Not to mention they're increasingly not relevant. I'm all for having a floating airstrip, but the US has bases all over and European countries are free to use them so... Why invest in an aircraft carrier again? You're kind of reinventing the wheel.

Well anon, airfields are very easy to notice and attack with just basic spy satellites, you can probably find every major NATO airbase all over europe. Meanwhile, having 11 Supercarriers allows much more reach, and the ability to strike from less expected avenues

You act as if carriers are not constantly monitored.
The fact is not every country needs a supercarrier. It's not in every country's interest, it's not in every country's budget, and it's not necessary if you have an ally that builds airforces anywhere. Also, what enemy does France have that would be using spy satellites? Russia? I think they're well in hand at this point.

Problem with supercarriers is, also, that losing one could potentially be catastrophic in morale since they have become such a focal point in strategy. It's almost a liability.

              Anonymous

You miss the point that one carrier can take out a dozen or more warships. For some reason those things that are on top of carriers, called "fighter jets" are always ignored.

                Anonymous

Is that why the carrier needs an entire fleet protecting it?

                Anonymous

It's specialisation and safety in numbers.

Rather than have every ship doing lots of things to a mediocre standard, you have different elements doing a few tasks and excelling. Carriers are the long arm of the fleet, and able to outrange every other ship by combining the range of their planes with missile range.

Every lone warship is vulnerable, and in a scenario with air power involved (all modern naval conflicts), they're sitting ducks to a large enough air strike wing. Having multiple warships allows mutual support by covering multiple angles, avoids target saturation and also compensates for weaknesses.

                At least, that's the theory.

                Anonymous

That is true. You can basically surpass the reach of land-based cruise missiles through a carrier+plane+missile combo.

except half the modern challenge with carrier groups is the land based antishipping missile outrages the strike fighter and payload. At least with the trade offs needed in modern stealth craft.

In terms of defending the west and democracy, the EU is carrying less weight than it should relative to the US but even if it did, building supercarriers like the US would be far from an ideal spend. They’d be better off trying to reach parity and complement US air and space assets while having enough land forces to fight and win a total war with Russia.

Ukraine spent their money effectively on gear and training. NATO defence spending is bloated from benefits and salary, which prevents most countries from fielding a large, well equipped and well trained conventional army.

I like to use Canada as an example because the CF is the worst culprit. Half of Canadian defence spending goes towards paying out benefits. By the time the money makes its way through the bureaucracy there’s only a fraction of a fraction left afterwards dedicated to procurement. For example, The CF spent 100 million dollars on "culture change" (anti-white, anti-Canadian indoctrination) initiatives last fiscal year to give you an idea what Ottawa prioritizes (and then they wonder why there is a recruiting crisis).

You know burger anon, post-war France has always done its utmost to depend as little as possible on the USA for its defense, limiting its acquisitions to a few dedicated systems. Of course, it's nice and often obligatory to have America on our side to help us out in certain circumstances, especially as France often has to content itself with being America's sidekick due to a lack of power to project rather than a lack of power projection capabilities. But you need to understand defense in western Europe isn't treated as well as in the USA. With more money and incentives for military careers, France could afford a second carrier and more stuff overall, but despite the recent ramp up, it's still in a bad shape, roughly half of what it used to be at the end of the cold war. It's a sample army, with a little bit of everything, most of it being done in-house or thanks to cooperations among EU partners. There is no point to just buy everything from the USA as it doesn't actually pushes clients to become partners. They just buy tranquility of the mind and hope the USA will be there to provide the necessary logistics to make the US-made stuff work.
I think a partner should not be a burden or a copycat. The truth is we simply aren't big enough.

Anyway, more BPC aka PHA pics with choppers onboard.

The true purpose of the EU is to bring muzzies and naggers into Brussels to erode Belgian national (kek) identity so Walloon and Flanders can go back where they rightfully belong.

So they while wanting to keep the country for gibs undermine the country by being arrogant haughty shits but without anything to back up said arrogance

Belgium was created. It is an artificial country that is needed in its current form. Until that changes, the ones who created it will not allow for the so called dissolution to happen.
                Get over it.
Also, as a Flemish, what do you think your future will be if Belgium splits? An Independent Flemish State? You would be so small that you would be ridiculous. You are not Liechtenstein or Luxembourg. Do you want to become a tax haven?
What is the alternative? Joining the Netherlands? Oh, I am sure you would hate it, after just a week. As you would hate joining any other country (as in "being annexed"): you would then experience what having your cultural identity attacked and diluted really means; that seems to be your main reason for crying since decades, so I'd imagine you should be sensitive to that.

How big would a ship need to be if its main purpose was to launch drones? I'd say something like that is much more future proof for EU.

This actually sounds like something that could be French doctrine, too. They're one of the very few true blue water navies in the world, and I can imagine them just having a handful of frigates with cheap drones they can launch over Niger and Myanmar

      Anonymous

Depends how many and how capable you want the drones to be.
For 1-2 smaller/VTOL drones a frigate sized ship would do. For anything larger or higher in number you're going to need a dedicated carrier.

A useful niche for drones on full-size carriers would be refuelling tankers or screening duties for the fleet. Dirty, dull and dangerous are the 3 environments automation excels in

French nuclear policy ensures that its military doesn't need any expensive toys.
Not only are they more lax with nukes than any other state on the planet, but they also have an idea in the government that basically means they can strike an enemy after the main nuclear exchange in the case the enemy forgot the determination of the French people.

They've got 2 (3). The current one in construction is a helicopter carrier that can carry STOVL F-35s. Iirc they went and did an exercise with Japan a month back. Arguably Italy IS the major naval European power, but since they only have to worry about the Mediterranean sea, there's not really a need to make nuclear powered carriers and the like.

        They wish
Shit, I wish, for all their current policies and populace are giga retarded they are the only member who has the combination of power and national spirit to turn things around
After Merkel left they had a golden opportunity to move from #2 but they pushed too hard and we're tooretarded. It's only a matter of time before Germany gets top dog spot again, and Germany ain't never getting better.

          >thinks Merkel ran the EU
France is the only country in the European Union with real power, Germany has more shit on its plate than any other country in Europe, from civil unrest, to lowering standards, to rising crime, to losing influence in Eastern Europe to fucking Poland of all states, to domestic industry flight etc etc etc

France is 3rd gdp ranking hard facts that hurt you its also behind the UK in per capita.
France is a loser. Germany is number 1 then Bongland then trailing behind is the Frog

Oh. It's some seething vatnik then? Wtf has France done yet again to make these Putinist cum gobblers angry? Or is this the hamas sunday evening shift shitposting unit at work?
By the way the PHA Tonnerre won't be travelling alone, the Marine Nationale aren't crazy. Expect at least one SSN to be around to keep things in check, maybe the new Suffren which is the head of its class, as well as a FREMM to protect the Tonnerre, which will carry Tiger helicopters as well, which are really useful to distribute food and medicine, so France is not going there too unprepared.
Sad the CdG won't be there too since it's being currently overhauled, especially as Rafale M have flown over Israel in the recent years, carrying ordnance on their way to Syria and Iraq for bombing missions.
I really wanted to see bomb runs contests on local terror groups to play the game of "who can cause the most secondary explosions in hamas tunnels" game. We could bring the US navy fighters, some Typhoons from Akrotiri, and just have fun.

          We just retired our Gazelles.
In service for nearly 50 years it went everywhere.
          >Northern Ireland, Germany, Hong Kong, Falkland Islands, Canada, Kenya, Belize, Cyprus, Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan.
Sad to see it go, good bit of French kit. We should do Concorde again.

I remember the sorry state in which some of the oldest Gazelle in french service were before being retired. To fix the door handles some maintenance guys had to find Citroen 2CV door handles in a car junkyard as the mechanism was quite similar.
The last remnant ones are limited to SF missions and roles not too close from the frontlines.
Pic related. Look at this dude.

Here's a Super Frelon in the BPC Mistral hangar, these two didn't have many chances to operate together as the Mistral entered active service in 2006 while the Super Frelon left active service in 2010.

Because DeGaulle surrounded himself with stolen Resistance valor communists in the idiotically vain hope of achieving some 'anglo-independence', and that had downstream whole of society consequences -- including military and industrial. They only realistically have to provide air cover to migrant boats and the people they used to throw int he Seine will do the rest given enough time.
