If you're in Grizzly territory than don't walk alone and keep you food away from your campsite.
Besides that there is nothing you need to worry about, besides critters stealing your food.

        What's larp about bringing friends?
The sound of you talking will keep most wildlife farther away than if you were just silent and alone
Especially when you're just sitting down and doing nothing

you're saying that no animals will tear into the tent to get at you? neither big cats nor a group of jackals?

        Anonymous

I don't think that's very likely, humans are not that common a sight for a wild animal so it will be scared and won't try to hunt you down when there's animals around it's been hunting for years with success, unless it's really, really hungry.
Also you ideally have a campfire, which also scares animals.

you should read up on african travelers and explorers before it got commercialised. sleeping in light tent camps waking up to lions and all kinds of predators curiously checking out wtf this is?

obviously these are pretty used to it today but still...
meanwhile the real dangers where hippos and rhinos, the slow looking dull grass eaters. its a bit the same all over the world.

i usually just bring my dogs offleash. they create enough of a ruckus that any cougar or bear within a few miles is going to steer clear of us.

occasionally you might run into some angry little manlet who will kick and scream in his weird leprauchaun gibberish gaelic tongue about how dogs need to be on leash, but they can be safely ignored.

also try to build cairns every few hundred feet, they signify to any wild animal that it's now your territory, and they can frick right off.

    also
billhook > hatchet > boys axe > gaychete >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> folding saw (but everyone already knows this)

i do forestry service and trail service in washington. meaning i not only clear the trails you hike on but also do all the finish work on them. you see a bridge in the woods? i build those. rock walls stopping the switchbacks from eroding? i pried those boulders out up to a mile away with a rock bar and carried them with a team and nets to the site. trail you hiked on wasn't swamped with mud? someone like me went through and dug all the buried trees, dead animals, etc out of the ground and hauled them out.
as we established in the last thread, i've been doing this for more years than you've been alive.
we were talking about backpacking in the last thread. if you're taking the time to split wood and start a camp fire at night............ you're not really doing that serious of backpacking. that's hours out of your day you could be traveling. if you don't understand how laughable that is........... well you're like 15 years old anon that's why.

i'm making fun of hatchet anon
                >bad opinions
there's a reason fire service anon, axe youtuber anon, and forest service anon (me) all say the same thing... there's a reason if you go ask people irl who do anything involving processing wood in the backcountry they'll probably give you roughly the same answers every time.
if you use these tools its pretty obvious when you want to have a saw, axe, hatchet over one or another. there's overlap in what they can be used for, but not really.
as for fighting off cougars with a tiny juggalo soulja size hatchet, there's a reason why all good self defence gyms and mma gyms stick to evidence based techniques / sparring / practicing against a resisting opponent. fighting cougars with a fiskars x5 is the PrepHole equivalent of a mdojo one touch death punch.

And as for tools, in 20 plus years of forestry and rfs (rural fire service) the only saw I've ever used is a chainsaw and we use dozers to put in fire trails here but you keep on larping it up maybe the 15yr olds will believe you

                >the only saw I've ever used is a chainsaw
yeah no shit forestry is almost always with chainsaws.
i also did it in remote areas with hand tools. in a thread about hand tools that's more relevant than posting about chainsaws. especially with posts about backpacking, since there's a lot of overlap other than not needing tools to grade land or move rocks etc obviously.

just say you want to play around with an axe in the woods. its okay to. there's nothing wrong with admitting its probably larp unless you're doing bushcraft stuff on private property and you like to have a little fun in the woods. look at the other thread i even said you homosexuals made me want to bring an axe in the winter sometimes just because my shit's heavy that time of year anyways and it'd be kind of fun.

Your job is to maintain larp trails so larpers can larp in them
Backpacking is Larping across a distance with larp paraphernalia in a larpsack

I'm a cubicle worker who lives a short drive from a grocery store. I technically only need to be home or buying food ever
Any other location I'm at must be fricking "larp"
I'm gonna hike with a pack into the woods, and I'm gonna chop wood, and I'm gonna like it, and I'm gonna continue to not call it larp

you only think its moronic because you haven't fully embraced it yet. you're so close to it, you already have it figured all out. outside of maybe scientific expeditions or guiding scientific expeditions or body recoveries or uncontacted hunter gatherer tribes its all a big larp. everything's been explored unless you're a caver or something. even free soloers are larpers. embrace it. be the best larper you can.

homie I like the word larp. I'm not gonna dilute it by saying everything that's not essential to life is larp
                I can't agree with this.

20 years and you think everything is accessible by 4x4?
you can easily do forestry for 20 years and never go somewhere remote but not having a concept that forestry is done with hand tools in remote areas is not indicative you've ever done forestry in your life.
doubt you're even 20 years old though honestly. got any proof from 10-20 years ago? i posted some already. where's yours?

What sort of forestry do you work in?? Ours are all blocks surrounded by access roads you park on road and work your way in. Like I said carry chainsaw ect but don't pack anything in to me that means backpack and hike in. And what did you post earlier?

i used to do summers through the us forest service, and during the year i do basically the same thing but with volunteer groups. i posted a sticker given out 10 years ago at an event for one of the volunteer groups.
with the forest service its mostly as you describe, access or logging roads where gas chainsaws are possible while volunteer groups tend to get sent to the less accessible areas.
also the forest service tends to just clear cut the trails and cares mostly about how many miles of trail is made every day, with little concern for the quality. all the finish work, like as i described digging out organics, is done by volunteers later on around here.
lot of rugged terrain around here where there's no way you're getting a 4x4 or chainsaw and the bigger problem, gas to run it. plenty of times i've had to haul hand tools a day or two out. there's pretty remote maintained trails here.
