tbf if the Japanese army ever has to fight then things have gone to shit beyond hope of recovery anyway.

      Give it 5-10 years.
The nip government just gave the military a fricknormous budget boost. A ridiculously large increase, something like 5,000%.

I'll take long range precision missiles and a top of the line Air Force and Navy over tacticool high-cut helmets and peltors for my cannon fodder meat bags any day.

Look up the 2022 Defense Spending Policy of Japan, they abandoned BOTH the GSDF and ASDF for the Maritime bois.

They have a pretty modern equipment lineup, with lots of it partly or wholly indigenous, but they tend to get the bottom of the barrel with personnel, since the air and maritime forces are a lot more likely to actual protect Japan.

From what I understand, they have zero mission agility. If something goes wrong in training or in a wargame, they simply continue mindlessly on as though it didn't happen, pretty much like they did in the last war. Which is going to get them killed off very quickly.

Ground forces will likely see no combat, the fighting will almost entirely take place in the sea and air
And buying 500 Tomahawks instead of kitting out your troops is a far wiser choice.

I think the Airborne/Rangers are the ones actually instilled with any concept of flexibility and adaptability.
And those new Marines are influenced by the USMC so maybe they're also more competent

They have a serious fighter jet force for defense against North Korea and China.

Overall, the self defense force is the Japanese military, but they have an official policy of peace and not starting any wars. They did go to Iraq, but they only went to rebuild structures and provide aid for the local people.

      >official policy of peace and not starting any wars

After the nuclear attacks and surrender, the emperor abdicated the throne.

It was Prince Naruhiko Higashikuni who co-operated with the American occupation government.

And eventually, the occupation ended, and Japan was rebuilt, where it is an ally of the USA today.

Their ships are really modern and it looks like they keep them in really good shape. You could eat off the deck, but that's also very Japanese.

The (few) depictions of the modern Japanese navy I've read about in manga seems at least mostly respectable, although they do get into rough circumstances.

Don’t kid yourself, the vast majority of anime and manga that involve the JSDF act like it’s some unbeatable force. Mostly as cope for the fact that Japan’s military is basically under US control

That's the JSDF. Depictions of the navy was something I refered to exclusively with good reason because it's never really depicted.
Like sure, maybe the imperial navy is but that's not the same.

It's pretty funny considering how self-effacing the actual Japanese servicemen are, in my experience.

The meta for island countries is to buy as many anti-air and anti-ship missiles your country can afford plus a frickton of radars and sonars.

Your average grunt can only be kitted at the bare minimum if you sink the invader's ships and landing crafts.

Maybe not as much as WWII Japan, but people should never discount their "Japaneseness". Peoples in a sense never really change, if they were to be deployed against the Chinese, you would definitely see some crazy Banzai energy being revitalized.

This. Rando eastern euro nations would demolish modern japan, there are news articles of polish and other euro soldiers vastly outnumbered and getting in bar brawls with japanese and literally kill the japs where in europe or other parts of the world they just sleep it off, look it up

I believe it. I grew up a huge samurai gay and the more i learned about them the more i realized it was pribably for their own good they never really left their containment island. Granted they were really good with matchlocks back in the day

rando eastern euro nations would also demolish half of western europe up to and including the bundeswehr, who let themselves go so fricking hard. post cold-war military budget drawdowns were a b***h for western militaries, while eastern europe has to remain ever vigilant just in case ivan decides to rear his ugly head again. at least japan has the excuse that it's status as a major land power was brief and slight in comparison to it's navy, which has historically been where most of the budget and fame has gone.

    >Give me AAAAALLLLL the military technology that exists please. No, I don't need a recruitment drive, just give more shit to our existing staff, they can learn a few more disciplines. They can master them even. That's their job, not the populations! The greater population must tend to their own disciplines, use technology in ways that are relevant to them, and they must be protected while they do so.

    I'd say so.

The whole samurai fetishization muh honol superior katana folded 9 billion times bullshit is mainly from the peaceful and technologically stagnant Edo period, not from the Sengoku Jidai civil war, which was the actual heyday of the samurai. Real wartime samurai never acted like you think of them

Pretty good when I was stationed over there. Very... officious. Their culture is kind of autistic. But all the joes I met or worked with were knowledgeable, fit, and motivated to work hard every day. Then drink like alcohol was being banned the following day.

They are very Japanese. It is hard to explain if you have no experience in that country. As professional and proficient as any NATO member, and prolly more than several or most. IDK about "samurai spirit" but I have some confidence that if an officer or NCO told a group of nips to affix bayonets and charge a chink tank or bunker they would do it without a discussion.

"Samurai spirit" is a very constructed concept that meant different things at different points in history. By comparison "chivalry" at least has a clear and consistent definition.

I still wish we kept the IJA around as our vassal in the east for all our Cold War conflicts. Imagine what they'd have done in Vietnam, they'd have left a trail of blood and war crimes all the way to Ho Chi Minh's doorstep. They'd be like our version of the Gurkhas.
Dunno if their way of things would help much for Korea though, I feel like giving MacArthur even partial control over them would somehow make the 38th parallel thing worse. That or they'd go full moron and we'd end up taking Beijing as the war expands onto Chinese soil, either/or.
