My boss asked me to look into the creation of a videocabinet (an enclosed space where patrons can browse porn and fap in peace).
Premade kits are expensive as hell so I wanted to make one with some arcade buttons and a custom videoplayer setup (genre select, next movie, previous movie, random movie).
Does anyone have a good guide on how you need to get the buttons working in Linux or Android, would it simply just be like a regular controller and mapping them in the software like a keypress?
Never delved much into arcade stuff before so I'm not sure where to look.

We actually make more of a margin on the adult cinema than we do selling toys (except maybe dvd's becauase those margins are huge).

Yes. Cheapest is an arduino nano (clone) that you set up as USB HID. It’s really easy, only takes a tiny bit of programming and then works on any platform. There are many examples out there if you search for ‘arduino hid keyboard example’ The nano gives you 12 inputs, the more expensive models can probably do more.

What you're looking for is a "keyboard encoder" , the I-PAC is a fairly good one; software for programming it is windows only, but it'll save the config onto the I-Pac.

Off the top of my head, OSMC or something else using kodi and a cheap arcade USB board. You can hook up what little buttons you need.

Easiest thing? Get a bunch of cheap mice and extend the button switches. Voila: USB clicks for near zero effort at low cost.

Easiest way to make this would be to get an arcade controller board off of Aliexpress along with some buttons. The controller then goes to a pc where you can custom map all the buttons to do shit, which would also be used to play the media.

To add to this, you could probably load the videos up into some video playlist software, set up a bunch of playlists based on genre, make a menu button two arrow buttons for up and down, select button, fast forward, rewind, next in queue, and previous button. Host all of the videos on a central server, that way if you have multiple booths you can just upload it once. Make the PCs in the fap cubes be some sort of fanless mini pc with SSDs so they're relatively maintenance free. Also, make the fapcube seat out of fiberglass and pleather so you can just hose that shit down.
I might just make them standing cabines actually.
Put a black shower curtain to close it off, some kind of plastic flooring to easily hose off.
I'll make a latch on the section of the screen with an eyescrew (that I'd lock with a padlock) and some hinges so I can perform easy maintenance when it's needed.
Cover the hole the screen is in with a thick plexiglass slab, drill it into the wood and seal the holes with epoxy (might make a plexiglass cover for the buttons as well actually).
The way I wanted to do the videos was to put a raspberry pi in with a Debian Linux install and set up some keyboard shortcuts to run command line entries through the buttons.
I would indeed run all the videos from a central server that has an nvme ssd.
You can command mpv to just open a folder so I could add new stuff daily to it without too much work.
I just wish raspberry's weren't that expensive right now.
Def make standing cabinets as that coerces customer turnover vs. camping out. Copy the live show viewing booths for layout.
I would think the only damage you have to worry about is glory holes being carved into the sides. Every porn shop I've ever been in had them.
We're adding the glory holes anyway, put a rubber ring to cover the sharp bits from cutting out the hole.
Might put a privacy screen over it so people can lock it off with a hook if they're not into that.
That's a good idea, never thought about people camping out if you have a seated area.
We have a store section on the entrance floor that sells pretty much anything someone could want.

Dear OP, I am your future self. The booth you are about to construct can also travel through time. You don't know this yet but you really, really, really, really, really, REALLY wish you had installed a flat stain-resistant touch screen instead of recessing analog buttons.
I was actually considering making Android tablets with a kiosk setting but I wasnt sure how I could play a random video from a folder on Android.
Future you here again. Shuffle mode on a video play list is a completely solved problem. Moreso than scraping residue out of analog buttons.
