On a side note I think the standard now days is to try and keep people’s exposed guts moist and not shove them back in right away so they don’t get kinked or something. I guess we didn’t know any better when I was in.

    This goes back to WWII

The US had an "Ice cream barge" in the pacific fleet that's sole purpose was to pump out ice cream.

    > The craft, a concrete barge acquired from the U.S. Army and worth $1 million, was able to create 10 US gallons (38 l) of ice cream every seven minutes, or approximately 500 US gal (1,900 l) per shift, and could store 2,000 US gal (7,600 l).

The Japs would have bombed it knowing it was an icecream carrier. After all, the only way American soldiers could be bothered to take Jap prisoners - wounded or not - was when they were bribed with icecream. Knowing being captured alive was normally not an option was a great motivator for Jap soldiers to fight to the last man.

          Anonymous

This is why the ice cream barge was necessary in the first place, needed a constant supply of the stuff if you had any hope of herding around the zipper-heads you captured.

did any of it reach the frontline army and marines? reading Leckie and Sledge's books, it seems like the logistics situation wasn't too good in the frontlines.

        Anonymous

        > When World War II hit, countries on either side of the conflict once again banned ice cream, with Britain adding insult to injury by endorsing carrots on sticks as a wartime substitute. But the United States doubled down. Ice cream had become inseparable from the American way of life—and, from that point forward, from military tactics.

        > In 1942, as Japanese torpedoes slowly sank the U.S.S. Lexington, then the second-largest aircraft carrier in the Navy’s arsenal, the crew abandoned ship—but not before breaking into the freezer and eating all the ice cream. Survivors describe scooping ice cream into their helmets and licking them clean before lowering themselves into the Pacific.

        > the U.S. Army constructed miniature ice-cream factories on the front lines and began delivering individual cartons to foxholes. This was in addition to the hundreds of millions of gallons of ice-cream mix they manufactured annually, shipping more than 135 million pounds of dehydrated ice cream in a single year.

hard to find anything specific about the ice cream barge in particular, but if I had to guess it was likely anchored near major buildup points and providing ice cream to sailors and marines at a few larger staging bases, not forward combat posts or when trying to take a contested island.

God damn we really fricking wanted out ice cream back then, not even the largest war in history was gonna stop it.

it was something of an old habit from prohibition, people who didnt want to go blind from a speakeasy tended to visit soda shops to have a pint of ice cream
even though prohibition had been lifted by WW2, alcohol was still nominally banned while on service, so those ice cream eating habits resurfaced

another thing is that sugar was rationed during WW2
sugar displaced real food in farms, so its use had to be strictly observed
the only exceptions made were for chocolate (it gives a quick boost of sugar and caffeine to troops), coca-cola (they were granted a ration exception on the condition they provide soldiers with enough), and ice cream (same reason as cola, soldiers need every little bit of help with morale)

there is a less-clinical side to warfare, which is keeping soldiers more sane with a constant supply of sweets
army food is crap, combat is miserable, and you can di at any moment
but a nice cold scoop of ice cream can make that life easier
its easy to dismiss it as an unnecessary luxury, but time and time again its been proven you have to keep morale up in the army, it matters a lot more than most people would think

          Anonymous

iirc the Marines only got luxury like ice-cream on Banika. Not even Pavuvu had them. It seems the ice cream mostly went to those in the back, far from the from, like Henderson field in the latter stages of Guadalcanal or the landing beaches during late Peleliu and Okinawa campaigns.

I used to work EMS and was only allowed to turn off my ambulance to refuel it or when my shift was over and I was removed from service by dispatch. The rational is that I couldn't guarantee that my ambulance would start again if we got a call. Could be something like that, no guarantee the Sherman would start again.

EMS here, too. One of the other main reasons is you don't want to drain the battery and have the rig not able to start because of how much energy it takes to run the refrigeration unit inside. The only time the engine is off is when the rig is plugged into the charging bay.

this is likely the case. shermans were powered by radial aircraft engines, and while radial engines were very reliable while they were running, they were not reliable to get started, often taking many tries to get them to 'catch'. they are not "turn the key and go" type of engines whatsoever. would be very bad to have to get out of an area quickly and your radial won't start

apparently, in a test between M4 variants, the A3 performed the best as expected followed by the A2
the A1 ended up being the least reliable

the A4 was an odd duck, it was technically the most reliable as it didnt malfunction once
but it suffered the most extreme degradation in performance and was barely moving by the end but still technically worked

The M4's with the Radial were good too, but the problem was there were not enough engines to go around to satisfy both Tank and Airplane demands. Which was why there were so many engine options for the Sherman as everyone who built these tanks had their own idea on how to power them.

The best engine used on the sherman was the Ford GAA V8, and this was in the A3 and was hoarded by the USA. The Multibank (as fricking awesome it is to hear in person) was a nightmare to maintain which was why we just gave almost all of them to the British. The Russians got a good number of the A2 because of the Diesel engine.

also presumably to help streamline logistics
since mixing A1/A2/A3/A4 in a single unit is a recipe for disaster

so old units kept their A1s until the end of the war, even when the A3 was available
the A3 was never lend-leased, so that as much of their army would use it as possible
so they only had to worry about 2 types and it was easier to keep the units using them seperate

while the A2 and A4 were the lend-lease fodder
though the brits got several A1s for north africa

The parent engines were so reliable I was driving USAF Coleman tugs with them into the 1990s so two was probably not horrible. Flathead sixes are as simple as it gets for truck and tank engines.

that is not the case. there is always low, but real chance you won't be able to turn on ANY engine. In military (firefighting and EMS) redundancy in name of the game. You are just a gay.

            Anonymous

            >You are just a gay.
you obviously don't know what you are talking about. radials are exceptionally temperamental to start up. that's what happens when half your cylinders are upside down and you can't seal them properly so they leak oil, fuel and exhaust, and you have an odd-numbered firing order. once they are running they're great, but even the most well-maintained radials hate getting started, and the vast majority of shermans ever made were fitted with radials

Idling a radial engine causes fouling of the spark plugs. It's not a concern with planes since they'll only briefly be at low throttle but on a tank it's murder on the engines. Spark plugs were almost regarded as daily consumables by Sherman crews.

Reminds me of another anecdote where a German soldier rummaged through a dead GI's field ration pack, and to his shock he found things like coffee powder, chocolate bars, and cigarettes, which were all things only provided to officers in the German army at the time.

        Anonymous

Thats kind of because of the blockade, and America only just joined the war while not themselves being blockaded or requiring much dangerous long-haul shipping for their domestic consumer goods, while Germany and Britain had been going at it since 1939, and rationing was strict as both were in a state of total war.

Coffee, chocolate and cigarettes were all commonly distributed to German forces during ww2. I grant you, it gradually became ersatz products but I still question the validity of your 'shocked german soldier' story.

a lot of german memoirs mention different permutations of the same thing: "we knew the war was over when we saw the americans doing something that didnt imply strict rationing"

another one involving shermans was that they saw a bunch of M4 shermans without any markings on them
and when they asked, they were shocked to learn that they simply waiting for someone to ask for them, and it was then it dawned on him how many tanks the US actually had

Not inherent to the issue, but definitely a factor. In the amount of time you save by driving a mile instead of walking, you can go to the gym, come home, shower, and change. Any other walking you avoid is just extra free time you get to enjoy. Now, how many people ACTUALLY go to the gym thanks to the time they save? Probably very few.

yes, but we (burgers) only have to drive int he first place due to badly designed cities (which are hard to fix because Black folk) relative to europe or asia. in a traditional city you can walk to all those places faster than you drive to them here.

American cities aren't badly designed, they're great at what they were actually designed for, which is being spread out so much it's impossible to really kill that many people with a single nuclear strike, and to claim sovereignty over swaths of land that can fit most of Europe many times and is full of nomadic barbarians.

The US is a deconcentrated territory by design. It's meant to dominate as much land as possible with the least people possible. Every technology, law and tradition in the US is a development in how to make living far away from everything somehow practical and comfortable, from the airplane to satellite communications to online shopping.

Nah we are returning to a world of true multipolarity, this is a good thing, china isnt going to rule shit, aside from maybe some parts of africa, but you know what africans are like. This isnt the cold war and that time will never come again, even if we have another world or cold war, and if we do, then America wont be the one profiting off of it, America is in the position now that Britain was after WW1, it might win another world or cold war, but it will not profit from it. Too much debt, too many social problems, too much state bloating, too much corporate interference, too precarious a macroeconomic situation with regards to its industry and its controlled export markets as well as a shaky internal market, growing agitation within imperial populations and various institutional figures doing nothing but stoking the flames or passively allowing them to get worse. America isnt neccessarily doomed, but its time as hegemon is going as the concept becomes retired, in favour of primus inter pares for the NATO camp, at least as long as the EU still isnt a country and as long as the USA doesnt split up again or Britain doesnt reform the dominions.

Americans are less free than anyone in Europe as Americans have no right to resist wrongful arrest, no right to healthy food (American food is labelled unfit for human consumption in the EU, much like chinese crap), have for-profit prisons that legally enslave people, and can be crippled by debt over medical issues. And "cops" wander around with guns, essentially mini warlords, accountable only to their own departments who always rule themselves innocent, and you get to play a game of life or death whenever one stops you or takes issue with you, if he thinks your hands are moving in a funny way. Like that time the "cop" in a hotel blasted a guy he was forcing to crawl on the floor, or the time the NYPD started shooting at random cars when gigachad dorner was on the loose, who they proceed to set on fire.

As shit as America may be now, Western Europe is literally a region of eunuchs who lived fat and happy off of the deaths of millions before them and America right behind them for decades. They so desperately want to believe they’re in some grand utopia a la Star Trek or some shit that they will blatantly ignore everything around them until it is too late. Its also why they reeeee so much about America, because deep down they know that the US was the only thing stopping the Soviets from making the whole continent and beyond red and tarnishing their little mouse experiment. From what I've read there was a similar attitude post-WW1. It's the same mentality that made Chamberlain so desperate to appease Hitler; the idea that we hadn't moved on into some higher understanding of humanity was more horrific to the older generation of Brits than the idea of being conquered.
Thankfully Churchill and the younger generation weren't quite so blind. Hopefully we'll get a repeat of that.

Pure delusion, nobody thinks anywhere in europe is a utopia, but everyone sees America as a dystopian shithole.
America mostly war profited off of both world wars and joined late both times, every country thinks they won the war themselves so no point arguing about it. Chamberlain was weak but nobody actually wanted WW2, Hitler included, and ethnic unity was insisted on at versailles so it was hard to say no. As for post-war, Churchill was preparing to go ahead with operation unthinkable while the US still treated the USSR as allies, sharing classified documents and tech with them until 1948. You wont read more words and cant understand paragraphs.

Both viewpoints are overexaggerated moronation. Plus, no, they fricking don't. The average American doesn't think Europeans believe they live in a Utopia, and no, the average European doesn't think the US is a dystopian shithole. If you actually travel a bit, you'd see that everyday life in both places is pretty much the same for both.

Note, they don't even bother teaching them to cook dry rations despite the fact carrying rice, flour, oil, dehydrated beans/veg, is several times as efficient for weight per calorie and healthier.

US soldiers have to stay tethered to their vehicles because they need water filled "rib shaped pork patties," with the M&M candies all sealed up for them since working a small stove is considered too difficult.

In this hypothetical scenario, it isn’t the lack of burgers that would be the issue. If an adversary had the dominance to completely cut off logistics in that fashion, it means they’ve likely either shut down the ability of americas air assets to function, or are somehow otherwise able to operate despite said Air Force/navy etc. During Afghanistan random outposts in isolated valleys weren’t getting BK and McD’s delivered yet American soldiers and marines were still fighting daily despite constant mortar and rpg attacks.

        Anonymous

Food is essential equipment. Americans have field rations, they have field kitchens. They are plenty of things they can and do eat besides burgers, if you hang around /k/ you are certain to see lively debates over which MREs are trash and which are good. Burger King and the like is just a bonus that helps improve morale away from the front, it doesn't strain logistics so it's seen as NBD.

        Also contrary to what

God tier morbid obesity and diabetes. US goblins would riot if the base didn't have their Macdonalds, Xbox, etc.

Note, they don't even bother teaching them to cook dry rations despite the fact carrying rice, flour, oil, dehydrated beans/veg, is several times as efficient for weight per calorie and healthier.

They've luckily only fought in open areas lately, but Korea showed how fricked a military could get by being bound completely to the road.

is bleating about, they way the US ships rations (everything packaged together) enormously simplifies logistics. All the materials are combined and cooked in fricking Wisconsin or somewhere and then all that needs to be shipped is one container labeled food. Doing it the other way is asking for some poor shmucks to end up with a truck full of beets and nothing else.

        Anonymous

Before operations, there’s more than enough MREs to live off of for at least double the slated time. Again though if logistics are so strained that dudes can’t even pack enough chow for themselves, they’d probably just pull back to where the lines are stable

        Anonymous

Same shit that has happened for centuries. Field rations (MRE) away from base, forward base set up with military cooks/chow. Rinse and repeat. The primary difference and what makes the YS unique is that they can open up fricking minimarts in FOBs so deep in the world that the most countries have trouble even getting their troops to.

So do you think it makes more sense that American troops are “tethered” to vehicles because of food needs, or because they’re mechanized infantry? Anyway yes, prepackaged premade food is very optimal, hence why every country has their own versions of MREs. Everything premade and prepackaged in CONUS. Also it doesn’t require water, only the MRE heater does, and that’s just a luxury thing. I’ve eaten plently without touching the heater, or even taking it out pre op to save on weight

The Military Star card is a credit card basically run by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and only accepted in military stores like the PX and Commissary, although it offers special benefits for personnel such as reduced interest rates while deployed. Only eligible military patrons like service members, their families, certain veterans, and certain DOD civilians can get it.

They're probably KBR or whatnot contractors under a multi-contract agreement, with each company taking a cut down the line until they get peanuts. When I did DOD contracting stateside I got $15/hr, but the government paid $50/hr for my work. It was a racket.

When something is good for morale, it's good to find a way to provide it.
When rum rations stopped in the Royal Navy, they changed to three tins of beer a day, because while that's not enough to get drunk on, those little distractions are an important release valve for stress.

  35. 2 years ago

Because when you run a global Army you invest in things to make your global presence easieer. One of these things is contracts to provide food for soldiers to spend money on. This tradition has tons of history in seafaring nations with onboard ship stores where sailors would spend their pay on luxuries/little things/candy. In the modern age this transitioned from camp followers/local industry accomodating armies to armies accomodating themselves. Whats even more interesting is that the US maintains two seperate military store/food court systems one used/maintained by Army/Airforce contracts and one maintained by the Navy contracts. Supposedly this exists still because Naval Exchanges required better service/goods (or so the rumor goes).

This was the Clinton Bush Obama military and Obama especially was helping on feminizing American armed forces in Burger King is famously loaded with estrogen and is the gayest of all fast food franchises. Burger King on military bases was a military operation and weapon of War but not against the official enemy Force but against the almost exclusively conservative white male American Cadre of troops. Especially those in actual combat on the ground in the dirt. Remember that when the israeli Communists were running the USSR even in the middle of World War II they were happy to kill more Russians than the Germans behind the lines for political reasons. That is where Obama came from.

Burger King and Subway have the AAFES fast food contracts, so yes, they're ubiquitous.

Say, /k/, who works in these fast food chains in enemy country? Military dudes? Friendly locals? Or does the franchise send some poor dudes abroad?
      >Hey, Jose, you're gonna be deployed
      >B...but this is Burger King?!
      >Yeah, and?

Contractors contracted by one company that was subcontracted by another, and then another, and another. All the way down. Government pays $50/hour for the guys work, he makes like $15 if he's lucky after each subcontracting company takes a cut.
