How good is the SAMP/T as an air defence system?

Italy is donating a second SAMP/T battery to Ukraine. How good is this thing?

I know it's probably no Patriot but I guess Ukraine can use any air defence it gets. But in general is it good? Ok? Mediocre? Trash? What's /k/ take on it? Can it help shot down Russian planes carrying glide bombs?

On paper it's roughly similar to patriot pac-3, but I have never heard the Ukrainians talk about the ones they have. There's a few revisions of the missile they fire, early ones aren't as good vs ballistic I think. I suspect they have little ammo for them.

Weird. Maybe because it's a French/Italian system and both France and Italy keep their deliveries generally secret so they may have asked Ukranians not to talk about it much? Or maybe not much ammo to go around for them as already said.

I'm interested to see if someone can find an Ukranian air defense crew opinion on it.

It could also be that sources about SAMP/T are in Italian or French or Ukrainian so finding opinions about it from Ukrainians in English is scarce

Here's some info on it, have no idea if it is credible

Most likely Italy asked them to be silent, sending them has been incredibly controversial in Italy with opposition parties claiming the system was too expansive to be gifted away

Please, PLEASE tell me that the Finnish membership in NATO means they'll be collaborating on the design of a successor system called SAMP/O.

It's not weird. Nobody leaks shit about the serious side of theater-level air defense here. We can chatter about FrankenSAM or how we've got guys strapping R-73s to Osas, or Hawk like someone mentioned, but talking about IRIS/PATRIOT/SAMPT is a slap on the wrist at minimum and jailtime if you reveal anything useful.

They are good and can shoot down ballistic missiles, which is a rare feature.

No, but I've seen western AA actually shoot down pidor missiles with my own eyes, including Patriot shooting down CringeAll missiles

      >the ones they have
I think they only have 1 (one), jointly given by France and Italy.

Let that sink in, the two countries which made the system in the first place have to join forces to give one full set.

I've read that the missile manufacturer (MDBA? can't remember) has trouble increasing production so I guess they ran out of them a long time ago.
It doesn't really matter how good is it if you can't keep it fed.
Training might also be an issue as Italy has 5 (five) of them so not that many trained crews. Don't how many France has but I guess around the same.

The missiles are Asters though, surely production is OK, if only because they need enough missiles to outfit all the VLS cells that need them on Euro warships.

It is hard to compare systems directly, but it is either comparable to PAC-3 or a bit better considering it is a more modern system and the maritime version of SAMP-T has a great track record being used on all the major air defence platforms of France, Italy and the UK.

They're fairly good from what accounts I've read, more a case of having more of them in the field to give extra coverage.

I think its going quite well, the ziggers are dying at an acceptably high rate and its created some 'weapons free' fire zones into Russia, which means even more zigger deaths

Honestly not bad given the size of the country and that Ukraine has like only three partiors, two Iris-T and a couple of hawks.

Supervised how few of these Italy has themselves. You'd think if you went to the trouble to develop an indigenous system you'd buy more than a small handful.

Euro defense budgets, also Italy just isn't that big of a place, neither do they really expect to get hit by air attack. If attacked, fighter aircraft will engage any cruise missiles with the SAMs being withheld for ballistic missiles and anything that gets through the fighters. If you ask me they should buy more but I'm neither Italian nor pay Italian taxes so eh.
