Anyone here ever done it? I kinda want to get into it since I only live an hour and a half away from Camp Perry and using my Garand in a competition seems like it could be fun.

I guess not.
PrepHole doesnt competitively shoot because that would require facing the fact that they're bad at the thing that's their personality
I mean I am not going to pretend I am good but I think its interesting. I like it because it seems like the same equipment can be used for years on end without having to have the latest and greatest kit.
PrepHole isn't interested in any kind of shooting that doesn't involve gunning down minorities or people PrepHole doesn't like, which is everyone. See the amount of seething in any biathlon thread.
And that's a good thing.
I recently started shooting in CMP GSM matches. I’m having a lot of fun and considering trying others. I say go for it.
What gear would you recommend starting out?
I started out just bringing my M1 and it’s sling for the GSM matches. You might need a spotting scope if the match you attend doesn’t use electronic target scoring. Go to a match and You’ll be able to see what gear other people have there too and decide if you enjoy it enough tj want to invest. I’ve only shot about three Garand matches so far and I’m looking to a shooting coat now. Learn to use a shooting sling (I use a GI web sling). You can probably find a local match and just show up to watch and learn, the people at mine were very friendly.
Would you say putting together an AR would be more sensible?
don't spend much to start out. You don't need an ambi bolt release, match front post, custom jacket. you SHOULD keep a shooting journal from day 1 though
I see no value in ambi bolt releases imo
Interesting, I thought people would use .308 more because its a bit less sensitive to wind.
eeeevvvverrryyyone in HP uses ambi release. when you're slung up in prone, you don't want to break position to chamber on a new mag
I am left handed, I can reach the release with my index finger.
Oh never mind then lol
>I see no value in ambi bolt releases imo
ambi bolt release is basically cheating in high power based on the way you are slung op on the rifle, everyone uses one
have a nice day you wrong handed gay
I'm left handed pistol shooter but righty rifle, what does that make me
a gay
ARs are definitely more competitive in High Power, most competitors will use them. GSM matches have divisions for Modern Military (basically M16 clones) and Unlimited Modern Military (ARs with anything you want on them).
Not person you asked but been on marksmanship team when inwas .mil
Shooting mat
Shooting jacket
Logbook
Spotting scope
Shooting bags etc. If class allowed
Big puffy jacket cap and mitts that fit over all your shit. It can get insanely cold waiting around.
Relevant tool kit.
Quality PPE glasses muffs etc.
Small cooler with snacks and not caffeinated lots if shooters fuck up standing around drinking coffee and get amped to oblivion. Good luck and dont sweat your first match learn and ask smart questions people are helpful.
Match organizations/directors will generally have a contact email at minimum and usually a website these days. If they don't have a full online set of resources, reach out stating you are completely new and ask for info like match rules, suggested/required equipment etc. You can also just go to a match and not participate but spectate and observe. That's what I did before joining my local uspsa matches. That way without the pressure of competing you get to talk to organizers/participants, see how stages are run and safety handled.
Don't worry about buying any extra equipment unless its required. Even if you don't have an "optimum" setup you can still shoot and have fun.
rifle, sling, shooting jacket, shooting mat, stool would be good as would a spotting scope depending on the way they do the targets and a log book
there was one dude on here who shilled it for a few weeks but he was kinda annoying
I think I remember those threads
I've done it, it's quite fun. Right now I'm putting together a match rifle. Wish Centra LR sights weren't so fucking expensive jeez
I shoot more action oriented matches but if you find a local match and email them lm sure they will answer all your questions. I highky recommend competition, it is thrilling and a great place to meet people with similar interests
I would do this if I could use my SG550 instead of an AR
you can. its just a different division but you shoot at the same time as everyone else
a. its fine
b. no one checks your chamber
ty, I didn't know how much they would be sticklers about it
I do it, most guys use an AR instead of a garand
Kind of weird AR-10 rifles aren't permitted.
AR-10s were never US military service rifles. You can shoot AR-10s for match rifle division, but I only know one guy at my local matches who does. You can also shoot M110 clones, but they have to look like M110s to be allowed in service rifle. The point of service rifle is to larp as a service rifle. Match rifle is more or less anything goes so long as it is a repeater
How accurate of an M110 clone does it have to be? LR-308 spray painted FDE? Some kind of slant-cut receivers? Actual SR-25 with correct barrel profile/handguard, etc.?
>U.S. Rifle, Caliber 7.62 mm M-110 series–– In all courses of fire and
in all positions the standard 20-round box magazine or a reduced
capacity magazine of the same external dimensions will be attached.
The flash suppressor may be removed or the rifle may be manufactured
without a flash suppressor. Barrel length may not exceed 20 inches,
as measured to the end of the rifling in the barrel. The front sling
must be attached to the end of the handguard, and must remain in the
6 o’clock position no more than 1/2 inch from its original location.
Metallic sights must be of the standard design found on the M-16
series of firearms. Rear sight windage and elevation adjustments may
be modified to allow finer adjustments. Plastic covers may be used
on the mounting rails on the handguard.
They literally are if it's an M110 clone. Kind of weird the 417 and SCAR 20 aren't allowed, though, since those are in current military service.
they only allowed M4s and acogs in 2016, until then only A2s were legal
That's also dumb. They should have allowed the XM5 the day the contract was signed.
What is good about a "National Match", NM marked barrels?
Kys
rude
Im going to shoot my first match this year, but with an AR. I made it out to look like an M16A4. I do want to do one with a Garand one day
Would a .223 Wylde barrel barrel be allowed? I feel like it would but I don't wanna get thrown out of a shoot over something this dumb.
yeah its fine
ty
JCG match is really fun but draws a lot of first time shooters to highpower that don't understand procedure. The only trophy match I've ever shot was the Hearst doubles with an M14 but I blew the reload on rapid fire when the shitty checkmate magazine wouldn't stay locked in and I saved 4 rounds when time ran out. Vintage sniper was really cool too.
remember, for each additional range cart you have, your score goes up by 10 points
I should really get one of those, just based on how gay it is carrying my shit up and down the hill
modify one of these https://www.harborfreight.com/welding-cart-65939.html
If you get into IBS benchrest, don't forget your portable press so you can cater your powdercharge for fluctuating temp and humidity throughout the day.
>my local 600yd range has electronic targets
comfy
Why are bob sleds $40
>any sport where competitors wear one glove
>hee hee
I am gonna wear a nomex flight gloce with the tip of the trigger finger cut off
Are carry handle sights okay?
Required for service rifle
oh okay
