Those "side bays" are engine access panels. B-2 has the same thing. To me it looks like it has one bomb bay that's equivalent to half that of the B-2. Possibly designed to carry a MOP?

      Anonymous

      >single B-2 bay that can carry a MOP.

Yeah, that's been the expected payload and certainly what the center bay looks like.

Engine access is a good one, that's probably what all those are.

      >single B-2 bay that can carry a MOP.

Yeah, that's been the expected payload and certainly what the center bay looks like.

would it have external hardpoints? I know that would defeat the stealth aspect, but I could see them having like an external fuel tank that gets ejected before coming into radar range.

        Anonymous

Nah, in the B-2/21's case since it's got a relaxed flight profile at 50k+ feet it's more like an airliner fuel burn wise and can fly stupidly far on internal fuel- B-2 can do 3,000nm combat range on internal only.

They'd just refuel via tanker before getting into the combat area.

        Anonymous

The B-21 was designed to strike China from bases in the Continental US on internal fuel stows alone.

        Anonymous

Flying wings are supposedly low-drag and very fuel-efficient. They are also strictly subsonic, which means that their engines can be optimized for ~0.85M like an airliner's. And, finally, the US has more tankers than the rest of the world combined. So, external fuel tanks are not really necessary. Bomb bay fuel tanks will probably be developed at some point for rapid re-deployments without sufficient tanker support, however, and I wouldn't be surprised to see an option that involves a smaller internal tank together with a rotary launcher full of JASSM or LRSO.

          Anonymous

optimised sure, but you'll never fit the giant bypass ducts of an airliner into that airframe so it won't reach the same levels of engine efficiency.
737 CFM Leap-X for example here.

            Anonymous

Sure, but that's offset by the much lower drag from the flying wing shape.

      Anonymous

30,000lbs has been the official payload for a long time. It's assumed that the bay is long enough (over 30') to carry a single MOP or MOAB. A better question is what size of rotary launcher(s) will fit in there for carrying JASSM and its variants (including XR), and how many SDBs (either variant) could be carried for a saturation attack. Just going by some casual searching, it appears that each of the three existing heavy bombers uses a rotary launcher system unique to that design, so there's no telling what the zoomies have planned; they could re-use the B-2's rotary launchers, or come up with a new design whole-cloth that's optimized for the weapons currently in use or on the drawing board.

          That's a sensor calibration probe.
Stealth aircraft need to have all their air sensors flush mounted to the airframe, for stealth fuckery reasons.
The problem with flush mounted sensors is that they're heavily prone to interference from the body of the aircraft, so during the testing phase it's crucial to mount a calibration probe that sticks far out from the aircraft and into clean, undisturbed air.
The clean accurate reading from the probe is then used to calibrate/correct the flush sensors, once calibration is completed the probe is then removed.

It's smaller than a B2 which can officially hold around 40,000 lbs (although unofficially higher amounts can be obtained). An educated guess would be the B-21 can hold 50-75% of that amount. That would roughly translate to about 8-12 2,000 lbs bombs or, more likely, 6-10 JASM-ERs.

As a stand-off cruise missile launch platform it makes much more sense than something like Tu-160. If we don't start dropping them from C-5

        Anonymous

Its not replacing the B-52. its replacing B-1s because those are a maintenance nightmare these days and hugely expensive (and not stealthy)- B-2 because its old and expensive to maintain with its outdated coatings and sensors. the B-52 will remain for a few more decades as a cheap cruise missile launcher like how Russia uses the T-95s, and for once air superiority is gained and stealth isn't needed it can just be a massive loitering bomb truck for CAS like they were used in afghanistan. with the new engines its getting especially the buff will be cheap to operate in low threat environs. the USAF is also getting over 100 B-21s to replace 17 B-2s and iirc 48 B-1s.

The B-2 had flaps above the engines that opened during take-off and landing too because the airflow can get interruped during high AoA. those doors are the same and will only be open during takeoff/landing.
