Russia brought out tanks from the 60’s and conquered Soledar. Bringing our older equipment = more success.

Except there no evidence whatsoever that the Russians effectively used tanks there or anywhere else in the country.

Heavily modernized. Their purpose is to free up better tanks from quiet sectors.
    >Right now there is Ukrainian armor and crews sitting around Kiev and Kharkov and Kherson staring at empty fields

      >staring at empty fields
      It’s called being in reserve
You see first world armies tend to hold armoured forces in the rear so that when breakthrough opportunities present themselves they can be quickly marshalled into exploitation actions.
Third world militaries like puccia seem to have a different mindset…

there are hundreds of Leopard 2 in NATO countries that aren't Germany, but nobody has requested German permission to deliver them yet
it's just the usual screeching at Germany while Germany already is one of the main donors to Ukraine

Wrong. Germany refused to allow Spain to send Leopard 2A4s to Ukraine. And they've also vetoed several other proposed hardware shipments from third party countries.

fake news, the tanks were in too bad condition to be delivered, Spain never made a formal request.

Modernized and uses standard 105mm NATO ammo. Lighter tanks like this can still be very useful for direct fire support if used with proper combined arms tactics, which Ukraine has repeatedly proven it can do and is continuously improving upon.

The reason the T-62s that the Russians are digging out of the rust heap are bad is because they aren't properly modernized and the Russians are too stupid to use them in a tactically correct way.

Like if Greece or other countries gave Ukraine a bunch of upgraded Leopard 1s, M60s, and M48s, those would still be very useful.

They're perfectly capable of providing direct fire, and the ones actually in use have heavily modernized targeting systems and sensors. You're not going to send it in against MBTs, but that's not the only thing tanks are used for.

          >big gun that can move around
Pretty sure the old soviet doctrine was to have tanks attached to infantry brigades to do just that.

            Anonymous

And yet they aren't doing that at all. They send tanks out on their own or in pairs, with no infantry screens or mechanized support, and get wiped out.

Greece are the biggest israelites in this conflict, and yes, even bigger then Ukraine itself.
Sure, Ukraine's been asking for gibs left and right, but they don't look at gifted horse in the mouth. Greeks meanwhile have always tried to 1:1 their outdated Soviet crap for much superior shit in return (and krauts of course bit the bullet with the Marders for BMP-1's deal). At that rate the greeks would probably ask 2A7+'s in exchange for Leo 1's

Are these gimped out T-55 variants actually worse than the T-72s Russia is fielding now? Wasn't there a thread a couple days ago about a train full of base model T-72s on their way to the front without any ERA or visible upgrades?

    >M-55S - T-55 modernization developed by the STO RAVNE company and engineers of the Israeli company Elbit. Slovenia modernized 30 T-55 tanks in the inventory of its armed forces. The last T-55 was modernized to the M-55S standard in May 1999. The original 100mm tank gun was replaced by the NATO-standard 105mm one with a thermal sleeve. The armour protection of the tank was improved considerably by attaching Rafael ERA blocks to the hull and the turret. A digital ballistic computer was installed in order to improve the fire control system (FCS). The gunner has the Fotona SGS-55 two-axis stabilized day-and-night sight with an integral laser rangefinder. In addition to the integral optic sight the commander has the Fotona COMTOS-55 sight with an independent line-of-sight stabilization, which allows him to acquire targets and lay the gun independently if required. The driver has the Fotona CODRIS combined day/night observation periscope. The LIRD-1A laser illumination warning receiver was mated with front-mounted IS-6 smoke grenade launchers (of which there are six in two clusters, one per side of the turret) and can be automatically activated in an emergency. Modernization of the V-12 diesel engine resulted in an increase in power from 520hp to 600hp. The running gear has rubber side skirts and the tank was outfitted with new rubber and metal tracks. Improvements were also made to the communications aids.[42] In October 2022, Slovenia gave 28 M-55S to Ukraine; Germany provides 40 transport vehicles to Slovenia, as Prime Minister Robert Golob and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arranged some weeks ago. The vehicles will also serve for protection and rescue.[184]

Just give them Shermans already, then Russians can deploy their T-34s and we can finally settle the issue of who's tank is better.

      It doesn't have thermals.

I thought the thermals was the reason this M-55S is supposed to be better than Russia's T-72s that generally does not have thermals outside of a few modern modifications.

If it's not an improvement in terms of optics, and it's armed with a gun the first models of T-72 were designed to defeat, let alone the T-72B with improved armour and Kontakt-5, then really what is the M-55S actually offering over a T-62M?

T-62Ms were in the process of being renovated to be handed over to Syria before this war broke out, it's a happy coincidence that T-62Ms were already being made operational. If they weren't doing that, they likely wouldn't have bothered pulling them out of storage when they've got a lot of T-80s in storage.

is ukraine the second army of the world?

beggars can't be choosers. outdated AFVs are better than no AFVs.

So really it's not an operational critique of fielding T-62Ms, the logic matches that of bothering to field T-55s (that is, if you have them you might as well use them), but rather this is a criticism of aesthetics? Russia shouldn't have used the T-62Ms because they're the "2nd army of the world" (although no one comes anywhere close to the expenditure of the 1st army of the world) and they're a regional power in a region of the world that's hardly rich compared to North America or Western Europe.

Russia should therefore be like the US Military, they should fight exclusively in T-14 Armatas, that's the latest and greatest and they should have a trillion dollar budget every year for the military to pay for them. They're literally morons to have spent any less than the US on war in peacetime.
