So you have guns. How would that help you? You are sitting out on the porch enjoying the sun and maybe getting some fishing in. You are completely exposed and in the open against the enemy who could be taking cover in the woods and sniping at you, or approaching through the woods from behind the house.

Why the hell would someone be in the bushes randomly sniping you out in nowhere? If someone tries to rob you they first try to see if its a summer cottage or if there is someone there all year, and if there is they move on to some other cottage without year around residence.

There is no defense against this unless you live in a bunker. You can have a complete perimeter with cameras, fences, etc. and if there are enough determined attackers they can get to you. You'd need a group of active defenders patrolling too which isn't reasonable.

Just find a place with low population, put up a fence on your property line, and have trees to block views into it.

    Layered defenses.
Start small, CIWS. Obviously with radar installation because what the point otherwise
Then go a little bigger, c-ram. Same dealio with radar. Or go Searam and combine both.
Now that your extremely short range defense is dealt with, sabe up for systems to deal with larger threats. Patriot batteries, THAAD, maybe a scattering of NASAMS
Naturally though you need to be prepared for ground threats too, so make sure to maintain a well mined exclusion zone and keep a sneaky cache of two to three thousand ATGMs to fire from the relative safety of your bedroom window

I mean, a lot of your defense is just being middle or nowhere. That's not illegitimate. That said first is physical foundations. You can reinforce ANY house anon to buy yourself a few minutes. Reinforce door frame, real door, heavier duty windshield style glass/poly/glass sandwich windows. You don't need invincibility just enough that someone can't break in in 30 sec. If you've got a few minutes now a gun works.

These days you can also wire the place. Alarms, auto lights, AI camera systems. And that can be expanded cheaply into the woods. And alert you wirelessly wherever. Now again you have that extra minute of warning, and a gun works from there.

All this can also be made (with a bit more cost) to blend very well so the house still looks and feels normal.

Lol "powerlines". Listen anon up here if you're on grid at all you still will deal with regular outages anyway. Snow/ice/windstorms take down trees which take down lines all the fricking time. Or bears claw through the poles or something (just happened a few months ago). Everyone has generators or battery backup or both. And stuff like this is very low power anyway. A UPS will run it for hours and hours.

              t. has lived in a rural forested area and knows his shit.

An ordinary winter snowstorm can knock out power for days, easily. A serious winter snowstorm can keep you shut in for weeks before you can get out, much less the power company can get in to do repairs -- and they'll be busy with everyone else who has also lost power.

Yep, we've got wood stoves for primary heat for a reason. I always have my 3-4 chords stacked in the shed by July so it's nice and dry, but in an emergency I could just go out in the woods and cut dead trees I guess. Now the forest works for you as well as against you.

Though I've got some solar+battery now along with a gen and have been looking at microwind which might add enough in winter to forget about the generator too. Or I might invest in a PTO setup, then there isn't any need to maintain it and test separately because can just use my tractor. But with wood heat you can get by on a pretty small amount of juice for the minimum. Lots of stuff can be kept cold just by putting it outside or in a box that keeps it fridge-temp with a tiny fan to pull in outside air. LED lights use zilch so compared to incandescent age lighting is easy too. Well pump is the really big one, takes a bunch while running but only needs to run once in a while if the system is properly designed so the total energy isn't bad. But it's definitely a big convenience to have normal water vs having to melt snow on the stove and break ice to get water from the pond for toilet flushing (which I did do back in the 90s for a few weeks when I was a ton poorer, but damn is it nice just to have regular pressure). Water heat can be done with wood too (or propane or something else off grid, geothermal heat pump might be good but would then need some real winter generation capability which is harder).

You have to be intelligent about what you deploy where duh, there is no cookie cutter for that. But tools available now are insanely powerful.

Modern motion sensors can be programmed to ignore smaller animals. But you wouldn't be using just sensors but motion cameras that activate when sensing motion.

What if the enemy cut off the powerlines?

Everything can be individually battery (as an alternative source) powered. But it doesn't need to, it's only a problem if you leave home. If you're at home 24/7 you just get alerted and prepare.

OP is probably a city person renter and does indeed have not the slightest clue about securing a home.

Although in fairness I personally think this is a general weakness in the gun community. Not universal but more common then it should be. There is so much focus on guns and getting more guns as the primary axis of defense that I've seen multiple local dudes I love to shoot with who have like 5-6 figures in guns/ammo... and a shitty weakass door with softwood/plywood frame that can be smashed or pried with a bar in like 15 seconds. Zero window impediments of any kind. Some sort of psychological block where "solid objects" are invulnerable because they don't think like criminals or demolishers, subconsciously you never want to hurt your house so you end up developing habits around not doing so and fail to get into the mindset of someone who trashes places for fun. If you're gonna spend 5 figures on weapons you should have spent at least 4 on core physical security, that's the absolute foundation of home defense, but shockingly high numbers of people don't (until it's too late).

You live on a rural piece of property like this, you probably know someone is coming to your house 10 minutes in advance. Rural properties also tend to have more closely knit neighbors, so if you have the thing where some guys are knocking over local properties because law enforcement is de facto not existent, you probably know unless your neighbors don't clue you in. Wait your turn, then kill them from a position of ambush. A spade, a pick, and a few hours and you've improved local crime rates and helped save the environment by turning some dudes completely carbon neutral. And no one is going to come looking for them.

Thermal and motion/vibration sensors scattered around the perimeter

Pop-up turrets set into waterproof pipes at strategic locations around the house and at likely ingress points

Communications and grenade-dropping drones (two separate items) launched from the chimney

Basically, use the sensor net to alert you of humans penetrating (heh) your defensive perimeter, keep the human in the loop to authorize a lethal response. Communications drone can be used to check out potential threats with onboard camera when you're not sure if they're hostiles or your friendly neighbor coming to warn you that the globohomoBlack folk are setting up to raid you. Communications drone should have two-way audio so you can both speak to them listen to what they reply.

Grenade drone is obvious, bomb the shit out of them if they're hostile. Be sure to have antiarmor grenades as an option in case they bring tanks.

It's extremely dependent on the county. Some places are idyllic, some are normal rural, and others are corrupt or meth-riddled hellholes with crime rates resembling a barrio.

says it's just wildly variable. I would say mostly break-ins are non-existent particularly in northern areas (I suspect winter has a moderating effect, it's harder to be homeless desperate shitter when it's 20 below F). If there are break-ins it's usually a cluster local thing: someone's kid goes bad and gets into meth or something and starts breaking into a bunch of places, and everyone figures it out pretty fast, then nothing for another 30 years. Around here almost no one even locks doors. Rural areas of course tend to be more heavily armed, and more unpredictable. You can't really "case" a lot of places in a time efficient manner, like sure you could park somewhere and then sneak through the woods and watch it for a while but that's a lot more work, riskier, harder from an information pov and so on then dense neighborhoods. Odds of someone being around and you getting shot are higher.

But there are risky rural places in desperate straights with enormous drug issues, I don't want to pretend it's all utopia cuz it ain't. Some small cottage in the middle of nowhere though that's never been touched? Yeah I wouldn't keep the family israeliteels there (at least not in an obvious place) but wouldn't worry about it.

I will say that bear break-ins are on the rise though around here. Population is doing very well, but bigger thing is unfortunately a lot of flatlanders coming in from cities will outright feed them thinking it's cool or cute and they can post "wow bear in my yard!!!" on social medias. Then the thing loses its fear of humans and becomes a problem bear and has to be shot eventually which kinda sucks. I dunno, bear hunting naturally is fine to me, but that's man vs wild animal, not one getting suckered in.

    There are two scenarios:

    1. Your past as a CIA assassin/cartel member/mafioso very much wants to catch up with you. Living in a cabin in the woods offers your sniper/kill team the opportunity to kill you in isolation since you are surrounded by concealment with no realistic cover. At best your cameras or other sensors give you an opportunity to drag some of them to hell with you in a gunfight, or give you a chance to fall back to a safe room and call for outside help. Getting a cabin in the woods was a mistake. You should have gotten some kind of hardened structure that laughs at small arms fire and thoughts of forced entry and requires your enemies to step it up to JDAMs, and accept that you can never leave.

    2. You're just some guy that can afford a cabin in the woods. Your primary threat is chance encounters with bears or mountain lions, or meth heads looking for an easy B and E target. Open carry a large caliber pistol and a reload or two on your property, keep your fighting rifle in a quick access safe, and make obvious signs of present habitation. Enjoy your coffee on your front porch as you gaze at nature.

Pic completely unrelated, Mississippi pot roast that turned out really good.

With a house like that in the middle of nowhere, you can secure it cheaply.

The Boomers on AR15.com would suggest something like this:

A.) Place a half gate/concrete barriers on the main road leading to your place so that anyone who goes past it has to slow down to move past it.

B.) Place motion triggered cameras to capture that chokepoint.

As they used to say, KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE.

You now know someone is headed towards your place; and only the most autist of autists would decide to either:

    A.) Heliborne assault you

B.) Take a boat down the river to execute a surprise amphibious assault on you.

C.) Spend an hour walking through the woods after getting off at the main entrance to your hideout to get the drop on you.

So you'll be pretty safe with that one simple trick.

Also, you can spend some money on cheap upgrades for your place:

A.) Harden your door(s) with extra long screws and special strikeplates so they can't easily be kicked in.

B.) Place security film on your windows to prevent them from being easily smashed in. This also helps to protect from falling debris from all the trees around your place.

C.) Some sort of external camera system. Simply being able to look at a monitor and see the people stacking up on your place is a massive situational awareness boost.

(Also, if your cameras are dead...that in itself is a warning sign...)

      >A.) Place a half gate/concrete barriers on the main road leading to your place so that anyone who goes past it has to slow down to move past it.
The enemy would park at least a mile out safely out of earshot and walk slowly under concealment.

      >B.) Place motion triggered cameras to capture that chokepoint.
Easily spotted. Just loop around it.

Also the enemy could easily coordinate a boat landing with land-based attacks from both front and back, triple pincer you down.

If you actually let a group of armed men roll up on your house, you have lost initiative and are probably going to die no matter what.
The answer is to either leave, or position your own dedicated armed friends in advantageous terrain.

shot shell tripwires in different levels and sound effect. It will give you time to get armed and you will know where about they are located also.
Then put on a drysuit and a water proof rifle and go into the river and wait them out.

You don't. You're not going to pull a Alejo Tamez on their ass in something like that. Your best bet would be bar the windows and reinforce the door. That is enough to stop any would be robber. No matter what you do you won't be able to stop someone or someones or something from getting you, an individual person that has to sleep alone in a solitary cabin in the woods.

Develop an interest in rewilding and native ecology to create an incredibly biologically diverse environment around your shack
Plant large quantities of black locust interlaced with poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac around the perimeters of your property, maybe introduce shade tolerant sawbriers as well.
There are a large number of native thistles that can be planted outside of heavily shaded areas, bramble bushes in the genus Rubus will sprawl along the edges of the forest as well as providing food for your many new guests.
Make artificial habitat for wasp and hornet species.
Dig swales, ponds, and ephemeral pools in order to bolster local mosquito, horsefly, reptile, and amphibian populations. A side effect of this will be very drought resistant soils, which will create dense patches of vegetation along them.
Never mow or prune anything under any circumstances.
Eventually you will not want to go outside because your lawn is now a jungle, and stepping outside means you have to deal with the inhospitable conditions that prevent anyone from wanting to go near you anyways.

Bad question. COUNTY would be more relevant than Country. America is fricking huge, crime being high in one area can mean absolutely nothing 1000 miles away.

Well, I basically have that, so, what o did:
-1/4 mile driveway with other neighbors in between me and the road, we watch out for each other and call. Learn to not be a speech and make nice with your neighbors, it's important.
    - I bought a working line German Shepard, and took him to protection classes for a year and a half. You can pay for a turn key watch dog/personal protection dog if you got the money. Mine chills out in his kennel or fenced in area overlooking the approach, and he alerts to literally every single thing that comes up the driveway. 99% of the time, robbers will see/hear that and nope the frick out to find an easier house.
    - hard wired POE security cameras on a DVR, and a secondary networking function so I can get alerts to my phone.
-motion lights everywhere. Could do IR flood lights too so the cameras can see farther with their night vision.
    - security film on big windows and sliding glass doors. I want external sliding barn doors over the sliding glass in the future, and shutters over the windows.
    - my home layout is such that breaking into the house isn't super difficult, even with the above, but the sleeping quarters for all are down a hallway inside, and I've installed a heavy duty reenforced door there and down the basement stairs. If you break in, I'll know, you'll now have my puppers to deal with , and still have to get into my hallway, behind which I will be standing with my AR that I grabbed off the wall safe 20 seconds prior.

In the future I'd like to also turn my closet into an armored panic room with firing ports and my scuba gear.

      >Learn to not be a speech and make nice with your neighbors, it's important.
Yes this is a very good point. In rural areas neighbor relations matter. Everyone knows people, small networks matter. Know your neighbors and don't be an butthole. PARTICULARLY if it's a vacation home be careful about this.
      >- hard wired POE security cameras on a DVR, and a secondary networking function so I can get alerts to my phone.
Same, this is the way to do it if possible, though wireless stuff is getting better and can potentially be more easily concealed in certain cases. But I'd definitely suggest hardwiring the core, and having basic processing/storage at least be local not cloud shit.
      >- security film on big windows and sliding glass doors
Yep, basic security. Another often overlooked option is bushes: you can plant stuff under a window that looks decent but will make it incredibly hard to easily get in that way and impossible to do so quietly.
      >and I've installed a heavy duty reenforced door there and down the basement stairs.
Layers is another good idea. Don't bet it all on a single perimeter, have some level of defense in depth.

I made some blackberry/maple liquor this year rather then just jam, came out awesome. If there are anons new to rural or even who live rural but haven't fully scouted there property for anything good that might be growing (or plating some stuff themselves) I highly recommend doing so.

Yeah, we have way too much jam already.
I recommend getting a juicer, you can juice a lot of stuff and use the pulp for fruit leather. While you use the juice like normal. (fruit leather mixed nuts and homemade jerky is a 10/10 snack)

Also get a small home still for the rest. Or check your local commercial one, sometimes they have an offer where they burn a batch of your own stuff.

Clear out the brush and concealment on the opposite side of the river, build a wall at the exact distance you are most accurate with your rifle. Make sure you build part of the wall into the river. I'd make sure the wall is at least a foot and a half thick, with support beams on both sides weighed down with dug in concrete hard points. Of course the posts should also be weighed down by concrete hard points or at least concrete mix. On the interior side of the wall, do some brick laying with solid standard red bricks. Orient them around the support beams on the interior. Do secondary support with the bricks with half pyramids around the wooden support beams situated to prop up the wall on the interior. If you do this on the other side as well, they will have to use lots of tools and heavy machinery to destroy the exterior support beams and pyramids and then use something to tug down the wall towards them. Make sure the interior brick wall is at least 3 layers of bricks thick make sure to connect them with mortar and properly set them. Use sand bags on the interior to provide extra penetration protection. I'd go with sand bags stacked 8 feet high on the interior, 3 layers. Make sure to line the home with sand bags as well. Build brick hard points on the inside to impede any vehicles that make it through. Cook up some home made "gas" 😉 to throw over the wall when they try to demo. Build a razorwire fence against the river. 8 foot Sandbag birm to protect the exposed side of the house, 6 layers. A shorter brick wall hard point built on the interior of the sand bags. Build a second story of the house and punch kill holes and sniper blinds up there.

      Cont.

You want grenade meshes and concealed kill holes in the house to shoot out of. Learn to build a sniper blind. Consider building a watch tower but understand you can be counter sniped easily from many directions.

There are other things you can rig on the outside of your property involving home Depot and farm supplies, but I'm not going to get into that.

A technical for quick escape if you must abandoon. You can up armor it if you can find a good supply of AR 550 gauge steel.

Digging out a deep basement cellar isn't a bad idea and reinforcing it in case artillery or bombardment occurs. There are other ways to make sure that that's not in their favor either. Escape tunnels aren't a terrible idea but you are next to a river so be careful.
