Demonstrated what? That a phalanx that don't lower its front spears horizontally against advancing infantry gets what it deserves for not grasping the primary intention of their weapons and unit type?

        Anonymous

Absolutely not what happened. Actually the romans were pretty fricked until they managed to flank the sarissa phalanx. Greeks were giving them hell. Spears are amazing but if a swordman manages to flank you or get close, it's all lost.

          Anonymous

So basically the artist got it wrong? Because that drawing show a frontal assault not a flank one.

            Anonymous

It was both, actually. The Greek (macedonian, but Greek is faster to type) army was marching along the top of the hill while the Roman army was marching along it's foot. Then the fog cleared and both armies spotted each other and formed up for battle. It's a head on pushing battle. The Roman right pushed backed the Greek left (uphill, no less) while the Greek Right pushed back the Roman Left. Then some Roman lieutenant (tribune) on the Roman right looks left, realizes the Greek right is wide open, and leads a charge right into it.

It was also a pitched battle neither side had prep for. Ambushes were common and you usually spent a couple hours before a set piece battle setting up formations but this encounter surprised both sides and they both just went for it.

I think he did some theory stuff for DnD, in relation to combat mechanics and ranges or areas of control.
I think that actually was taken quite well.
But both he and Skallagrim and all the tatami mat cutting armchair theorists with strong opinions tend to be a bit shit at grasping practical fighting, because they've never actually fought.
Shad's beginning to get over mount stupid though, but the breakthrough in realizing HEMA doesn't give much more realistic a grasp on foightin' as Ole fencing does, seems to have yet eluded him.

Skallagrim is an avid HEMA practitioner so that puts him above you, and many other people.
Reenactment is just LARP compared to HEMA, which tries to simulate a duel to the death while reenacment is just playing a determined battle where you aren't even allowed to do certain strikes or used properly weighted equipment.

        You dumb gorilla Black person.

HEMA can give you a really good approximation of sword fighting as concerns the fencing part, i.e. trying to hit the guy without getting hit yourself. What happens after the hit is much harder. You don't really know how good your hit was, you don't know exactly what you hit (would have hit if not for protective gear), how the opponent would react. Scholagladitatoria has a few videos where he cites historical sources and it's all over the place - from people who drop dead after a single blow, to people who keep fighting after several ones. It only gets more complicated in a group setting.
Still, getting the fencing part right and having basic info on where you should hit the other guy is pretty good already.
Where HEMA has problems is everything you cannot approximate in training - stuff like polearms and armored fighting, which you simply cannot do in a safe way. IMO a modern unarmored swordsman would be fully the equal of a medieval swordsman who spent similar amounts of time training, but a modern man trying to fight with halberd or poleaxe, perhaps even in armor, would have some nasty surprises waiting for him.

  11. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

the fact is polearms have a much higher skill ceiling than swords and therefore the most skilled polearm wielder beats the most skilled sword wielder.

Careful with those slurs, buddy. You might not be that bright either. A spear for use in a phalanx is heavy and if you waver, you could mess it up for others. It's up to eight feet long and four pounds heavy, and you wield it with just one hand while the other hold the shield. Maybe you should read a book too.

Duels were illegal for all but a select few circumstances even back into the renaissance and sword duels persisted into the 1960s in France. You’re both moronic and don’t know what you’re talking about.

Ok? Swords being carried inside of towns was illegal for most everyone everywhere since the Middle Ages (even though we know people still did since edicts against carrying weapons were orally issued over and over again.) the point is People still absolutely dueled to first blood well into the 20th century though, even knowing that dueling was illegal. Are you being willfully moronic? Why are insistent on talking about things you know nothing about.

This video is from France, but Italy also especially saw a resurgence in saber dueling during the fascist era. Benito Mussolini himself was pictured with a dueling saber and was an avid fencer.

literally nobody cares about the the microcosms that still played around with swords. They are the exception that are not representative of how duels were being conducted in the 19th century. By the time duels were being outlawed wholesale around the world, firearms had already taken over. Stop being moronic.

                Anonymous

But that’s literally not true. Europe maintained a strong fencing tradition that included dueling well into the 20th century. They fought with both swords and pistols. It’s only in America that pistol dueling entirely took over. I actually at one point made an effort to find sword duels recorded in America and the only one I could find involved Lincoln and didn’t even end up happening.

Also duels we’re outlawed nearly everywhere even in the renaissance. For almost its entire history it was a socially acceptable but illegal practice. You literally don’t know what you’re talking about.

Also nadi, multiple time Olympic gold medalist in all three weapon divisions of fencing fought a duel against a sports journalist in fricking 1924. They were still doing it then, too.

                >but that’s a microcosm
If you say so, but I can tell you I don’t know of many pistol duels that happened in that time period so it sounds like sword dueling outlived it.

Emmy understanding is that generally walking around with swords culturally meant “looking for trouble” in most places even if there wasn’t exact laws forbidding it. I’d compare it to walking around Walmart with an AR today.

I've dueled to fricking first blood in the 21st century.

Won by deliberately swinging my half-broken staff into a block as hard as possible as a feint so I could stab under my opponent's guard when my weapon broke (weirdly on topic).

Caught em in the hand with the splintered end when they were forced to try and catch the thrust.

Was quite fun. I'll take that shit over a "light contact" sparring match where nobody bleeds but I'll short kicks with my shins so many fricking times somebody ends up with a limp by the end of it.

Well. Swords were easier to carry at that point because a) technology hand allowed it but also because b) the sword had become the civilian gentleman's weapon. They trained for single combat, not line or cavalry. The military retained mainly heavy swords right up to the flintlock period.

I like sandrhoman but his most recent (I think) video about cannons being irrelevant until some arbitrarily recent period was bizarre

          Anonymous

          Why?
The video exposed that in the 16th and even 17th centuries, gunpowder artillery was very difficult to procure in meaningful numbers. This doesn't mean that it was irrelevant, just that armies needed a huge effort just to mass a few dozen artillery guns and thus artillery wasn't a decisive factor in war until the 30 years war, thanks to Gustavus Adolphus emphazising the importance of artillery in field battles.

            Anonymous

because cannons started providing a pivotal role in the support of sieges long before that period, such as in the south of spain

              Anonymous

How many cannons were brought to those sieges?
The argument in the video is not that artillery was irrelevant, just that it wasn't the decisive factor due to the difficulty of massing artillery. At the start of the 17th century, the king of France couldn't put together even 50 guns for a siege spanning over a year.

                Anonymous

when historians agree that cannons made a huge difference, what does it matter how many were massed? even one cannon brought to bare, especially against castles not designed with large cannons in mind so running directly counter to the idea that cannons only became a determinate factor in later periods, could expediate a siege by months if not years

                Anonymous

The video does mention that cannons had a spur of popularity in the second half of the 15th century since they were facing medieval structures that couldn't cope with artillery, but actually decreased in importance in the 16th century when modern fortifications started being built.
In sieges throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, cannons were mostly used to shell the city beyond the fortifications, since shooting at the walls only resulted in minor damage. Mining and sapping were much more effective at actually tearing down modern walls.
Sieges were won by starving the population, undermining the walls and carrying out sorties to attack the ramparts. Artillery didn't just win sieges outright and it certainly didn't make any of those techniques obsolete.
And that's sieges. In field battles artillery was even harder to come by. It would be rare for an army consisting of thousands upon thousands of men to have even a dozen guns. That is, until Gustavus Adolphus introduced regimental guns. Again, guns weren't useless but they didn't win battles, and the video mentions that their function was mostly breaking the enemy formation and forcing them to attack you.

"why did you make such a thing?"
"well, the previous castle got a hole blown through it"
you get my gist. even in the absence of early era overmatch, if you're designing things in a way that is much costlier with a specific capability in mind, i think it's fair to say it is of primary relevance. it would be someone spent half their military budget on air defence and managing to keep an enemy airforce at bay. air power still defined a large part of that situation without having actually achieved tactical success.

Artillery "was so irrelevant " that it brought to life the entire new type of fortifications in the early 16th century.

Aslo artillery became the answer to English tactics of setting up fortified camp and camping there during field battles

No one ever claimed that artillery was irrelevant, you are arguing against a strawman. The argument is that in the 16th and 17th centuries, aside from some exceptions like the Swedish army in the 30 years war, militaries just couldn't mass enough guns for artillery to be the decisive element of warfare. It's only in the 18th century that massed artillery becomes feasible. Armies in the 16 and 17th centuries wanted more guns but they just couldn't get them because they weren't available.
Are you mentally capable of grasping the difference between claiming that something is useless on abstract and claiming that the particular use of said thing was ineffective at a given time?
A few cannons were capable of breaking medieval walls. Thus the people start building modern fortifications, and now a few cannons simply don't cut it anymore. Then armies want more cannons but they just can't get them because the supply chain is a mess. Therefore they can't rely on artillery alone to win sieges, at least until a century later in which mass production of artillery becomes a thing and people consequently stop bothering with conventional fortifications. It's not that complicated to understand.

i watched the video when it was posted and haven't thought about it till i saw the name come up again. i admit on rewatch he did cover this stuff in passing. the fact that he continually emphasized the cases where cannons were undersupply or didn't reach the front in time just slants the presentation. it's true it was a problem, but if you choose to focus only on that problem it becomes impossible to make sense of a world where people would bother making the herculean logistical efforts necessary (after all, the battle's always over before the guns matter anyway, right? might as well just focus on the other things instead), or the evolution of fortifications (what do you need them for? that's a whole lot of investment to counter a system that doesn't come into relevance until you've either broken the siege or starved because they never show up). i don't have an issue with what you're saying, but if you paint a picture of 200 years of warfare where cannons redefined the entire battlefield and just say "for 200 years they just got stuck in the mud every time then suddenly started mattering again" of course that sends the opposite message to reality

                >couldn't mass enough guns for artillery to be the decisive element of warfare.
but artillery WAS decisive element of warfare.
It made medieval castle completly irrelevant. (That btw promoted rise of absolutist power of the kings, unified France and it's absolute monarchy were built on artillery that can crash any vassal castle and resistance).
Artillery made irrelevant wagenburg tactic that was totally OP in the early days of gunpowder.
Artillery defeated English camping with longbowmen tactics. And won Hundreds years war for France.
Artillery created Bastion Fort, that was at the same time counter to siege artillery and implementation of artillery for defense. And this implementation was so strong that created new positional warfare crisis, turning war into stalemate and series of prolonged "starve them out" sieges were this new type of fortification was implemented.
Artillery broke the walls of the Final Roman Empire in Constantinople and created Ottoman Empire.

Without artillery face of warfare would be completely different. And even political face of the Europe would be different as absolute monarches would not be proped. And Romans still would be living in Constantinople.

Haven't seen the video, but as long as he's specifying the late arrival of artillery to field battles, he's correct. Cannons were revolutionary siege engines, which (together with the rise of the modern, centralized nation-state) led to the end of the castle and the rise of the star fort. But it took a few hundred years before they were common enough--or flexible enough--to become a decisive arm on the battlefield.

NTA and I haven't seen any wokeness in his Roman shit but in his congress of Vienna video he goes into a big rant about how the opportunity to end slavery at the congress wasn't taken seriously and it has definite shades of wokeness. Honestly, I find his anti-Caesar bias far more egregious. I don't see how its reasonable to blame Caesar for destroying the Roman Republic when Marius and Sulla had already completely hollowed it out, and Pompey and Crassus pissed on its ashes. Besides it is directly Cato the Younger's fault that Caesar crossed the Rubicon at all.

The fact that this fat piggy is rich from yt revenue and has a family with money to spare to play knight like a manchild, while i'm 29 and unemployed and alone, makes me so mad. Maybe it'll give me the right kick to finally kill myself, i've been trying to overcome the fear of death for years

to be fair, its probably not so much youtube revenue, as it is sponsors. RPM for historical weapons creators in Aus is about 2-3AUD per thousand views. So even his million view videos only net him like 2-3k AUD

You are not in the right place to find sympathy, moron. Fight for what you want or have a nice day, but take your rèddit 'WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE FEEL BAD FOR ME' horseshit elsewhere. Nobody here is your therapist.

I swear public building authorities are the greatest stick in the wheel of civilization. Countless men have attempted to build great things on law they own, only for a nameless bureaucrat who has nothing to fricking do with their life to tell them that they can't do it.
The housing crisis in Western cities is quite literally the result of housing authorities preventing developers from building large numbers of residential units because "muh small neighborhood feel".

He's got a plot of land on which he hopes to build 2-3 small keeps to different architectural standards, so he at least seems to think he can get the permitting through some day.

They won't be accurate though. Not in terms of construction. It'll all be facades and fake rock over conventional building methods

The fact that spears were used while swords existed is enough to prove their effectiveness.

Lots of weapons were used at the same time. Bayonets exist to turn guns into shitty short spears, combat knifes are basically modern daggers.

Because its stupid. Spending time to destroy a spear haft (which is very durable in itself) rather than parrying it and reaching for the wielder is a good way to get you killed.

This also doesn't take into account people who fricking protect their spearshafts like the Japanese and the Chinese who either wrap them in hide or reinforce the last 1 foot of their hafts with metal bars/collars.

God I hate shad so much. A fat buttery sack of shit who doesn’t know shit is given an audience an declared an authority on historical weaponry.

I remember when this fricking homosexual fought a couple HEMA newbies, edited it so it looked like he won every bout, then said he invented a move that doesn’t exist in HEMA that was just a fricking slip. I genuinely want to beat this motherfrickers head in with a feder.
