Why though? What's the point of the front wheel?

I think it was easier to steer the whole machine, instead of using cranks

No. If you want the true answer then brace for autism.

Well, the video stole a lot of my thunder, but he missed a very important part. The half motorcycle assembly is largely mechanically irrelevant. The vehicle functions without it. It's primary purpose is psycho/social. Whereas the US was very well on its way to being heavily populated with automobiles by the start of the war, Germany was not, and subsequently did not have a sizeable cadre of drivers. What they did have was a large number of motorcycles and experience with such. The primary purpose of the motorcycle portion is to provide an interface with which the driver is familiar. This decreased the amount of training time necessary for them to become competent drivers.

lol so you turn the front wheel to skid steer?

              >so you turn the front wheel to skid steer?
Yeah, but it is only necessary as a feedback device to give the driver a sense of control. You could remove all of the wheel and suspension, etc. and it would work fine. There is an interface that meshes with the handlebars to control the tracks, so some of it is critical for function, but not how it appears - that stuff is hidden. What everyone sees is the wheel. I think the overlooked social aspect is absolutely intriguing. Germany would never make one today. They have so many automotive drivers. It was a device for a specific time and place. Still to this day, there are different licensing schemes for motorcycles and automobiles in Germany, and there is a lot of motorcycle use, but the disparity will likely never be again what it once was.

Easy if you have the required skills and studied the vehicle. If you have to ask PrepHole you are wildly unlikely to have that in-depth understanding.

If you want an actual match to the tracks and undercarriage, you can't afford it. If you just want to play get a skid steer, remove blade and any counterweights then fab a simple girder front end like the original and attach that with modded controls. You could connect the front end to a mechanical mixer (as in flight controls) to control the tracks.

A larger high flotation tire could actually make the wheel useful and you could power that hydrostatically. Look at ag machines for some very cool ways to power stuff. Farmers build their one equipment surprisingly often as they have all the skills for their jobs.

Better yet, buy the skid steer and have much more fun using the attachments. You will never build a kettenkraftrad because you had to ask how. Play at that level requires becoming your own subject matter expert to know what questions to ask in the first place. Some things are like that.

Lever steering is ancient and much older than WWII, but German autism came up with that thing. Not everything that looks cool is the best design and the only reason anyone cares is how it looks which is fine. No front wheel is needed which is why tankettes are not half-tracks.
