Wtf range has a no singles policy

Mine does, only for rentals if you don't bring your own gun. It exists to prevent from a dude coming in renting and gun and offing himself. Which has happened before.

Most public rental ranges have an insurance mandated policy of no-single shooters unless you bring your own gun. It's to try and cut down on suicides. The assumption is if you going to have a nice day you wouldn't bring your friend along and if you bring your own gun you would have already shot yourself at home.

Also it means there's someone (friend or family) there to try to talk you down if so, or hey they can be in charge of dealing with the body or at least speeding up contacting of people.

Though the real problem here is that the law won't let a range use the body of anyone who commits suicide for some target practice and to settle caliber wars first. Get some value out of it, so that rather then a bummer when someone kills themselves at the range it's an exciting opportunity! Can finally test out 9mm vs 45acp arguments and not with gel! Family can have the body afterwards and it's not like some extra holes matter when it already has a big one anyway.

Why not just buy a gun and do it at home? You gonna take the extra cash with you? I never understood why people do that.

Because the ATF makes you sign saying that you won't use it to kill anyone.

Doesn't seem to do much. Probably a show for insurance companies. Seen a lot of videos where the dude still shoots himself despite having come with other people. It takes, like, a second to put the gun to your head and pull the trigger.

I've been to a few ranges (notably when I lived in Texas, idk why but Texas has abysmal gun ranges) that even though their written policy was no singles on rentals, I was told to leave or "next time have a friend" when I brought my own firearms. Which was unfortunate since at the time I had moved there for college and had no immediate friends or family. After that I think I went to the range maybe once every 6 months or so until graduation.

You're right about the well known public ranges being terrible. I've been to a few different ranges in DFW and Austin. I think the key is to know a landowner that's okay with you shooting on their land in the middle of nowhere. That's where you can do magdumps at night

TAMU, UT was preferred but cost for housing was the deal breaker. I at least had the ability to rent out a $500/mo decent studio for 3 years. Now I'm up in ID so shooting spots galore.

If you are just renting without buying a gun, they have a no singles policy since they assume that those looking to try a gun without having one may just be finding the absolute cheapest way to kill themselves (which has happened). By forcing this policy, the very few people that would want to kill themselves would first need to convince someone to come with them, and if they are and they manage to off themselves, then the person they came with assumes alot of the responsibility

Find BLM owned land and go there instead. Otherwise you’re just kinda fricked unless you find friends with guns, which is hard when you can’t go to a range by yourself.

NFS land also sometimes let you shoot in specific areas, normally with some common-sense safety stuff like use a earthen backdrop and don't shoot across roads.

Report him to management. My local range had a range twink that was a catty little b***h, especially to older guys. When they reported him, the punishment was usually a no-holds-barred "private session". I think the twink might have been getting reported on purpose tbh.

Single men are sketchy. If you're doing stuff like going to the range without a friend or wife, obviously there's something wrong with you. Regular people have a social circle and prefer to share experiences. If you show up to the range as a single male, you're either training for a school shooting, or planning on picrel.

I don't think it's even as complicated as what the other dude said, most suicides (and suicide attempts, hence how this data gets collected) are decided within a couple seconds, even if the thoughts had been going on for a lot longer. Dude may have planned it as an easy means to a firearm, or he might've just thought "frick it" and done it there and then.

Can't really ask him now so we won't know for certain, but rarely do suicidal people really think about the potential bystanders nearby,

          Anonymous

I guess I'll never really understand. A decade ago when I was suicidal, I had literally drawn up an elaborate plan to "disappear" into a specific woodland, and taken great pains scouting out an area for my corpse to remain undiscovered. I also didn't tell a soul, that was kinda the point.
The thought of how my family and friends would react was literally the only thing that kept me from fully undertaking it.
The idea of forcing any of them, or even strangers to witness or unwittingly partake thoroughly disgusted me.

Carl Sagan pointed out that the suicide numbers are higher in Seattle than in Vancouver. They are two comparable cities vis-a-vis climate and demographics. But Seattle has laxer gun laws, so the threshold is lower.

There's also the case of the popular suicide bridge in Czechia(?) where they planted trees on the ground. The suicide numbers dropped (lel). Probably that people was more scared about pain, not death.

We used to have a really grody rental range around here. A guy blew his brains out one day so they put the no-singles policy into effect for rentals. Then a couple of junkies with a suicide pact fricking killed each other at the same time. After that they required anyone renting to already have a CCW permit. They folded pretty soon after that, since around here if you have a CCW you probably belong to a club that isn't a shithole.

I hated the place but I do miss losing the only rental range within an easy drive. First time I ever fired a gun was in there, and even then I knew it was sketchy.

    >Guns are dripping with oil, like leaving a trail out of the office
    >Neither gun works correctly, light strikes or failure to go into battery
    >While I'm struggling with this two young guys with girlfriends move into the lane next to me
    >They're hitting the ceiling, hitting the floor, not hitting the man-sized target 10' away
    >Ask them if they need some help
    >They say no and keep laughing and joking like they're at a bar
    >Counter guy still looking at his laptop
    >I leave before I end up with more holes than I was born with

I went back once with my own guns and a different counter dude asked me if I'd been there before. I said yes, and he said "OK, so you've signed the waivers and insurance forms." I told him I never signed anything and the guy went "Fricking Jack, he must have opened that day."
