Hoarder cleanup

I'm cleaning up after a hoarder soon, any tips guys?

It's fricking bad. Massively piss and shit stained carpet is my biggest concern. What's the absolute cheapest thing I can replace the carpet with when we inevitably have to rip it out?

Once you rip out the carpet/paddings you might have to treat the bottom floor with urine chemicals especially if it was a cat. 2ft of the bottom of drywall may need to be replaced due to cat spraying as well.

Look into local carpet suppliers/installers for cheap carpet rolls rather than Homedepot
Sell anything worthwhile on Ebay via sold listings to recoupe cost

second this but wooden floors may also need to be sealed even after aggressive disinfecting and deodorizing.
Also consider hiring the carpet and pad removal out, a few hundred bucks is well worth not being exposed to pathogens or dealing with disposal, and pros work quick.
Carpet is pretty much the cheapest floor covering when you consider installation and you can save big on quality material with remnants and overstock.

    Cheapest is paint.
Next step up is is stick on vinyl tiles.
Next is go to a bunch of carpet stores and find remnants, each room will probably be different, but you might luck out and they don't clash visually.

Protect your lungs and eyes, wear PPE.

are they out of the picture?
the most important think about cleaning up hoarding is to make sure the hoarder isnt present when you do it or they will pull half the shit back out of the dumpster

He's still there, but he's cool and reasonable. The hoard isn't out of a need to hang on to everything, but rather out of inactive depression

Are you the guy from /soc/ that was offering to clean anon's houses for free?

    Contractor here.

First get a dumpster. Second wear mechanics gloves, boots, a mask, and clothes you can throw away when you are done. You may need a 2nd set of hands if you encounter some heavy stuff.

But you are gonna put in a day, probably 2, just putting everything into the trash and throwing everything away. Any fabric, carpet is gonna have to get ripped out. Some appliances may be so fricked up you just take them out of the house and throw them out.

Once everything is out, I would get in there with a bucket full of hot water, some bleach, and big ass scrub brush and some big ass sponges. Just fricking swab and scrub and clean the frick out of every surface, walls included. Then once you have everything as clean as possible, then start up with the wet shop vacuum and wet vac the frick out of everything. This would also be a great time to open up all the windows and let the house air out. If it's winter that's gonna suck, but that's what the place needs.

After all that if you still have smells, try to locate the source and get shit cleaned out. Beyond that rent an ozone machine and ozone the house.

After that you're gonna need some light remodeling to get the house up to speed.

I cleaned out a hoard a couple of years ago. Almost killed me. This is good advice.

Burn the place down, preferably with the hoarder still inside.

    >tfw mom is a hoarder
    >trying to get her to start throwing stuff out so I don't have to rent a dumpster when she dies
    >she fricking cried when I threw away a box of binders with old as frick papers she hadn't looked at in 5+ years
    >gave up after that episode

frick hoarding man, I just don't get it. she realized she doesn't need all the crap piled up in her house and has directly stated it multiple times, but refuses to actually start getting rid of stuff.
as a result I'm a borderline minimalist and am constantly donating/selling things I don't use anymore.

The proper way to do a hoarder cleanout is to wait for them to die in their filth and then bulldoze the property.
I think every one of these delusional fricks should be hauled outside, tied to a chair, and forced to watch as every precious scrap of their hoard is hauled away forever. Then they should be committed to a mental hospital until they learn to deal with their grief.

You have to get rid of stuff when she is not watching. It will still be a mess but you can sort out nasty stuff

Why arent you throwing actual trash away, instead of binders of papers which she worked on?
Hoarders are sentimental and put emotional value onto items.
I know a lot of people who would be extremely mad if you threw their high school notepads away. Doesnt mean they are hoarders.

Stick with shit thats actually trash, and clearly isnt that sentimental.

homie the binders were just printed sheets of some regulations for her old job. she didn't "work on" them, she didn't even read them. they were just in a box in the garage for years.

Hmm, I wonder what or who triggered this poor lady to become a hoarder.
It really makes you think anon.

Im trying to get you to understand what your mother is thinking. Hoarding is pretty easy to understand, and pretty straightforward in easing them out of
Now look at you going off getting extremely hostile and defensive at the same time.
Its no surprise you completely and utterly failed to help your mother, and I wouldnt be surprised if you were the explicit reason she is who she is today.

                >I'm not gonna read whatever you reply btw
And im guessing your mother is going to die in her hoard too, because of your stubbornness
                Very sad indeed.

No. Hoarders are mentally ill, and assign value to objects which have none.

          >assign value to objects which have none.
Thats literally what the definition of sentimental value is anon

One may sentimentally value an object which also has general intrinsic value.

Carpet is shit. Best replace it with some other flooring that's pet friendly and easy to clean.

shes has existential dread and fear because she knows time is passing and shes approaching the end. to her, every little piece of shit that she has interacted with is an extension of her being since it isnt alive and thus will not die (unlike her). by trashing this garbage she sees you destroying her (garbage) legacy. you may be able to get her to understand that you are her legacy and not the garbage, but probably not

Get yourself an ozone generator, once everything is ripped out, let it run. It's very toxic so don't breathe that shit, but it's fantastic for getting rid of smells caused by "organic" material

If you're lucky there might be terrazzo or something underneath the carpet. My childhood house had it in almost every room of the house, in fact the whole neighborhood did. But we all covered it with linoleum and carpet. So imagine my shock when I discovered terrazzo was apparently high class.
