Ex-coastie here, recruitment itself isn't super hard, it's just unknown. CG recruiters usually serve a wide area. Not unheard of to communicate only via email.

You do a PT test when you show up to boot camp. If you don't pass (30 pushups, maybe 50 crunches and like a 12:30 1.5 mile?) then you are sent home. You can try again but they don't do this nonsense of keeping you there for a year if not in shape. You don't do much PT after boot camp though. I recall maybe 2 or 3 PT tests while I was in for 6 years

CG is a great way to go though. I did migrant and drug interdiction mostly in the gulf.

I'm in as a non rate right now. I've been thinking about which rating I'd like to go for and I'm split between AMT or MK. Former seems to have a good quality of life but the latter has the law enforcement work I was hoping to do when I first joined. Help me out, coastie-bro? the Army makes a point of telling you they gotcho ass forever and if you can't PT they put you in hell indefinitely until you go insane or get hospitalized and wash out and then try and deny you benefits, I think they actually like it when boots can't measure up immediately because it gives them more paperwork to justify their rates

Army bootcamp was nothing like that. We had a guy who could only do 13 push ups on his first PT test and they worked with him to get him up to like 35 before he decided to separate. The only people who get treated like absolute shit are the guys to threaten suicide because then you’ve got to guard them 24/7 and they can’t have a rifle. So their training is basically paused and there has to be a second guard shift just to watch them sleep.

That would be the National Guard, but Coasties do quite well for themselves.

They see more action in a year than all the other branches combined and are about the most buttoned up organization in the military.
However, they are also incredibly selective (harder to get into than Air Force), extremely sane and rank the highest of all the armed branches and in the top 5 of all federal agencies for job satisfaction and retention so they are not very /k/ at all

      >more police officers than a real military force
      ah, no.

This depends on your idea of action and what constitutes selective. Maritime law enforcement? Sure, if you count the occasional "seize cocaine from some moron". Actual honest to God firefights? Pretty rare. Plenty of my friends have done more than 10 years in the CG and never fired a shot outside of qual.

Not mega /k/, but objectively the best branch because of the amount of actual help and value they provide the civilian world.

The Space Force and Navy unironically have the biggest impact on your life by far. GPS and satellite communication + trade by sea are enormous and the US basically ensures those things.

They've had purpose-built ships since WWII. Most of their larger cutters are literally frigates without heavy armament or sensors, but are built "for-but-not-with" so these can be quickly/easily installed in wartime when they transfer from DHS to DOD.

Cool Coast Guard Fact: The Law Enforcment Officer' Safety Act authorizes all law enforcment in the US to carry a gun off duty anywhere in the US. The law is worded so broadly it includes some Coast Guardsmen since they have some law enforcement powers.

There's a gap between federal law and DHS policy.
By law, and based on some court rulings, LEOSA probably automatically covers all CG members E4 and above. But the internal formal credentialing policy only recognizes members as 'qualified' if they're command-certified current boarding officers, CGPD, or CGIS agents.

Wow I sure fricked up that sentence. What I meant to say was
      >Yes. All qualified law enforcement can carry a gun sold in interstate commerce in any US state regardless of that state's laws.

      >regardless of that state's laws
Not quite..leosa holders still have to follow MA carry laws when in MA, NY laws when in NY, etc like mag capacity restrictions and off-limits areas. The leosa permit doesn't override any state laws. It just tells state LEOs of wherever you travel "treat the permitholder as if they have a [your state] permit".

What does your physique look like? Also, saying shit like "I'll likely fail" is already self selecting yourself out. If you're already training (you should be if you want any chance of succeeding) make sure you're focusing on these 3 things: land conditioning (cardio, pushups, pullups, etc.), swimming with fins, mask, snorkel (swimming without gear is important, but finning is your bread and butter in school and the job), and underwater confidence - be extremely comfortable doing underwater laps back to back to back
