How does a warrior turn his fear into a strength?

How does a warrior turn his fear into a strength?
Often in movies when a character is about to overcome their fear you hear a mentor say something like "Let it flow through you, let it sharpen your senses, yada yada.".
But how did warriors in history and especially modern day soldiers learn to cope with their fear and even use it to make them stronger?

stress innoculation from other sources of danger and or adventure
spirituality with military and stately characteristics
    indoctrination into fanatical devotion
    dehumanization of the enemy

the list can be expanded into infinity but you get the idea of what people have tried successfully in the past. fear is controlled through experience and rationalization (not necessarily correct or logical), we're really fricking good at the latter if we have a bunch of other guys to agree with.

Bravery is a "FRICK IT", Leeeeerooooy Jenkins moment. You either do it or you don't, there is no time to think when you see a grenade by your side.
Life is not like the movies. You will not get a 15-minute flashback in the middle of the battle that will end with you unlocking your anime power-up.

Yes, the army can soften this with intense brainwashing, hence why they like lower IQ or lost individuals to "give them structure". They want you to see enemies as subhuman, as the other. Even with that, people shoot in the air during engagements all the time.

There's a decent amount of literature out there about how modern militaries began incorporating trained psychologists specifically because of how difficult it was to get soldiers to actually shoot at each other, even as recent as the American civil war and the later 1800s the majority of soldiers fired over their enemies' heads both to avoid discipline about not being willing to fight and in hopes of scaring the enemy into running without hurting them. It wasn't uncommon in early modern warfare to recover the rifles from your army after a battle only to find half of them were never even fired.

Everyone is a tough guy on the internet but non-mentally ill people, especially 20 year old kids, generally don't want to actually hurt strangers. It takes a culture of casual violence and/or programming that severely and often irrevocably warps your mind to make it instinctual.

So how did they solve this and make 20 year old kids kill each ther willingly?

according to some tv show i watched one time, normies will kill if they feel their in-group is mortally threatened. thus, strong team reliance, and an understanding drilled into soldiers that if they don't kill him, he'll kill their buddy. and your buddy is watching your back and will kill someone who is trying to kill you. etc.

I think if those strangers were fricking up your village it'd be no issue, the psych is in convincing people to go somewhere far away and frick up strangers they have no connection to

Yeah but even in antiquity soldiers would often have no connection to the place where they fought. Caeser raised legions in Gaul and fought with them in Greece, Egypt, etc.

Be that as it may, those anecdotes were believed and military training doctrine was based on them.

For the majority of human history they didn’t lol. Mass formation armies from Bronze Age to the 18th century would group up and “fight”. It was common for most men to half assedly attack each other. Viking shield war shenanigans are a great example of that, and testudo Romans are another. Random people poking and lunging at you was how they went, not giant walls of men sprinting at each other. And then, eventually, perhaps hours or an entire day of that, one side would rout. There is no manly way to rout, and that’s when the majority of casualties would occur. One side runs away and gets slaughtered. Whether it’s Alexander the Great riding you down or Napoleon that’s how shit went for most of warfare. Or if you’re reallllly unlucky you try and rout but you realize you’re at Cannae and instead you get squished in a mosh pit for hours until some stinky Carthaginian comes and opens your guts for you.

I will save it "to read", thanks

This is what was in the 19-year-old lad's head in the Yugoslav war. All of a sudden, your next-door neighbor was your enemy. The desertion rate was sky-high at the beginning. You have many recent examples, too. My great-grandfather died this way in WWII - they came to his village and told him "go with us, you're fighting". Who is he fighting and what's he fighting for? No idea.

The first comment says something along the lines of "I was so happy to go to serve in Sarajevo in 1989, the city of rock & roll and a cultural melting pot. And then, shit hit the fan" (he would have to attack it in 1991)

You ignore your fear and do what needs to be done, it isn't a strength.
