How effective would it be to drop subterranean, self replicating robots around, that kill anything with a heartbeat, but you give good guys, like a watch or something that hid them from the robots?

    I swear I saw a 1980's or 1990's scifi movie with a similar plot.

It's a bad movie but it's super creepy. Saw it for the first time at 4am at my uncle's house.

"Screamers", with Peter Weller from Robocop. Inspired by a scifi short story by Philip k Dick, "Second Variety".

How good is it compared to the short story?

how about i detonate some underground emp to make all the robots dead or turn off everyones watches.

also is the weilders of such a weapon loose track of even one bot, things could get messy.
    >self replicating, means whoever stole/found one now has an army
    >can be deployed above ground for cataclysmic results
    >our government has already misplaced 32 or so nukes

id catch one in a pickle jar, go above ground and demand 1 million dallerinos or id open the jar.
or id just put it on my desk and use a magnet on a stick to play with it.

actually, I don't think they are. One of the points of Dick's novel was that in the end, the "human" screamers were carrying anti-screamer grenades, to kill each other.

You could make a robot that hunts those robots near whatever resource deposits they use to replicate.

Chinese or Russians would make a cheap knockoff copy without any of the IFF or safety protocols and Earth would become uninhabitable.
