honestly starting off with DCS you're probably not going to understand anything and hate it

i recommend starting somewhere easier like

    >War Thunder
    >Project Wingman
    >Ace Combat
    >IL-2 Sturmovik (if you want something more realistic)

    walk before you crawl

It's more a pay to progress. Play as Germany, if you want to have some fun. Soviet planes are cool, but they have zero ammo, jap and brit planes outturn everything but their guns are shit, American planes suck until you get to jets (I'm a noob btw)

USA planes are good, it’s just all about how you play them.
I’m not very good but I know you’ve got to energy fight, you can energy fight no matter what plane you’re in, it’s just easier in high performance machines like German climbers like the bf 109 or Japanese or English turn fighters.

            >USA planes are good
Spoken like someone who never played US planes past tier 2, they're absolute dogshit until jets because the maps are so small that climb rate matters more than everything else

Yeah I know. I know I’m not very good. I squeezed out a 3 kill no death with the 50 cal bearcat. Probably the only air rb I’m proud of.

US planes are great, the p51s are some of the nicest flying props in the game only held back by firepower and the heavy fighters (p39s, f82, p61) are energy fighting monsters.

American planes are great. You just need to learn how to play them. Conserve energy. Dumb your infinite .50's and climb back up after diving.

American planes pre-jet fall almost squarely in between the bongs and krauts. Good speed, climb, dive and being able to turn fairly well when necessary while also having good guns with practically infinite ammo. The only downside is having to deal with a third of your team being useless bombers sometimes.

I've spent over $4,000 on War Thunder and I still get my shit shoved in regularly. Like the other anon said it's more pay to progress than anything.
I don't have three months to grind out an entire tree and spade everything so I just spend $400 to unlock all the shit I want so I can use my time better.

        read aircraft nerd sites like
        https://theaviationist.com/
        https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone

try War Thunder. It's free. Start on "realistic" air battles. arcade is too ... arcade-y. learn energy fighting and basic air combat maneuvers. Move onto Sim battles.

If you find sim level enjoyable, you'll probably like DCS. Which is waaaaay more involved.

I've put in less than $200 in the game over the last several years. you don't win anything by getting the top tier vehicles. sure if you want a particular aircraft you can work your way up, but paying for them all... anon, I...

I didn't pay for them all. I skipped two entire trees because I did not give a fuck about their vehicles (China and Israel) I only really play top tier shit anymore and a few select BRs below 11.3/7
I have also just paid to skip past shit that flat out wasnt enjoyable.
I also buy most of the event vehicles after the events.
I make decent money so it's whatever, my time is worth more than having to grind out all the miserable BRs

As others have pointed out it’s pay to progress. My advice, don’t pay for any high tier vehicle, you won’t know what you’re doing, and won’t have a good time. Also, don’t look at top tier as the goal, if you try to grind for the f16 as fast as possible it’s going to be miserable because you won’t appreciate all the ww2 content, which honestly has more interesting gameplay anyway.

        t. Been playing it since before it left beta, top tier air for US, USSR, UK, Sweden, currently doing the Chinese tree in sim only to get good with sticks

luck and lots of work iirc
you really have to like flying and be ready to put your self into a situation where you have no real control

Gramps is licensed pilot who play's Microsoft flight simulator in his spare time.
he tyred to teach me about glide slopes and stall speed, prop pitch and all that. but I failed to grasp such things

they all are, it feels good to btfo of a pay piggu, but ultimately its a waste of time

If you ever played fighting games against other people, dogfighting in DCS is way harder. You're gonna have to research real-life maneuvers and understand what all the displays and gauges are for.

    It's a whole pipeline
    >play Ace Combat (or if you're a masochist, War Thunder) to become familiar with modern and WWII jets respectively. You won't really learn anything but basic familiarization goes a long way
    >Watch documentaries, ideally on the Gulf War to understand how modern aircraft operate in the context of a full-scale war (The Operations Room has an excellent video on this)
    >Read the wiki articles for planes you like, although the info might not be 100% accurate you'll get a general overview of the plane's strengths and weaknesses, and will understand the role it fills/was supposed to fill
    >Once you're feeling confident, and want more of a challenge than Ace Combat, hop onto DCS and get your shit pushed in because you don't actually know how to fly a plane
    >Through trial, error, and patience, learn how to fly DCS's SU-25T
    >Buy a full-fidelity plane, don't worry about whether one plane is tougher to learn than another, just pick the one you like the most
    >Get your shit pushed in again because the SU-25 was basically on training wheels
    >Through trial, error, and patience, learn how to fly that full-fidelity plane
It takes time like any other interest or hobby. Go at your own pace and have fun with it. It's a huge topic and you'll never run out of cool planes to learn about

watch dogfights. almost every episode can be watched for free on YouTube. is it the most accurate thing? no. but it's cool as heck and you will never see a production budgeted like it ever again. also they interview a number of the pilots who were actually there (including Japanese and German ww2 pilots), many of whom are no longer with us

DON'T play warthunder and DON'T give your money to those greedy slavic motherfuckers. play literally any other air sim. trust me on this. i've got like 2k hours over several years of gameplay and the game is the worst it's ever been. Gaijin has a strong, almost perverse adherence to the "Frustration" gaming model where your rewards will be so miniscule and the game is so "FUCK YOU" in every regard that'll you'll just be so frustrated you'll feel compelled to buy a premium account and a premium plane. and yes. they are pay to win regardless of what everyone else says. premium planes are designed to be retard proof so any dumb gay can play high tier and get at least a kill.

all according to plan, and the game is free to play so you have some poor fag peasants to dab on
I dont think the model works very well if only whales can afford to play the game

8.7 jet RB is currently the single best game mode that has ever existed in the entire history of war thunder

no way. 8.7 never sees anything better than AIM-9s & red tops.

They need to add at least 2 more BRs and stop giving jets BRs so they can fit into ground RB lineups.

Very dependent on module to module - some are dead fucking simple, others have a lot of "can't get there from here" going on in subsystems. It's got a free baseline nowadays with the free Su-25, and you can do two-week trials on all of the "complete" modules to see if you like them. There's also a couple of pretty well fleshed out mods, an A-4 and a UH-60 that are both pretty well thought of. If you get FC3, the "sim-lite" package of several aircraft, you don't get clicky pits but you get a decent roster of aircraft and they're fairly easy to pick up with simplified systems.
