expense of the lives of their own soldiers.

This will change during a peer-to-peer conflict.

They won't care about that shit then.

All of them, also thats why usually then opt more for small caliber weapons since spray control is just much more effective, 300 blackout and stubby ARs got popular mostly due of armor technology advancements, yet they very rarely are used since most room clearings threads dont even use armor, it would have to be something way more planned, like Iranian Siege 2.0 tier

Rifles are gonna be used in semi auto pretty much always. Only exception is in an ambush, where you have everyone go cyclic rate for a bit to make sure everything in the kill zone is dead

made a mistake learned the hard way once
    >went innawoods to shoot had great time fired my last magazine. My stupid smile quickly turned upside down. I was out of ammo, innawoods the sun was setting and others were still around shooting thier guns and I had 4 miles to drive to get out of the area and onto a long lonely highway.

Ammo is precious! Use it sparingly and for its true purpose.!

on assault rifles not often even in close ranges. its usually a recipe for running out of ammo and not hitting anything.
sometimes it can be useful like unloading though penetrable materials at close range or when doing a close range ambush when you can brace your rifle against something.
