Yup, it's literally just a bell 407. They threw a fancy radar on the front and some good radios to feed that info back to the ship for surveillance or to relay targeting information.

    15 hour endurance as well.

No make, no model, no link, nobody knows what OP is talking about except the other people in his sekrit club.

      MQ-8C

      I think they're complimentary, not about new/old.

Kinda but not really, the MQ-8B is fine, but it has no advantage over the MQ-8C except for its size, but most naval hangers have room for a Bell 407 sized helicopter, so they don't usually NEED the space savings provided by the MQ-8B.

The MQ-8B has about half the endurance and is about 50km/h slower.

        Can't you fit 2 MQ-Bs in a hangar though?

          Anonymous

Depends on the boat, but on the LCS ships, yeah it's either 2x MQ-8B or 1x MQ-8C.

I thought the point of MQ8B was that it was small enough so that it could fit without having to take up hanger space that your choppers would be using.

MQ-8C is already small compared to most naval helicopters
CH-53E and SH-60/MH-60 are massive in comparison to the MQ-8C.

checking up on it it seems their intent is to eventually switch to the C fully, which makes sense with the points they're making like the much better endurance and sensor suite

Why would you need to know? If you're unable to identify it either from memory or cursory google searches, then any insight you could offer to the thread would be worthless. By your own admission its an effective filter.

I almost posted "How come other nations aren't bothering with full-size unmanned helicopters" but then actually bothered googling the thing I would post before making an ass of myself.
Seems like the only other one that is a real thing is the Airbus(Eurocopter) one.
I suppose most militaries don't see the benefit and prefer to just go for the smaller heli-drones instead.

The US can afford to develop these systems for their navy. Other countries will likely start adopting similar systems soon if they haven't already, but they're not going to be the early adopter like the US tends to be.

Yeah it seems like the euro one is only just beginning trials on French ships.
And it being made by Airbus explains a lot, since they were basically formed from the smaller euro companies that wanted to compete with US aircraft industry.

You can remove some safety features, furniture, etc, strip it down to the bare minimum needed.

Also with 15-hour endurance, you can't really expect a human pilot to do that kind of mission with any regularity.

Exactly what is its purpose? The Shadow/Grey Eagle/Reaper can do this shit just as well.

I fly Shadows and it can maintain a 600m loiter for 8 hours.

MQ-8C can do 20,000 feet for 15 hours.

Also vertical takeoff/landing cause it's used on the LCS ships and slated for use on the new Constellation-class frigates.

RQ-7 Shadow, MQ-1C Gray Eagle, and MQ-9 Reaper are all drones that require runways (either for just landing or both takeoff and landings)

RQ-7 could be catapult launched from the flight deck of the LCS ships or the Constellation-class but you'd never be able to recover an RQ-7 from either of those ships. Simply not enough room to land one.
