They did. Zeon occupied it in the initial invasion, the EF invaded later and drove them out for good. And the EF won because they had an ever-increasing number of GMs and wacky Gundam prototypes that even Zeon's superweapon fetish couldn't keep up with. I swear every year there's 500+ new OYW manga/video game/OAV side stories that add ANOTHER 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 billion limited-production GMs and early Gundams to the battle PER STORY, to the point where Earth's rotation should've been affected by the Pleiades Cluster-sized mass of lunar titanium, beam rifles, and angsty teenage Newtypes rolling into Odessa like a fricking Minovsky-powered Katamari Damacy ball. They literally had no chance even if M'Quve's nuke had worked correctly.

GMs were limited to like a single battalion or so at Odessa. Zeon lost because the Feddies brought just straight-up WWII eastern front amounts of tanks and artillery to that dance and proceeded to bury them under a mountain of shells and bodies.

Not according to nearly every OYW side story that's come out since 1997 or so. Each one adds like at least a thousand unique prototype GMs and crazy Wing/SEED-esque super Gundams to the battle because there's a massive gunpla kit sales quota Bandai needs to meet by next quarter. I swear for every Type 61 at Odessa there's now a million custom prototype GMs/Guntanks/Guncannons/Gundams with all sorts of timeline-breaking Psycommu superweapon shit. I fully expect to see some sort of EF psycoframe Unicorn Destroy Mode Angel Halo prototype to show up in the next OYW Odessa side story retelling to zap all the Zeon troops with fricking brain-cooking Newtype beams before the battle even starts. It's become a fricking self-parody at this point. I don't even know where to start.

Your not even talking about the mess that is A Baoa Qu which went from a reasonable GM spam vs surplus Zeon to now where it is Gundams vs Zeta-era mobile suits. They know what makes the franchise sell gunpla, but have basically fricked the story.

You're totally right, it's gotten to the point where the tiny Raideen cameo in the big A Baoa Qu scene would actually be kinda underpowered.

You're mistaking a handful of prototypes and early production GMs for the entirety of the battle because they're what's getting the spotlight, anon. You're watching scenes of at best battalion-size engagements, in a battle between ARMY GROUPS.

Now that you mention it — when did Gundams go from ultra specialist magical soul-link secret super science weapon to the baseline system everyone needs to be even pretend to be competitive? It’s like mobile suites now are like the mobik with rusty AK driving golf carts, literally just fodder Gundams consume as filler.

In 0080 they were still clearly intended as an ace unit, even when the Federation fielded other capable designs like the GM Sniper.
In 08th MS team the "Gundams" were little more than glorified GMs.

Since the original 1979 show. The GMs are literally just slightly worse versions of RX-78 and the Gelgoog is outright superior.

The Gelgoog is only a grunt unit because all Zeonic aces had died by then.

At the mid point of the original Gundam. Once the gelgoog was created everyone could make a Gundam-equivalent machine, but since Zeon had wasted all it's resources to get to the gelgoog while the EF cut costs to the 3 mobile suit program down to just the GM being the all purpose mobile suit (with guntank and guncanon specialists and ball support) it didn't really matter to anyone but the Zeon top brass about beating the Gundam.

The RX-78 has no Psycommu capabilities. In fact I don't believe the Federation had made any progress at all on Psycommu research before the end of the OYW.

          Anonymous

They did with HADES and EXAM but it was more about using new types as a battery rather than pilot/machine integration. That has really been the entire story with development of mobile suits, that EF sees newtypes as purely weapons while Zeon sees them as the next step/master race. Really the only time EF suits had any type of psycho gear was because of having former Zeon scientists or leaking of Zeon schematics. The Alex is a good example of this as they couldn't do anything with Amuro's emerging powers other than to just overtune a RX-78 and give it more advanced gear.

More like the T-55: straight up better than anything that their enemies had when they were first produced, but rapidly became outclassed. However, they built a frickload of them, so they're still hanging around in various third world countries.

Yeah don't mention how the Federation made about 500+ of the basic GM from it's roll-out (late September/October) to War's end (December). Or how they now had enough spare parts of the RX-78 that more then 23+ of the ground gundams were produced.

Gundam was a fluke as it was suppose to be the melee suit while the gun cannon would be the more standard mobile suit. With Amuro as the pilot and most of the other mobile suits being destroyed, the Gundam was forced to be multi-purpose and ended up succeeding which is why guncannons and guntank were largely mothballed in favor of GMs

          Anonymous

Do you count the Gundam Hammer as a melee weapon?
Was the Beam Javelin an official development or some modification Amuro made himself?

        Anonymous

The RX-78 wasn't even really that special. It had good armour and even better weaponry, but both of these aspects became standard issue before the war was even over. After a certain point, it can't simply tank its way through fights and is entirely reliant on Amuro's skill. It even needs an upgrade at one point to get it to keep up with Amuro's speed.

RX-78 was a snowball. It doesn't really matter that it was outclassed by the end when it carried Amuro into becoming a living weapon himself.

It's like how Germany couldn't just spam Pz IV's against the allies, they didn't have enough men, material, or fuel to actually do that and trade 1 to 1. Zeon had fewer resources and men at its disposal so they relied on their tech advantage. Feds bridged the tech gap, even surpassed it by mass issuing beam weapons on the suits, and combined it with their superior numbers.

        Anonymous

Usually how it goes in UC. Zeon starts off with some neat new toy, feda get a hold of it, say wow neat, let me try, dump way more money into building their own version than zeon could ever hope to, and grind zeon into the dirt with it. This continues up into Unicorn with the Feds accidentally creating three mechanical gods.

        >so they relied on their tech advantage
Kek, Germans didn't actually have a tech advantage, though.

The computer was the strongest part.

It would have been even better if Amuro had used Tem's upgrade.
