if you hit the primer on the back of the cartridge really hard with something pointy it might explode, but you're not going to do that and even if you did it's not that dangerous for cartridges to explode outside of a chamber

That is the dumbest fear I've ever heard and I'm a yuropoor with no guns. If anything I'm afraid of handling grenades because I've always been shit at throwing things.

This is the dumbest fear I've ever heard and I'm an American surrounded by Americans. Why are yuros all basically women at this point?

You have no idea how morons handle grenades. Basically all our officers on the grenade throwing range had white hairs. It's totally justified to fear nades.

I've been an RSO at the grenade range a few times. People do weird shit when they're scared. Grenades can be intimidating if you're a POG PFC who's never done it.

Nah you’re being moronic. There is no reason for it go off unless you have the tips of firing pins surgically implanted into your fingertips or are loading the mags in 1000 degree ambient temperature.

Even if, for whatever reason, they did go off, the bullet and case would accelerate away from eachother only until the bullet leaves the case and The pressure within the case vents into the atmosphere (whereas in a gun barrel would continue accelerating the bullet). It is not the same as a gunshot. Injury is not likely unless the case his your eye or something. The bullet will actually more or less stay put while the much lighter case is accelerated away from it.

^^applies to MOST cartridges. One time someone tried to hammer a pin in with the base of a 50BMG cartridge, and he blew his hand off, but that’s already grenade tier quantities of powder.

Put a handful of rounds in your pants pocket, coat pocket and work bag and carry them around for a week. They won't go off and then you'll know they are perfectly safe to handle

This. I carried a FMJ 30-06 round in one of my jackets for something like 2 years before I finally put it back in box. My biggest worry was I'd forget about it and take it through airport.

Why did you carry a 30-06 on you for 2 years?

Did the same with a 30-30 round that fell out of my pack in my trunk while deer hunting. I saw it the next day and without thinking put it in my coat pocket. A few weeks later in a "sensitive" location wearing the same coat I felt something in my pocket. Pulled it out and immediately put it back when I realized what it was. By some miracle nobody saw. Said I "forgot a paper" in my car and hid it

Yes you're being moronic but I have had someone yell at before for "flagging" them with a loaded magazine.

you're moronic. I load rimfire cartridges and drop them on concrete all the time accidentally and they never go off. just shove those motherfrickers in there.

I'm like 75% sure this is a troll post. But on the off chance this isn't, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for one comment. It is very hard to get a cartridge to fire outside of a gun. The environment is designed to make it fire. This is one among many of the reasons cartridges haven't changed much in basic form for over 100 years. You'd need something very small gauge to hit the primer near the center, and with a fair amount of force and speed at that. Take a bullet in your hand and just try to get it to fire without any tools. Even if you threw it against a wall as hard as possible, it wouldn't go off. You may flat-spot the bullet or maybe even unseat it and have the powder come out. But, it would take an absolute miracle; the primer would have to hit something sharp in a tiny area. I don't know the chances, but it's astronomically low.

I mean the the environment *that* is designed to make it fire. (The chamber)

Bullets get most of their kinetic energy while being confined in the breach and having gas expand behind them. Being in the open reduces their velocity significantly and cases often split, primers often blow out. Still dangerous, just not as dangerous.

this reminds me of hideous destructor for GZdoom where if you load that case less rounds into a magazine too quickly they have a chance to detonate in your hand, causing you pain
also the mags and gun that takes them have drm so you can't use a partially used magazine without forcing the magazine in and scrambling your round counter built into the gun

One thing I learned from 3D printing glocks is that it's honestly harder to get a round to go off than you'd think. You can get a pretty fricking deep indentation on most primers before enough force is imparted to detonate the chemicals.

This. The firing pin must be forceful enough to dent metal
