Hi PrepHole, I haven't been following guns for a while now and I was wanting to purchase a shotgun to protect my home. What would best if I want
>sub $500
>good quality brand and goes bang when I pull the trigger every time
>short to medium length barrel (18.5 to 22 i guess)
>pump action
>not a sporting/hunting rifle, holds at least 5 shells
>12 gague
>ability to add a picatinny rail flashlight
Is the Maverick 88 still a solid shotgun? I was thinking of going with the 20" barrel and 7+1 configuration.
Mossberg and Remington are notorious for QC issues— when it comes to shotguns, remember the three B's
>Browning
>Beretta
>Benelli
QC issues ? On a 590a1 Moss ?
No, there isn't.
What are the QC issues on a Remington? Even the Versa Maxx?
Mostly finish/rust issues.
That sounds like poor maintenance? My versa max has no finish issues. Zero rust either.
shitty spray-on finishes, defective ejectors and burrs in the chamber on freedom group 870s are not simply maintenance issues. 770 series were even worse.
I have a Versa max and its been fine. No QC issues so far.
870-fag here, they had QC issues during the mid to late 2000's and early to mid 2010's but from everything I've heard they're not as bad anymore. Not quite the same as a pre-freedom group remington but it'll work
>mid to late 2000's and early to mid 2010's
2007 to 2019 when they went out of business and died.
they never fixed anything it just kept getting worse.
current rem under new ownership is too new to judge. people say they are okay but thats something that takes time to judge. if its trash straight from the factory thats easy but if its hey 2-5 years from now parts fail cause they didnt do something right well it hasnt been 2 years. or management makes stupid cost cutting calls and fucks it again. the track records not there.
Basically it might rust a bit.
>Benelli
that's italian. you can go pump, or auto
Might close early today
WTC a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range?
Gay opinion, many such cases with spaghetti fags in the shotgun world. OP just get a Mossberg if you want a pump shotgun
Mossberg 500 Thunder Ranch model. The breacher looks cool and can be used as a standoff device. The later models have a gay camo furniture but just paint it straight. Or a Mossberg Shockwave and SBS it. For home defense, or just being a guy that only wants one gun, the real redpill is getting a handgun. 9mm is fine at home defense ranges, handguns are infinitely easier to clear indoors with, and you can conceal it if you ever feel you need protection outside of the home.
Mossberg has always been g2g for affordable shotguns. Remington has had many qc issues recently. Everything you said to get is expensive as shit and won't serve a casual gun owner any better than the affordable options.
Make sure to study the layout of your house. A shotgun might not be the best choice.
>Is the Maverick 88 still a solid shotgun?
Yeah but I stopped recommending it after they started getting cheap on construction, these days I say just spend the extra hundo and get a 500. Don't cheap out on stuff that you plan to rely on.
>extra hundred for a miss 500
Most of them hover around 600 after taxes and fees, while you can fond Mav 88 sub 200 all the time.
just buy used most people barely ever shoot
you can get a almost new 590 for like $350.
Americans only ever buy new because they're used to everything breaking, that's why there's so many guns in America. We just throw the broken ones in the trash or back of the closet then go buy new ones.
I've seen videos of shotguns just going off. I'm not talking about an ND where the person actually pulled the trigger then claimed "it just went off" - I'm talking about it just fucking going off.
Am I right to not want to keep a round in the chamber?
Most shotguns are not drop safe. If the sear surfaces are worn out, had bad QC from the factory, or if bubba's been playing around trying to lighten the trigger it's possible for very little to set it off.
Keeping it in cruiser ready keeps that from being an issue. Or just, you know, not buying pre-owned beat to shit shotguns
ive only heard good things about them and have been tempted to get one for myself
>Is the Maverick 88 still a solid shotgun?
its fine but if you can swing the extra for a 500 get a 500 instead
Yeah it's a solid choice
>Is the Maverick 88 still a solid shotgun? I was thinking of going with the 20" barrel and 7+1 configuration.
Yes. Maverick is an excellent choice.
Anyone know anything about the Winchester SXP?
The SXP is just a roach version of the 120/1200/1300. Literally buy a used 120/1200/1300 for $150-250 and come out ahead with a better gun. Which is saying something, considering they're already budget guns. The entire line was meant to reduce costs to the point of absolute bare minimum without it being a pipe bomb. Do you really want the final cost cutting measure they could take?
1200 and 1300 are better than 120 imo. You'll find tons of people online praising them a lot until today. They've been issued to some cops before 870 era, and even served a bit in 'Nam. I would be surprised if they were complete junk.
Maverick 88 all ya need sunny. A 590 is a good upgrade from it with the easily changeable foreend and the 18.5"/20" versions are +1 compared to the 88/500 series.
All these mossburger poors only remind me of how the hobby was better with less poors. Just as good was bad enough, but now people openly tote that the poor junk is better. Mossbergs were considered hunks of rattly junk for eons and they will always be such. Anyone unwilling to save for an extra month to get a good gun deserves them; it's a badge that shows how little impulse control you have.
You can fix the rattle with a fagpul or other aftermarket pump. I got a shotgun because I wanted an extra gun to keep under the couch. I shoot it from time to time but ultimately it doesn't really serve a purpose other than to have fun with sometimes. I don't rely solely on it, but if I had to I'd trust it. We're not talking about fucking Turkshit shotguns here, Mossbergs are fine and have always been fine. Even their cheapest model the 88 is a decent budget shotty. I've never heard someone bitch about them as much as you shitting up this thread with your boomerisms.
>ya have ta spend $1500 on an EYE-TALYAN shotgun boi, muh 3 B's!
Don't respond to trolls, do the needful sir
I recommend saving a little extra and going for a 590/590A1
590 doesn't even have the metal trigger group. Waste of money.
Also anyone know if they sell said groups separately?
