    >how are you supposed to conquer a heavily fortified position head-on
you don't, you surround it and starve them out

Then you failed to plan accordingly, you lose the campaign and Sun Tzu was once again proven right.

The only way you couldn't would be that you don't have enough men to surround the place which means you were a fool to start anything in the first place.

    >how are you supposed to conquer a heavily fortified position head-on, without air superiority?
rule of warfare is to secure all advantages before you begin the campaign
grand strategy is to set realistic goals within the capabilities of your forces to begin with
    >just throw units at it until it falls?
build a defensive ring around the enemy fortifications to ward off relief forces
keep mobile reserves ready to counter the enemy ability to counter-encircle your forces

if the enemy keeps pouring men into the hardpoint, thats men that isnt going elsewhere
so its possible to attack a different area entirely
keep the defenders guessing where the main axis of advance is

shell the place with arty and sweep the remaining rubble
if it's not an urban area you could try a tank assault but it's usually not a good idea
starving them out is foolproof but time consuming

The swedish word for "fortress" also used to mean "prison" up until the late 1800s.

In 'The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress' Heinlein used mass launchers as artillery. The trebuchet is artillery.

Brainlet here. What are the tactical differences between a trebuchet and a catapult?

          Anonymous

Catapult is torsion draw, trebuchet uses a counterweight (generally speaking).

A catapult functions with torsion strength much like a crossbow or a bow, while a trebuchet is more similar to a sling that works on gravity.

Is one more effective than the other for siege warfare?

Trebuchets had on average a longer range and could handle heavier loads I think, mostly because they tend to be larger.

Catapult is generally more portable and cheaper. Depending on the ammo catapults can be far more accurate.

Catapult is torsion draw, trebuchet uses a counterweight (generally speaking).

          They said tactical differences.

You pretend like that is heavily defended but I'm just going to yolo 400 archers/crossbowmen into the towers until they are clear on one side, yeet some rocks into the wall, and unga 200 swordsmen straight at the lord unless you feel like burning down your entire castle and crippling yourself for the next attack.

Spam fire ballistas and catapults (or you can systematically destroy the towers with trebutches without getting into their range if you're a fricking pussy), use archers/crossbows for support and then send in your melee troops of choice to clean up the lord.
