How many calibers do you own and why do you own each one?

I got

>22lr, cheap
>9mm, cheap and effective
>380, fairly effective and allows for smaller/lighter guns than 9mm
>45 ACP, wanted a 1911 cuz they cool
>10mm, wanted a hiking pistol for when in bear country
>5.56, AR’s
>308, hunting large game and shooting past 600 yds

I feel kinda bad for owning so many calibers and now I’m on the verge of getting memed in 5.7

Consolidation is dumb, look at what happened when the Covid panic buying started. All the common calibers disappeared the fastest and the meme calibers were still available. The more calibers you own the more options you have to arm yourself

those who reload know there are really only 6 calibers: small pistol and small rifle, large pistol and large rifle, large pistol and rifle magnum. What about small magnums? Small rifle stands in for small pistol magnum, and small rifle magnum is almost never needed.

Kind of a vapid argument, Mr. Shapiro.
Yeah the price and supply of common ammunition is more volatile, but you can afford to stock up when it's cheap and available (like right now). Niche calibers are more stable, but they're also ALWAYS expensive, maybe you can always get a box of it, but you can only get PrepHole box because it's 3x the price of .223, and when you're spreading that money out across 10-15 different calibers? Its asinine, and you're probably going to have 200 rounds for each gun, at most, and in the end, you would have had more ammunition if you had just bought 5000 rounds of 9mm.

          Anonymous

We're not into collecting guns and shooting holes in paper because its cheap. Also, nobody is probably going out and buying a 1000 round case of 7.37mm derp round to shoot all day from a rifle nobody except Ian has heard of.

Boomers panicked and couldn't find 9mm, 45, 5.56, or any other common caliber including .22lr. The autists who did have the unusual caliber guns shrugged, still ordered online and bought from shelves weird shit like the 5.38remchesterby and went shooting while boomers and borderline npcs cried about ammo shortages.

But yeah, tell me how having just 3 calibers and buying 10,000 round in case the next president causes a panic buy is the play. Oh boy, have fun shooting that 9mm pistol, 9mm rifle, and 9mm revolver.

Yeah, that's great if you want to be able to throw a dart at a calendar, and no matter what day it lands on, you could say "I could buy X meme caliber on that day", but what's the benefit there besides not having to plan ahead? You're getting less ammunition for substantially more money. If you could buy 1000 rounds of 9mm, but only on Monday, would you go with 7.37mm derp because you could buy one 50 round box of it every day of the week?
Like you said, nobody is shooting these meme calibers in great quantities, and you're just as reliant on the "common" calibers as the rest of us, it's just that when some stupid boomer was hurting because he only keeps 150 rounds of 9mm on hand, you could afford an extra trip to the range because you found a dusty musty box of 4.73×33m in the back of your closet and chuckled about how people with common calibers are so stupid.

most I have simply because that's what the guns I wanted came in.

the 10 mm was a special order because 10 mm is awesome and I was already reloading .357, so price and availability was of no concern.

the .223 was a decision against a less common cartridge, because I wanted another gun I would just buy plentiful factory ammo for.

How do those numbers even correlate? It's always been a mystery for me as a woman.

      Anonymous

Well you have imperial and metric measurements and some of the cartridges are named something near the diameter, but not actual diameter.
454 Casull is an obvious example, actual diameter is .451 or .452. It's possible that when Dick Casull was experimenting with 5 shot 45 colts that the bores were oversized and required larger diameter bores, like .454. Not today though.

        Anonymous

        *larger diameter bullets

        Anonymous

So there's no consistency at all, and you just need to remember each particular case?

          Anonymous

You just have to know what it's close to.
There are only so many normal calibers, so you generally just round up or down a few thousandths.
An anon in here mentioned .348, there's really only one cartridge that uses it and there's not a very good selection of jacketed bullets, can still find plenty of cast and moulds though.

          Anonymous

Correct. There's other causes for variation that anon didn't mention either. Different countries have different traditions for naming cartridges, some use bore diameter, some use groove diameter. Some are the result of inaccurate conversions between metric and imperial. Some are the result of historical quirks, for example, back in the day a ".44" pistol really did measure ".44" in the bore. But they used heeled bullets back then, like a .22LR, where the bullet is the same diameter as the brass. They quite quickly figured out this wasn't the best idea so they redesigned the later cartridges...they measure .44 at the case mouth, like they did back in the days of heeled bullets, but the bullet itself is smaller, .429-.432 and they simply kept the same ".44" name even though they didn't measure that anymore. Some cartridges are deliberatley misnamed to make them sound more impressive. I.e. the .480 Ruger is actually a shortened, weaker, version of the .475 Linebaugh but the bigger number ".480" makes it sound more impressive when in reality it is not. The .460 S&W measures .45 just like the .45 Colt and the .454 Casull before it, but it was named .460. The old .577 Boxer aka .577 Manstopper black powder cartridge was made by cutting down .577 rifle brass, so despite the name .577 it actually measures more like .602 because of the taper of the case.
You basically have to look up each and every one as the numbers are rarely true measurements.

          Anonymous

metric cases are mostly named "bore diameter x case length" plus a given name. e.g. 6.5x55 mm Swedish is made for a bore diameter (across the lands) of 6.5 mm (6.7 mm bullet diameter), has a case length of 55 mm and was developed by a Swedish-Norwegian commission.

imperial cartridge names are less consistent, named after bullet diameter, bore diameter, historic bullet diameter (.38), or slightly different from any actual diametera just to set them apart, plus a given name, often the creator.

I bought the 22 mag cylinder for my Heritage Rough Rider
    >44-40 (incomplete)
I bought a gun in 44-40 (big mistake); still need to find lead (to make the bullets) and large pistol primers though.

.45 acp because I was given a 1911 by my father when I turned 21.
    .45lc for plinking
    .454 just because I can
.460 for killing any large game animal in North America
.50 ae because I decided to step up to .50 cal
.500 auto max and .50 bmg will be the next additions to this list for the memes.

    14 overall

.22lr - for combining with suppressor and red dot for ultimate plinking, practicing and teaching new shooter friends
    .32 ACP - it's cute and uncommon
    .380 - concealed carry
    9x18 - I love slavshit
9x19 - concealed carry and bedside gun
7.62x25 - based as frick, my favorite gun and caliber to shoot
    .45 ACP - wanted a big honkin' 1911
.38 Special - wanted a beat to shit old police revolver
.357 Magnum - wanted to hurt my hands with a snubby
12 Gauge - trap shooting is cool
    7.62x39 - I love slavshit
7.62x54r - nugget was broken and cheap and a good project gun to practice gunsmithing
7.5x55 Swiss - straight pull is cool
8mm Mauser - mooser make big bang

I think my next one will be either .308 or 5.56x45, finally.

I may get more calibers but really anything else would be purely cus I like the specific guns that shoot them and would serve no real purpose beyond that. Somewhat regret choosing 7.62x39 over 5.56x45 for that last role but it works

I think a better question is what caliber will you never own or keep. .40SW for me. .45acp is nice, 9mm if you are feeling a bit homosexual. If anything I would meme 10mm before .40

If you're unsure what to use your shotgun for, try sporting clays, very fun 🙂

Even if its a single shot you can still take it around clay grounds

    >.308 Win
Continuing with the trend of "high power in short package", I got a Tavor 7 for HD and handloaded 110gr V-MAX coyotefrickers for the shorter barrel length

Because 9x25 takes awhile to reload and sometimes I want to shoot without half a day of preparation
    >.223

    >.32 ACP

    >.350 Legend
Not yet, but next on my list. Planning on getting into the NFA game and .350L does absolute magic in a super short barrel, and it takes 9x19 bullets which I already use

I never got the point of having a ton of different calibers.
    >7mm Remington Magnum
    >5.56 NATO
    >10mm Auto
Even if I wanted more guns in different cartridges I'd probably just guns chambered in cartridges that fire the same bullet with a different case, eg. 7mm Remmag->7mm-08 Rem->7mm RUM. Only thing I might desire is a big bore rifle like .350 legend or .450 bushmaster or whatever.
