different applications. SWAT are only really good for a few use cases. SWAT have to respond rapidly to usually relatively quick situations, but grunts have to endure the stress, boredom, and fear in war. these are just my opinons.

Grunts can legally use airstrikes to clear rooms and shoot on sight
SWAT can legally use tear gas and can shoot on sight if nobody is around with a body cam

    That's about all the difference.

Different approaches to the same problem. SWAT have to pretend to care about bringing in a suspect alive, grunts have no such problem. But SWAT can get some pretty cool toys like cameras and armored bobcats whereas grunts make do with boots, shotguns and Bradley ramps.

So are the armor vests identical for all large cats or does each subgroup get their own, like, can a panther wear bobcat sized hardplates or is it limited to soft armor intercompatability

SWAT are trained for CQB shit for short periods of time, grunts are trained for long term operations and far longer range engagements. Are they 'better' than a grunt? Probably, but unless they served then went into SWAT, they'll have little to no training or experience in long term fighting that grunts do.

At what? At kicking doors and clearing rooms? Almost certainly better than the average regular considering that it's basically all that the SWAT units train for. At doing any of the hundreds of other jobs modern infantry are for? No.

Kek, no they aren't. Cops are lazy, overconfident and used to having the upper hand. All the stereotypes neverserveds assume about soldiers actually apply for a change.

It's also worth making the distinction between "SWAT qualified" teams of bumfrick nowhere that are made up of a handful of their most tryhard patrol officers with a few extra weekends of training and range time compared to actual dedicated SWAT units of major urban centers trained (in theory) to the same standards as FBI HRT.

I believe swat is unnecessary. All active officers on patrol should be the swat team. Carry a rifle in the car and keep a kevlar helmet with you. What's the difference? You can still armor up a patrol car. Swat is just a waste of resources.

The secret service SUV's are basically a SWAT vehicle. If they can pull it off to protect the president then local police can pull that off as well.

The school shooting of Uvalde, TX is a good answer. Technically the 'SWAT' team in that scenario was the border patrol 'BORTAC' team, whom arrived on scene over an hour later. In a military scenario, the school shooter would have been taken out within 15 minutes upon entry by a fireteam.

-- Has a good point here as well. Watch the video of the Nashville shooting, the bodycam shows the officer assembling a fireteam immediately and entering the building quickly to eliminate the suspect. A swat team in this scenario would have delayed the operation and would have increased deaths.

Basically, most police are cowards, or at least they're taught to act like they are. Police training and police policies these days seem to emphasise the safety of the individual officer at the cost of the public. That's why you have officers waiting for an hour while screaming children get gunned down 20 yards away, babies getting their faces burnt to the bone by tear-gas grenades or unarmed civilians shot while playing Simon Says - police are taught to be constantly on-edge, always be ready to shoot first and never accept any risk to themselves. And sure, I'm not saying they should charge into crack houses with their guns holstered and their dicks flapping about but at the end of the day there needs to be some acceptance of the fact that policing is inherently dangerous and if you're too much of a b***h to take that risk then choose another job.

          >Do you think grunts are specially trained and equipped
Grunts are trained and equipped for the full menu of conflict. SOF are high quality grunts with broader training.

SWAT are trained (usually poorly though there are some notable exceptions) for one little segment. Once they reach grunt-level proficiency at one task they stop there instead of learning the rest.

More triggerhappy what with all the flashbanging toddlers and shooting innocent people and busting into the wrong houses. SWAT from where? There is no national standard for training or competency when it comes to SWAT teams. LA or NYC have the funding for dedicated full-time SWAT officers with a shit-ton of training. They also have a lot of people which means a lot of competition for the SWAT slots. At the other end of the spectrum you have PDs where the SWAT team is just an excuse to justify grant money and the officers would be no better than than enthusiastic recreational shooter.

They don't compare, they aren't remotely the same thing. The only similarity between the two of them is that they occasionally shoot guns at people. SWAT doesn't march long distances and dig fortifications, and grunts don't bring in barricaded suspects in friendly urban environments. There's just literally no comparing them

SWAT is a hyper specialized group of cops with no set standard of training between departments so the quality of city to city, let alone state to state is unbelievably vast.
My county is well funded with a larperator sheriff with a hardon for hiring retired green berets, so we're probably one of the better trained teams in the state. That said, SWAT excels at high intensity urban CQB. You don't call SWAT to stage a hasty ambush just like you don't use 11B infantry to extract an HVT out of a neighborhood. SWAT probably has better gun handling skills on account of it being an elective program that has continuous training where you really don't do that in the infantry, but I'd take a squad of riflemen in a stand up fight any day of the week over a SWAT team if the AO isn't specifically tailored to SWAT's wheelhouse

politics mostly. SWAT guys are way more "about it" than the average beat cop. if the chief, mayor, sheriff, etc tells them to stand down, they're not going to go rogue. this happened during the summer of peace as well.

You can't change the entire scoring system and gameplay dynamic for one level. There's absolutely nothing stopping you from ventilating every asiatic on that map with FMJ if you want. Running it with a beanbag shotgun is an extra challenge if you want to get sweaty.

            >one level
Wrong that's just the funniest scenario this supposed realistic game has, there is also fighting 15 proud boys on a sky scraper rigged to explode, and the platoon of Russian mobsters with lvl IV body armor and m249s that your team of 4 is supposed to subdue.
            >scoring system
They can just turn off the lethal kill penalty for the call of duty missions that make up endgame + stetchkov syndicate
            >sweat
Beanbag and Pepperball are also the easy mode options because you can go weapons free in every situation, since you can't kill anyone with them. You don't have to do any police work with those weapons, you can just play the call of duty end game like it's a paintball tourney.

              >They can just turn off the lethal kill penalty
But then you'd have no incentive to try and induce compliance. It'd just be Rainbow Six at that point, and the whole fun of that game is trying to take people alive.
              >Beanbag and Pepperball are also the easy mode options
I don't remember that being the case, kek. I remember most of the bad guys with plates shrugging off the beanbags and forcing me to use other methods like bang spam or gas.

That's absolutely moronic. Former military are sometimes the worst peace officers. Remember that former grunt who did two tours being so trigger happy that he's unloading his glock on a fleeing vehicle in broad daylight in a populated residential neighborhood? Some of those cowboys get back and are just too trigger happy. Not that most cops are much better, but there's no reason marching, long rifle marksmanship, and making your bed right would train you to be a better citizen to your community.

        >there's no reason marching, long rifle marksmanship, and making your bed right would train you to be a better citizen to your community.

that's what is taught in the police academy though. every police department also goes by military ranks as well. why should we waste money training civilians to operate as military members when we have ex military members that are capable of serving the duty of an officer? veterans are more likely to approach a violent subject and eliminate them quicker, like the uvalde shooter. policework has always been a quasi-military organization and you choose to ignore that.

Because the police aren't soldiers. You don't need to perforate someone immediately when showing up to a domestic dispute or someone off their meds having a psychotic episode, or ventilating granny on a wellness check.
Hell, even door-kicking SWAT situations aren't always in need of any rounds discharged. I don't think motor pool Rickie or water dog Dan are a better fit than someone who grew up in their community to police it because they "deployed," to Kuwait.

There is very little standardization between SWAT teams. Some teams are part time and made up of volunteer patrol officers training basically on their own and some are full time teams with access to nice equipment and sizeable training budgets. The average SWAT team likely trains less than the average infantry unit. They also frequently don't know what they don't know because the vast majority of arrestees have no desire to seriously resist a SWAT team whereas most infantry TTPs are built on lessons learned in combat and we've just come out of a 20 year period of continuous war.
