Isn't that the point of open carrying 6 flintlock pistols? If the merchant mariners surrender at the sight of you it makes pillaging so much easier.

Join a historical reenactment group. You can get away with pretty much any insane behavior if you convince people it's educational.

        >t. Pirate scholar
Do you know why they did this instead of using a breach loader or repeater? I understand both of these things were expensive luxury items at the time, but pirates were plundering absurd amounts of goods. Surely if you're rich and your life might depend on your sidearm, you'd pay a gunsmith to make you the best.

          Anonymous

As far as I know, breach loaders/repeaters were extensively rare in the 18th century. I would also argue ease of use, maintenance and probably most importantly logistics of powder (which was a tremendous pain back then).
Besides, most of the pirates rarely fought with their marks. Majority of plundering was a peaceful enterprise, often on a rather gentlemanly basis - like Roberts giving often pretty valuable gifts to any crew who surrendered their cargo without any struggle. Teach pretty much build his career on psyops of being this terrible, devil-like figure, while in reality he probably never killed anyone up until his final battle.
Exceptions existed, but they were rare and often dealt with by their own crews.

Fun fact: their flags were often pretty intricate. Picrel, one of the last remaining pirate flags.

            Anonymous

I wonder why they put so much detail on the flag when it would only be seen from a distance.

              Anonymous

It was a thing of pride for each crew. It's like with today's military banners or Roman Aquila, etc. It was their biggest business tool as well.
The same applied from the other side. Just a mere possession of the black flag often meant getting ROPED.

It was often better to come equipped with multiple pistols if one could afford it than anything else
Even knights traded in their lances for a pair of pistols

I hate Hollywood myths but this one's pretty legit. Pirate were rewarded with guns. Most of them got sold. Lots got used to take more guns. You can't reload very fast, why not just carry multiple? Tldr you're a fricking dumbshit

      Anonymous

Edward Teach aka Blackbeard did. Why do you think they wouldn’t if they could?
      >guns very effective
      >slow to reload
      >way too slow to reload in melee combat range
      >more guns = more dead enemies
If you had 2 or 3 and could carry them why wouldn’t you?

        Anonymous

Not arguing he didnt, but unless they were some kind of pocket/travelling affairs or one of those tiny Scottish Highland guns its gonna be very awkward to carry more than two. Had a flintlock 1777 Charleville pistol, which is fairly compact for a period military gun and this fricker still weighted like 3lbs. Its clearly designed to be tucked into the belt or sash, having a hook mounted on the side.

At 3-4lbs per gun and even with 6 guns that’s 18-24lbs. Not light, but certainly not so heavy is an issue. Rifle plates, 3 mags, and water is 20+ lbs and we consider that normal. Very easy to add extra mags and gear and be 30-35lbs on your vest

          Anonymous

Yknow it is in fact possible to carry 18 pounds for a while.

A gun can be used to win a fight or at least stack the odds heavily in your favor, thus it only makes sense that if you can you'd take as many guns as you can get away with.
This is why carrying multiple pistols was extremely commonplace even outside piracy context when close quarters combat was expected and the carrier wouldn't get fatigued by it too much, so you'd see cavalrymen having multiple pistols in their saddle holsters, defenders of fortified positions keeping literal barrels of guns handy and so on.
Even dual wielding in the context of smoothbore flintlocks isn't that bad of an idea - you probably got no sights anyway and firing two shots at once will be better than one after another because your view will be obscured by smoke after the shot.
Same with wielding a gun and a melee weapon at the same time, but at least we know that used to happen commonly as far as WW1.

It because they think that there is a bullet out there for everyone that is destined to kill you if fired, but that you can confuse it by dressing as a woman.

A woman to be killed on her wedding day, what is supposed to be the happiest day of her life? That would be too tragic.

On the grand scheme of whacky african war superstitions it's not even that bad of an idea. Some poor sod somewhere in africa might have actually gotten killed because the last thought to go through his mind (shortly followed by lead and skull fragments) was "what is that motherfricker doing in a wedding dress?"

Have to look the part. If you look like you know what you're doing and act like you know how to do it people will be impressed/curious instead of scared/confused. My autistic as frick nephew, and I mean AUTISTIC not just on the spectrum, walks around in a yellow medieval gambeson that has a sheriff badge, a big backpack that was made to look like a ninja turtle shell, and carries a stuffed pig everywhere. This homie radiates a confidence normal people can't achieve so instead of getting laughs he gets weird hand gestures and nods.

Simply asking this question on /k/ means you don't have the confidence to go full pirate.

Then you just call them insane for carrying 7 flintlock pistols.
