pistol crossbows are a noob trap. get them a low draw-weight bow from a reputable company.

Stop consooming product for birthday. This is a shitty habit that for some reason no one has a problem with.

Carve him a flute or something and put his initials on it. I guarantee he will treasure it way more than any product you could consoom.

      what are you, a satyr?

I dunno dude. That's just an example of something that could easily be done. Also a simple 4 hole flute is probably the easiest instrument of all time. And can be taken anywhere.

Why are you so defensive you little cloven hoofed coomer?

why is making something yourself better than buying something with money you earned doing work? hell in the time it takes to properly carve out a not-shit flute you probably could have just earned enough money to buy a proper flute.

          >a flute that can play all of 5 notes
What the frick are you going to do with that? I'm honestly curious.

pull it out awkwardly at school or at the bus stop to try and get attention but then get shy because you're a beta

Absolutely nothing. It's literally a funko pop tier gift in that its going straight in some box somewhere never to be looked at again.
The "consoom" meme has lost all meaning, it used to be making fun of people who clog their houses with plastic merch that essentially just sits there and does nothing, now people just seem to consider buying literally anything "consooming", even if its a bow that would have obvious function as something you could use as part of a hobby.

Folk music that uses a pentatonic scale and only uses one octave?

Blowing a bit harder can bump many simple wind instruments into the next octave. So you can actually play a lot of stuff as long as it's in the same key (or by playing it higher or lower).
It's still up to you to find the tactical advantage of this of course.

Crossbow prices shot up during the 'rona and haven't come down. More or less any frick-around tier bow will perform about the same, and your brother will be practising a while before anything like lethal proficiency. Don't worry too much about it.

            >outing yourself as musically moronic
You can play 12 notes (chromatically) using half holds and different fingerings.

Most of the time people buy gifts because they can't make something the other party would want. If someone gave me a flute I'd probably just shove it in the attic because I have no desire to play the flute.
OP probably wants to get his brother a bow because he's interested in archery.

It’s funny someone mentioned a flute because he wants to get back into the sax so we’re getting his one cleaned and refurbished as part of his gift. The bow just seems useful and masculine enough to be a good present for a 25 year old man who doesn’t really make a fuss about owning a lot of things.
A real bow would be pretty cool I’m just very tempted by the cool factor of a little pistol crossbow even if they are a bit gimmicky. Some are going with good reviews for about $200 at 80lb draw weight. Would that be any good?

      >80lb draw weight

try 50. giving someone a heavy draw bow as their first bow is like starting someone out on a mosin,

Even 50 pounds would be heavy for a starter bow from what I've heard.

Pistol crossbows are fun toys, even dangerous ones, but not reliable weapons.

Get your brother a 25lb or maybe 30lb weight recurve bow. He needs to learn his draw, release, and follow through first, or else he's going to develop really bad habits with heavier-weight bows. I remember shooting a 25lb bow for about 3 years before moving on to a 40lb
