I wake up half hour before sunlight every day. That's as early as 4am in the summer. Started because I bring bird feeders in at dark because of bears and raccoons and I wanted them back out for the early birds. But anyway even if I didn't have that goal it's been very good for my sleep consistency and overall well being. Like a forced circadian rhythm because I don't have a functioning one otherwise.

Aim to fall asleep at least 6 hours before waking up. With my method I adjust my alarm clock once every 3-4 weeks as sun times gradually change so bedtime varies according to that. So usually I am in bed 7 hours before so I have time to play with my phone and get tired.

And just general things like try not to eat or drink too much within 2 hours of bedtime so your bladder and metabolism don't keep you up. I take my showers shortly after work, not right before bed, because that usually wakes me up too.

    Before retiring:
    >get up 2 hours before I have to be at work.
    >frick around on computer
    >go to work (never late)
    >work
    >come home
    >frick around on computer
    >go to bed at 8pm
    >talk to wife for a few minutes
    >roll over on left side and go to sleep

    after retiring:
    >get up at 5am (no alarm)
    >frick around on computer
    >do whatever I want
    >frick around on computer
    >go to bed at 8pm
    >talk to wife for a few minutes
    >roll over on left side and go to sleep

    It's not your department.

Once you realize this, it's easy. I picture a character like Scruffy the janitor. He's chillin' in a small comfy boiler room, with dials and pipes and he doesn't have any windows or access to the outside world. He looks at his watch, checks some dials, maybe bangs on a pipe or two to make sure (That's the hypnagogic kick) and then he pulls a series of levers and turns you off.

There's no intercom. You can't TELL Scruffy to switch you off. He has to decide to do that on his own, based on his information. One part is his watch, but it's not enough - he probably won't even think about starting the process until his watch says it's time, but then he has to check the dials. Temperature, pressure, orientation. Are we lying down? Are we warm? Is heartbeat low? Light intake (Scruffy doesn't have cameras, he can't see through your eyes, but he can read a dial to tell him illumination is zero)

    THEN he pulls the lever.

    And you go asleep.

And you don't remember because your memory buffer doesn't get saved. So you never know when you go asleep (In fact, nights where you think you didn't sleep a wink, you did sleep, so don't worry).

Basically you have to let go the delusion that you can make yourself sleep. All you can do, all you could ever do, was give Scruffy the cues that will make him decide to pull the lever.

    Trust Scruffy.

    >slam monster
    >eat eggs
    >go to work
    >feel good
    >go to gym
    >go home
    >study
    >get tired
    >go to sleep at reasonable time
    >actually just lay there for 4 hours
    >finally fall asleep
    >wake up wide ass awake 2 hours before alarm
    >go back to sleep after 1 hour of laying there
    >alarm crushes my soul again

dont listen to anons except me. here's what you do.

    1. Dark room
    2. Get comfy in bed
    3. Imagine there is a small log cabin in the sky. You start floating up to it. When you get there, you open the door and inside there is a bed and a small table with a candle on it. It is lit. Imagine yourself getting into the comfy bed and then you blow out the candle. Enjoy your precious sleep anon.

the trick is to stay up so you only sleep for like 5-6 hours max, you will be dead during the day but can roll with it due to the caffeine then you just crash at night then do it all again

for about ten years I had a very busy and stressful job and I had trouble going to sleep and it was killing me. I started going to be early, not to sleep, just to rest, and I listened to an interesting podcast or radio interview (talking only, no music), and I turned the sound down low so I could hear it, but I had to concentrate to hear it. I would fall asleep in minutes because i was not trying to sleep, I was just relaxing and listening to something interesting. Its the same concept as counting sheep. Focus on something else, not trying to sleep, you will relax and go to sleep. Stop drinking coffee or coke to limit stimulants after lunch. I told someone how to do this and they finally tried it and it worked for them too.
