I've never heard of one having a catastrophic failure. So that doesn't sound like a real issue. How is the accuracy? That's all I care about.

They are heavy chunks of cheap ass metal that are a little harder to handle than say, a GLAWK. They have issues with almost any aftermarket, or even company bought product other than the normal mags, and lastly, limited capacity because as i said, as soon as you try an extended mag, you run into issues.
If you want one as a "fuck it, i don't care what happens to it" gun, you can get nothing better. If you want a good EDC, you have numerous better options.
The only thing I care about is the accuracy. I've shot a lot of guns but I've never owned one. I go to dear camp and someone hands me a gun. I'm not picky. Limited handgun experience overall but if it shoots straight i can probably make it work. It's just for self defense since this is a very bad rural neighborhood.

Get an AR. PSA makes $300 AR-15s. Handguns are hard to use, you'd likely have the same accuracy with your Ghetto Blaster Hi-Point and a Gucci-Glock. You have to train with pistols a lot more than a rifle. If you absolutely must have a pistol, get a used Glock.
Accuracy is not necessarily an issue with Hi-points. But overall reliability is, and yes their sights do suck so that would play into your accuracy question. Lastly, they are heavy and your bitch wrists may feel some strain.
Last pistol I shot was a heavy old 38 snub nose. Weight isn't the issue. The problem with a rifle is going to be visibility. I need to be able to carry it into town. Nearest real town is Springfield Missouri. Google the crime statistics. They have neo nazis on meth robbing banks.

If you want a Hi-point, go get one. They suck for multiple reasons. I've told you. You can't do anything to them after you buy them, they're heavy, and they have shitty sights (that you cannot replace, at least not cheaply or easily)
The sight thing is why i won't get one then. I don't care about the rest. It can be clunky, it can be heavy. The only things I care about are price and accuracy. I don't need 30 rounds.

Have you considered that you can just not fire 30 rounds? Modern guns hold a lot because that's just what can comfortably fit. There's no reason for a double stack pistol to not hold 17 rounds or a rifle 30 because it's not hurting anything. And even if you had a 100 round drum, you could just, you know, not shoot more than you need to

Revolvers with 7-9 round capacity have existed since the 1860's because even back then people across the world wanted more capacity, and semi0auto pistols with decent capacity became the norm in the early 1900s. You now have the ability to buy amazing weapons that give you the edge, by giving you many more shots.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but if I were you I'd save up another ~$100-200 and get some flavor of RIA or Taurus at least. People say that Hi Point is better than Jimenez/Phoenix/whatever, but it seems like the same kind of thing to me.

12-21 is normal depending on the caliber of pistol. 30 is normal depending on the rifle (basically any rifle that accepts magazines defaults to 30 unless you are looking at older rifles)

Hipoints are shit, but a shit gun is better than no gun
Hi-Points are pretty... but in lack of that, and despite what all of the Gucci Glock Loyalists say...they make up for it in proven Reliability, Durability, and Excellent Value.
They work and they are economical and reliable. The only downside is they are butt fucking ugly and nobody wants to make aftermarket parts for them. The carbines are excellent for Walmart-tier garbage.
