How do you siege underground structures/bunkers?

How would you go about clearing underground areas such as the tunnels used in most middle eastern countries or the soviet underground railways? I can't really think of any way that isn't just gassing the tunnels or receiving mass-casualties trying to storm the place. Could probably cave in the hand-built ones used in Iraq but that's not really an option for the latter as they were built with nukes in mind.

Yes, enter the tunnels, it's safe, I promise. See you soon 🙂

You find all the entries and force the enemy away from them and then secure them by building concrete walls. Then you drill a hole through one of the walls and put a pipe in there. Then you connect the pipe to a bunch of toilets, build a division camp around these toilets and start serving mexican food there.

After securing the exterior you drive a few diesel trucks up to the air vents, pump it in and light it on fire.

seal the entrances, leaving a single feed for air, and then have an army of men eating beans and broccoli and protein shakes and drinking lots of beer round the clock with hoses attached to their asses to funnel all their farts into the air feed you left open

Yeah uuhhhhhh entirely depends on the context, tunnels didn’t help the iraqis once their government fell, they helped the afghans and the vietnamese though

So are we talking about irregular forces doing some kind of terrorist / guerrilla campaign or do we talk about organized logistics and command structures for a nationstate?
Tunnels have entrances and exists that are local chokepoints, if you control those, you control the tunnel. Who cares what happens in them if they cannot project anything outwards.

This thread is very illuminating if you want to make underground fortifications you need enough exits and routes so that you could not be sieged

        has*
They are now being used by ISIS
to be fair ISIS is the successor of the baat government and their security apparatus

Why do you need to take every fortress when you can just go around them?

It depends, if the fortress can attack your rear elements and your logistics you cannot go around it.
A fortress however does not work in a vacuum, same as those tunnels.
Tunnel warfare is very interesting and I really don’t know why no big nation has weaponized tunnel machines yet.
Probably because collapsing tunnels is cheaper than digging them and it’s easier to just attack in the air lel

I remember seeing a post that said that the army would have people pumping in some gas like isobutane so that the enemy would shoot if they didn't have a detector and blow themselves up.
