Makes it easier to hide some corruption since those mechanisms are legal. And the people doing it are mostly contractors and politicians, sure it happens to some Officers. But the politicians don't want to share money with them. The less people in on your scheme is the less people you have to pay out.

America maintains a global network of bases and sea patrols that do nothing but act as a gibs system for its client states so that politicians can funnel money back to their coffers.

Like how Ukraine was used before russia fricked it up, and why trump was impeached for messing with Biden's graft in Ukraine.

Ahhh yes better to depend upon poor third worlders to combat piracy (or radical insurgencies) in their region. It will totally benefit global trade and the world order. I'm also going to point out that the U.S. can respond quicker to global emergencies like earthquakes anywhere in the world faster than anyone else.

It's around 10% of our government spending and we pay less taxes than many of our eurofriends. So our military budget is not "draining you for all you got".

Because despite the endless attempts to try and destroy it from within and without; despite the immense ugliness, age, wear, tear, and rot that constantly threaten to rip it apart; despite almost everything, the System still works. Perhaps by sheer momentum. Perhaps by the irrational self-sacrifice of thousands of unknown idealists. Perhaps only for a few more years. But somehow the System still works and produces results.

Boris Yeltsin was literally moved to tears during an unscheduled visit to a Texas supermarket. The lie of Russian socialism was exposed. The Soviets lied through their teeth about everything. But here Yeltsin was given a view of how a regular non-propagandized American supermarket worked. And it broke his mind. He thought that the capitalists lived in squalor like the rest of the third world and that American prosperity like Soviet prosperity was a propaganda device.

But despite everything that transpired in the years after, the Russians just couldn't figure out how to make capitalism work in their country. The idea of promoting people based on merit and competency, the notion of paying people according to how well they perform, the culture of mutual trust and fairness, just couldn't be translated from American to Russian.

In some ways Putin defaulting back to the typical Soviet way of doing things is understandable. It's the only tool they really know how to use. Threats, deception, nepotism, and brute force.

If only they had done what Czechia had done, which was a slow&steady privatization that had short term pains and now strong economic growth.
The US made an error in supporting Yeltsin’s reelection, and hence his firesale of Russian enterprise to his Cronies, which are now the oligarchs.

I worked at that supermarket as a teenager and only found out of this event after I had quit. It's funny since it's a pretty dumpy and ghetto store compared to the nearby HEB and despite that our ghetto dumpy supermarket was the death nail to communism. God it feels good being American.

The US has a lot of high level corruption and almost no low level corruption. Accountability is punishingly harsh at the lowest level and gets lost as you move up the ladder. Corruption requires collaboration and Americans are all social climbers with no sense of loyalty to their fellow schmucks, all being temporarily embarrassed rich guys. Only when people reach the upper crust does solidarity appear, for they've all 'made it' and all 'deserve it'.

      Partially this:
Western Euros and their descendants balance a ravenous but well-hidden lust for blood and destruction with their guilt complex. Said guilt complex boils down to the fear that a giant boogeyman (IE: a religious figure or a religious inquisition/hidden commie plot/glowie agency) will find the sin in their souls and condenm them in the next life, rather it be a literal post-death life, or denying their ability to ever become the 'rich guys'.
I have no doubt that if the United States never formed and led NATO, Western Europe would have continued this mindset themselves.

Wrong. The wunderwaffen are just a way to launder money for the gov and for the big arms to get more political influence. USA is not overly militarized because of corruption, it's overly militarized because of his aggressive foreign policy and its military industry making a big percentage of the GDP. There's no "good" corruption, no silver line. If anything, taxpayers now pay for a crapload of unreliable and overly engineered gizmos that will hardly if not at all be deployed in war.
