Hi mates?

Hi mates /k/kk. I want to see your opinions on the best caliber and length of the barrel for the scout rifle and for a possible armageddon or some of that shit that appears in movies where society finally goes to the bottomless pit of anarchy.
Some options:
>22 LR
>22 Magnum
>9x19
>40 S&W
>357 Magnum

    >scut rifye
Just get some decent quality $400+ bolt gun in .308 and spend the rest on ammo, spare parts, sling, and a decent scope.

    >A true Scout comes in .308 or 7mm-08
Therefore, all the others are not scout rifles. Might be useful if SHTF, but not a scout.

Why get and underpowered .30-30 in a bolt action?

        Anonymous

Not really underpowered .30-30, relatively similar ballistics. 123gr 7.62x39 drops less at 200yds than comparable 125gr .30-30. Can also use 7.62x39 in a semi auto.

why would you buy a gun in a caliber that has maybe three whole choices for ammo type?
          >cheap shitty steelcase
          >cheap shitty HP/SP steelcase

my point is that your options for x39 are cheap shitty ammo and expensive meme ammo.

I don't understand your complaint. A combination of very cheap not so accurate ammo and very high quality boutique ammo sounds like a perfect combination. What's missing from this equation? Middling price ammo that isn't too accurate but better than steel? Who wants that?

If I weren't so poor and the rulers weren't so socialist (both in my country and in the US) I would buy three of those damn rifles in 7.62x39 5.56x45 and 6.8x43

I've been wanting one in 7.62x39 for a couple of years now, but I can never find one locally. Now if only Ruger would get off their ass and produce the XGI to shit all over Springfields overpriced m1a, I'd die a happy man.

Whatever caliber is most common where you live or .22 for hunting small game. In any SHTF scenario you'd be a lot better off with a semi auto.

If you plan on traveling to some place that doesn't allow AR15s, Jeff's purpose of it being a bolt rifle was legality in african hunting trips.
And weight, but that isn't an issue anymore.

        >Jeff's purpose of it being a bolt rifle was legality in african hunting trips.

His purpose was to maximize the effectivity of the rifleman andxstill take all game in North America, in a political climate of pending total AR bans. You did read, "Sunset At Coffin Rock"? That's where we were at and 30 years later, here we are again. The exception being the MSR is firmly rooted in the hearts and minds of consumers to the tune of a million and back then the only ARs were Armalite, Bushmaster and Colt.

There isn't one, at least for most people. Morons don't realize the "scout rifle" concept was a very specific niche which they have nothing to do with.

      Anonymous

The idea really isn't bad in theory. A light general purpose rifle with a long eye relief scope mounted forward for easy reloading. Unfortunately it's also fricking moronic and trying to fill a niche that didn't really exist in the first place.

It's not a bad idea but remember that the semi needs a lot of maintenance and for an SHTF maintenance items will not be common. Also here in my third world and communist country of the eggs they don't let us have semi-automatic weapons unless the corrupt socialist rulers give you permission.

No guns detected. A semiautomatic doesn't take much more maintenance than a bolt-action.

          Anonymous

It take more maintenence only because you shoot so much more.
But the gaskets on a AR-15 bolt do surprise many new owners and bolt actions don't have those.

    Unironically 350L or 450BM/458SOCOM
But I'd lean towards 350L for the better ammo weight/capacity.
All three suppress well, have good super options, though it's a bit trickier to find commercial subsonic expanding ammo for 450 and 458.

I'm pretty happy with my 16" 308 Henry "scout rifle". I've since moved to a 1x prism scope which makes the takedown length much shorter because no scope sticking back. Suppressor is in jail.
If you're in the deep woods then 44 Magnum might be better. Or even 45-70. My only concern with those calibers is having the barrel threaded, the walls would be too thin because of the Sporter contour barrel.

Acceptable answer. Personally I don't like damn rifles that break in half (except the FAL and HK which are the closest to God)

Long eye relief scopes suck. Get any lightweight bolt rifle with a shorter barrel and put a can and a normal optic on it.

I like your range neighbor, but your suggestion is not a scout rifle. A scout rifle can be stripper fed and have a detachable magazine, among other attributes.

        Anonymous

A rifle being stripper fed is pointless. My rifle isn't a "scout" rifle and the idea is antiquated.

          >A rifle being stripper fed is pointless
So you don't have one and haven't used one. The SkS is a "pointless" example. I have a few of those, most feed by stripper, my Ms don't, so I can disagree. In fact, except for cartridge, the SkS would make a fine scout rifle. Note to self, new Project.

Given those options and shtf situation, 5.56, stock up on 77gr with an 18" barrel and a good can. That's plenty of killing and you can resupply off anything in NA.

      Anonymous

But anon, you can't take that gun on an African safari or load it from stripper clips. These are very important criteria.

        Anonymous

Why can't you do that with a steyr scout chambered in 5.56? 77gr will load from strippers and can kill medium game.

          Anonymous

Why would you want a steyr scout over a lightweight AR15 when people shooting back at you is a distinct possibility of the scenario?

            Anonymous

Does an AR feed from strippers? We're just talking about the hypothetical that OP posted. I don't care what rifle you use, you're gonna die in a week from dysentery and autism anyway.

In my experience with the 55g 223 I necked a big boar at about 327 yards (maybe a bit more) and went down like a lead. So I calculate that it serves to defend yourself from almost anything and since the banks are sinking the ammunition in cheaper still, I don't know if it reaches the levels of the 7.62x39 and I don't know if that last one works the same way at the same distance.

I went through a scout rifle phase, then I realized I could just buy an ar-10. What do you need the iron sights for on a modern precision rifle? Just get a tactical bolt action or something you fricking sperg.

      Anonymous

      >I went through a scout rifle phase, then I realized I could just buy an ar-10.
This. Even my Cooper's own admission, a semi auto should be considered for use as a scout rifle, and modern lightweight AR-10s fit the bill just right once you look past the exact standards. Take the forward mounted scope, that was to increase eye relief (no scope eye), maintain field of view and allow for easy reloading with stripper clips. You can accomplish the same thing on an AR-10 with the magazines and an LPVO.
      >What do you need the iron sights for on a modern precision rifle?
They're fun and you should still have some form of backup in a scout rifle, since they're supposed to be rugged beyond the life expectancy of a single optic. I would argue the modern scout has an offset red dot the replace the irons.

Fine dingus, here's my recommendation on my own autism
      Get a:
      >Savage Scout in .308
      >ruger gunsight scout also in .308
      >Mossberg MVP Patrol or Scout in 5.56 +
      takes ar mags
those all have decent back up irons
      >Put an LPVO or a 3x optic on it and a good tight sling for doing the boomer sling stabilizing shit
      >don't frick around with a bipod if you intend carrying it around everywhere
You could just go for a "practical rifle" like a ruger american ranch or some other shorter handy bolt action just look around idk see what you like

        >Mossberg MVP Patrol or Scout in 5.56 +
