I'm telling you I'd prefer a semiautomatic rifle in .30-06 or similar. A shotgun with 3 in the tube+1 in the chamber would probably kill the bear but with my shot placement, not fast enough to stop it from ripping me to shreds before bleeding out.

maybe if you empty 10+ rounds with proper placement on it, but it might not stop it in time for it to do damage to you. It'll die, but how fast is going to be the important part.
Hollowpoint is terrible against bears. Their hide is too tough and you don't get any penetration.

How different are polar bear skulls compared to other dangerous bear species? I've always thought of the main danger of polar bears v. grizzlies is that the former doesn't have any fear of humans, just sees them as food, not that they're particularly durable.

IIRC polar bear skulls have a slightly steeper angle than grizzly skulls so there is a remote possibility that a small bullet will glance off if the angle is just right, or wrong in this case. But they aren't bulletproof by any means

Two actual polar bear trackers I know of near hudson bay carry a 1911 in .45 and a rem 870 or mossberg 590 with the marine coating.

The FM barrel uses the same thread pitch as the AR10. So be sure to drill out the muzzle device to accommodate the larger round. I just have an A2 birdcage on mine.
One thing to note, if you're using a muzzle device, make sure it has a half-inch passage through it. I had to drill mine out.
ah good point. I do have some 16x1mm brakes for USP in .460 Rowland that might work for a .45 ACP barrel, maybe, if I thread it for that.
