The sun may rise in the east at least its settled in a final location (west). Wake up, see the sun rising, that’s the east. About to go to bed, see the sun dip below the horizon, that’s the west.
Easiest and most precise is sun and analogue watch at day or polar star/southern cross at night. There are multiple methods which are less accurate but often times sufficiently accurate.
As long as you have a minimum amount of sunlight and are not inside a structure, a stick will do for daytime, but it might take a while.
Sun or stars are the most reliable if there are no landmarks to go by.
If there are trees around you may be able to look for moss. In the Northern hemisphere moss tends to prefer the north side of trees and other objects, since the north side receives the least direct sunlight, keeping it more damp.

Huh, never knew that was the reason, i always assumed it was magnetism or something

rever flow south mos grow north. you never can loss fren 🙂
It's not always the case because local objects can cast shadows but it tends to be on the north side if conditions are right. It's not surefire but it can be useful if you can see the trend on multiple trees.
Even buildings tend to get mold and mildew on the North side more than the others.
Typical the sun and stars. Changing hemispheres can kinda frick that shit up for you, I usually try and find north and keep that on the back of my mind till I adjust to w/e. Aside from hemisphere stuff you do kinda got to go out each night and look at the stars regularly to really get a good idea of what you're doing depending where you are with light "pollution" and hemisphere you might only see a couple of constellations and know which way is which automatically from glancing at it
Barring the sun: maps. Use geographical features to orient yourself. If you don't have a map, congratulations. You've fricked yourself into an un-unfrickable situation through gross negligence or profound mental moronation.
Easy. Start with the direction you're facing. That is This way. Directly behind you will be That way. Last two directions are left and right. Never failed me once.
You remind me of someone I know, and you're half way between knowing all four directions, if east is that way, west is the other. So you got 50% of this down by knowing 25% of it. That means you 100% know 2 of the 4 ways to go in cardinal directions.
The position of the sun
>The position of the sun
But it keeps moving!
If it's overhead just wait an hour or two, if it's dark wait til morning.
yes, that's why using the sun works

You dont keep a mental compass on which way is north?

Paper maps and landmarks
Smoke DMT and ask the spirits for directions.
ask the owls for direction

Position of sun, at given time. Lots of natural things. Trees, anthills, how moss and lichen grows innawoods around rocks and trees.
Lichen on rocks and trees tend to be on south side because it is warmer and drier in the sun.
all revers in the northern hemespher flow south so i just look for water and follow until i escape my perdiciment

Anon, I hope you never get lost.
As long as you know which hemisphere you are in, and you're wearing an analogue watch (set to the correct time), it's easy.
Trees tend to have slightly more branches and leafs on their southern side, since the sun shines from the south.
Stars and position of the sun homie
The 2 stars that comprise the "outer edge" of the cup of the big dipper "point" to Polaris, which is the first star in the handle of the little dipper

I only remember that the sun rises in the East because Japan is Sunrise Land.

Well I never eat soggy wheats so 25% should be good enough.
After a while of being mostly outside you just kind of know it. I know it sounds strange but it is how it is.
i just know
If Im near a major river it usually runs north to south where I am.
Stars, sun, looking at terrain features and figuring out where you are on a map.
You do have topographic maps of your local area right?
