I don't think so. On the other hand they don't start losing damage until at 70% condition and between weapon repair kits and jury rigging keeping things repaired is easier.

No, it isn’t. They cut it and someone had to texture and animate it.
Then they charged you 7 bucks or whatever to get it in “creation club” content. Charging people to use a gun that’s already in the files for the game.

Apparently it was modeled but was cut before release. The model still exists in game.
              https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Chinese_assault_rifle_(Fallout_4)
Why did they not include it?
Because they are moronic. It’s that simple.
Then they add the real Russian AK in Nuka World…and call it a “handmade rifle” and give it NO connection to Russia.

They are idiots. It’s that simple.

said and called it “Soviet Assault Rifle” or “Russian Assault Rifle” if they were worried about it.
The “Service Rifle” from New Vegas is an AR-15, are they getting sued by Colt?

To be fair, having Chinese guns on the East Coast doesn't make sense. Too far. Maybe a few as war trophies from Alaska but it would be a collector's item and too rare to maintain.

Who’s to say Chinese weren’t infiltrating one of the tech capitals of the USA? I imagine the Chinese had a lot of cells all over the United States. Wasn’t there a Slocum Joes that was a front for Chinese infiltrators or something?

What is yr picrel, is it a doom mod?

It technically is a doom mod since it’s built in gzdoom.
I think the project is dead though or on permanent hiatus, New Blood hired the guy to work on their unnamed Retrofuturistic CRPG which is basically Fallout where the nukes don’t drop. Looks really cool actually and a great way to rip it off in an exciting way. Has turn based first person combat and isometric (cavalier oblique projection) map traversal.

According to the devs, they intentionally went over the top with .45 based on tall tales.

Acebuckeye13: "The Devs in New Vegas actually tried to balance weapons based on the power of their real-world calibers, which is why they buffed 10mm, added 9mm as a replacement low-tier ammo, and got rid of .32 entirely (Because it was completely ludicrous)."
rope kid (Joshua Sawyer): "The exception to this was .45 Auto (ACP). To make it appealing as a mid-tier semi-auto caliber between 10mm and 12.7mm with a 7 round magazine, I had to give it TRUE TALES OF THE 1911 stats.
I still feel slightly bad about it, but people like Last Man Standing-style .45s that throw guys 20' through the air, so..."'
                [...]
                From https://archive.is/4QbeR

In general, I prefer to give weapons functional names and avoid getting wrapped up in specific designations used by manufacturers or the military. Because our weapons must, for technical reasons, occasionally differ functionally from the weapons upon which they are based (different caliber, charging handle placement, receiver height, stock shape/length, etc.) giving them a more utilitarian name helps negate some of the potential pedantry over those deviations.

There are no AR-15s, Colt Commandos, Browning Hi-Powers, BFRs, M1 Garands, Winchester 1886s, 1887s, or 1892s in Fallout: New Vegas -- just Service Rifles, Assault Carbines, 9mm Pistols, Hunting Revolvers, This Machine, Brush Guns, Lever-Action Shotguns, and Cowboy Repeaters.

That's also why there are no M1911s or Thompsons in Honest Hearts, but you'll find plenty of .45 Auto Pistols and .45 Auto Submachine Guns.

Yeah I’m totally fine with this naming convention in Fallout. If they want to give it an official designation that can stamp it on the side as a fun little world building thing.
For example, the hunting rifle in Fallout and Fallout 2 was fictional civilian semi auto sporting rifle called the Colt Rangemaster (they had balls for that one) but I don’t think you’d know that unless you opened up the manual or description.

Wow, Bethesda must be big-brain to be that convincing

OK, here's the thing you're not getting.

that was their art direction. Now I have worked in the art departments of videogames titles, and worked as a weapons modeller, though I was mostly environment art, and yes, I have worked in art direction, though obviously not for anything of the scale of Bethdesa. though I have worked for bigger companies as one of the peons.

the art director for the product sets the tone, there's a document - or multiple documents - called an Art Bible. now I expect FO4's art bible was very different to that of FO3, which was most likely built on reference using art assets from Fallout 1 and 2 as a source, as that's what their inspiration was, taking FO2's setting into the 3d worlds.
With FO4, its clear that there is a change of direction. Like it or not, (and, by the way, I dont like much of it either.), there is the intentional choice to go for what you described as Jetsons post-apoc. Bubble canopy vehicles, flying wings instead of the F80 shooting star style aircraft, more of the 50's style art etc. That is intentional. you create a design document which is used as the reference point for the artwork for each element, and that's handed off to conceptual designers.

Regardless of if you like it, its not "hurr idiot artists dont know what they're doing" bullshit that you lot are saying. they knew fine well what style they were aiming for. weapon designs will have gone through multiple iterations, as concept art, where they're produced by a team, and signed off by the director. This is a deliberate design choice.

Now, I dont like Bethdesa's design philosophy, for many reasons. I like harder more grounded in physics designs myself - I started in industrial design. but trying to portray it as if the entire design styling that is consistently of that style, is because they're all noguns liberal homosexuals, or whatever, is utterly fricking idiotic.

Yes, we know they did a shit job and don't know guns. If their incompetence is on purpose, that doesn't make it better. Nobody is talking about retrofuturist aesthetic moron, no need to write a blog about it. I can tell you worked on videogames because you missed the point and spewed an autism-wall about it.

It's the same people that pretend to know Fallout 1 and 2s aesthetic when the writers themselves said that it was retro50s futurism combined with whatever else they happened to like at the time.
Tim Cain himself said he didn't even that it had a theme and that he didn't expect Fallout 2 to succeed.

I think the MBT-70 would have been an even better inspiration. It's pretty futuristic-looking and crammed full of 'advanced' gadgets that wouldn't be out of place in Fallout's technologically weird timeline, and enough government/engineering mismanagement to have some fun backstory lore. Stuff mini-nukes into the anti-tank missiles and it's gold.

The MBT-70 would make sense, but I like the idea of the US going for the heavy tank route with either T-29 or M103 to counter the Chinese WZ-111 (IS-3). Also, almost no conventional military tech really evolves past the 1950s, with M4 Sherman's and the P80 shooting star still being used until the end of the war.

I think the M4 Sherman was more the result of insurrectionists gearing up with museum pieces before the nukes made it all moot.
P-80 is less excusable as even by the actual 50s there were already better jets to build as either frontline fighters or trainers, even taking into account the lack of microprocessors.
It's a shame they had no autist to try and accurately figure out what the US would make if they couldn't develop fly-by-wire.

The weird thing about it is that the US was still adopting new tech until the end. Power armor, laser and plasma weapons, combat robots, all that shit. But now it's juxtaposed with using mashups of guns from the 1920s-1940s that were obsolete 100 years before. The tone was hard to nail down before, but now it's total schizotech.

                It really isnt hard.

Its not "this is new tech of 2077", its "what would hypertechnology (X) look like, but its designed using the thought processes and design aesthetics of 1952?"

So, that's a power armor from 1952. a lasergun from the 50's, a plasma weapon from the 50's. a robot from the 50's. And so on.

It was hard to nail down because Fallout 1, 2, and even 3 to some extent took inspiration from multiple time periods, from both real history and fiction. They were influenced by 80s and 90s action movies [see all the 'badass' movie guns like the Jackhammer and G11], had art deco architecture, and the cheery 1950s stuff wasn't overwhelming. Then Bethesda decided that the "epic wacky 1950s" dial should go up to 11. And even then they fricked up by not actually having 1950s-inspired weapons.

The real influence that nobody namechecks is 90s comics. The skintight suits with big shoulder pads and bandoleers were essential 90s todd macfarlane/rob liefield character designs. Until they start taking character design cues from old comic books again, its never going to look quiet like the 2d artstyle.

                Imagine.

And it kind of works. There's a massive energy crisis, wars are being fought over resources. The R&D centres developing new weapons are still intact, but the ability to produce is degraded to the point where they only exist in small amounts. Meanwhile people are digging out whatever stockpiles they have, no matter how obsolete, to try and keep up.

Or to use another example: Ukraine. High tech flying death robots and on the same battlefield with BTR-60's and Maxim guns.

How Fallout's military tech should be viewed is the wars of the 21st century from the perspective of someone from the 1950's. A Patton tank fighting alongside powered armor and Vertibirds isn't 'wrong', it's cool.

But the Patton tank being a riveted heap of malformed shit that can't even turn its turret and the dude in power armor carrying a maxim gun from WWI isn't cool. That's the problem. The designs are too goofy to be cool on their own, and they're too backwards to fit the image of 1950s retrofuturism. They fail at both.

I liked to think that the development from T-45 to T-51 power armor was like the transition from M48 to M60, with sleeker lines, more advanced materials, and better engineering. Then T-60 showed up and that was like replacing the M60 with a fatter M48. Bwomp bwomp. I could understand if it were a postwar thing made by the BoS, but they went out of their way to show that it was prewar.

I mean the explanation behind the T-60 is that the T-51 had advanced coatings and shit that made it too expensive for widespread adoption, so the US Army decided to instead produce an improved version of the T-45 (the T-60) as a stopgap until the X-01 suit was able to be fielded.

Yeah well Bethesda says F76 is “canon” so if you play by “license holder makes the rules” you need to fit them in but what you say is true.

T-60 power armor was an absolutely stupid idea. It looks almost 1:1 to the T-45 armor yet it’s supposed to be better than T-51, which was always described as “the pinnacle of protection before the Great War” in F1 and F2.
At least with the advanced power armor (X-1) they had the excuse that the remnant US government were working on them for 100 years after the bombs fell.
By that “pinnacle” description, you have room to make a shittier version, hence the T-45, but adding “oh well there was something else they made too that was even better right at the end and you never saw it until now and everyone has one for some reason” is such a useless cop out but I get it, merchandising and widening world that doesn’t need to be wider.

Fallout simply doesn’t take itself seriously anymore, to them it really is a theme park. F1+2 were goofy when it made sense, but the foundation of the game took itself seriously. Two of the guys who made it were a gay and a israelite and they still didn’t poz it. The Fallout TV show is going to be the indicator of what they want it to be moving forward, catch-all pozzed normie bait, nu-star warsification. Le women strong, Le race mix good, Le silly.
The entire series needs a refresh but it’s too late for that. It’s pure poz now. Now that micropenis owns it they will accelerate how pozzed and worthless it is until everyone hates it.

Especially since they don't even need to make a new game to keep the Brand(tm) alive. The show is going to keep it in public's perception for a while, so they can simply kick back and relax while working on TES 6. With how Slopfield released, though, I have to wonder if they'll learn how to start making an effort again or just continue to plug their ears when it comes to criticism.

According to 3 they were still in the concept phase when the war happened, military hoped to put them into service by 2085. So they do fit in the idea that the enclave basically just built something that hadn't gone through five layers of military testing and government bullshit to standardize it.

Tbf the Enclave had almost 200 years to refine the design, that's why the Advanced Power Armor is legitimately better than anything the Brotherhood has.

If it was in .50, and was specifically meant to be used only with power armor, okay, cool, reminds me of Gundam so I can deal with it. Instead, it's an overbuilt 556 platform and is the primary "Assault rifle" in the game. I wish, just once, that nogunz morons would hire someone with experience to help with their game, rather than just saying "lol doesn't matter" and making everything moronic. Any moron could have told them this was a stupid design for such a small caliber weapon. That thing must weigh 30lbs or more with a full water jacket. All of the compromises of an emplaced full-caliber MG with none of the benefits.

damn, the loss of condition and jamming mechanics really hurt things. having the proper guns be more rare, robust and, expensive and the pipes as more common, flimsy, and cheap would've made things a lot more interesting. i'd settle for ammo types that weren't just slapping a new receiving in the gun and reusing elder scrolls enchantment code, obsidian already did it themselves, it couldn't have been difficult. damn, it's another sink for resources too, having to manage cleaning and repair kits and the resources for making them.

No it has to look ridiculously caveman stupid so normies understand it’s “improvised”.
I also don’t think it’s necessary for Fallout world to have that many improvised rifles. Some sure.
98 percent of the population is dead and hundreds of millions of pistols, rifles, and more are littering the USA. You probably have 5,000,000 or less people to 700,000,000 or more guns nationwide. It makes a lot more sense to raid homes, gun stores and military bases for weapons than building a pipe gun from scratch.
The “gun runners” also exist and claim to manufacture new weapons, or at the very least repair old world guns.
What are the “raiders” even raiding in fallout 4?
I think it would be a more interesting idea to have hobbled together old world guns that you fix up as your repair skill gets better. I’d imagine that’s how survivors of a nuclear war would be operating unless they were truly desperate for a gun which doesn’t seem likely in that kind of world.

Amazing. As I said, the future of fallout is in the hands of modders. The spoon as a rear sight is a nice touch.

Depending on condition of guns after 200 years, we might get clones like Pakistan https://youtu.be/MpzrIL5p16U?si=HTIBj3daNmPdorww or Philippines 1911s. They might tear a rusty gun apart to learn cloning or for replacement parts. I assume few are like The Pitt and have functional factories. Some communities like New Canaan have lots of gunsmiths who produce homemadeguns at very high quality too. It's a fortunate miracle Graham never passed the. 45 design to the Legion.

This isn’t true. They made a spectacle of unarmed and melee warfare to hurt morale of the enemy but they obviously use guns, even an ”advanced” artillery cannon.

I think the biggest missed opportunity was to not make the legion elite marksmen using guns, like a truly disciplined military of old. Firing lines and the whole 9 yards.

Make them deadly at range and close up but kind of shit at mid range.

Instead they made the rangers the sniper guys.

IMO the Legion needed more improvised explosives like molotovs or homemade explosives. It can be justified as a tribal concoction. Also, real life staff-slings were found in inventory records of early medieval sieges. They aren't as iconic as bows and arrows but IRL slings are still used in modern day during riots. A staff-sling would surely be able to throw a homemade explosive a greater distance than an arm.

They do use guns or even advanced tech. They made deals with Van Graffs for lasers. What they aren't into are tech that "diminish the sacrifice" or the human side. Theoretically, they'd be okay with lightsabers and ray guns but not medicine besides tribal solutions and no robots. A bit hypocritical but that's the Legion.

In a weird way, they're like Treize from Gundam Wing only they don't hate ranged weapons.

It also begs the question, if there is enough industrial capacity to manufacture new guns, why isn’t the world organizing into a better state after 200 years?

California is an established environment, hell it mostly already was in Fallout 2 decades earlier. The game simply doesn't take place in California where the NCR is actually a functioning system. Criticizing all of the NCR for how it handles the Nevada which isn't its territory is like criticizing how democracy works in the US by how the troops handled things on the ground in Iraq, something that I wonder if it was on the mind of the writers as the Iraq War was still going on when the game was made.

the mojave front isn't a small expeditionary force. they are actively trying to annex the region and have thousands of soldiers deployed there. its the lynchpin of kimballs political campaign and an important part of the warhawks policies. it just so happens that not every senator is a warhawk, the NCR is riddled with incompetents, ran by special interests, and they have serious supply issues.

it'd be more like if the mexician american war ended up with a stalemate across the rio grande with mexician forces raiding across. not that great an example but the best I can think of.

Sensibly, it would be in a higher caliber with larger magazine capacity. You wouldn't be talking shit if I told you it's a 20mm autocannon wieldable only by Steel behemoths. I'm still confused why the gun needs to exist. You got power armor and want a weapon that looks big in it. Pre-war you'd have lasers and miniguns. Post-war power armor is rare so you are an oddball lucky son of a b***h for finding functional power armor but no good weapons.

I'm gonna be honest. I always thought the minigun was stupid, even in 1 and 2. At least it was chambered in 5mm from what I remember and you usually needed high str or power armor to wield it. If anything, a portable m2 .50 always seemed like the better option or even an water-cooled lmg in .308 for ridiculous amounts continuous fire. miniguns just seem like ammo being pissed away, people don't move fast enough to justify it.

They probably thought minigun use intermediate round because of the word "mini" and many movie scene of people one handing it. It was the 90's so I think I can understand.

      >f anything, a portable m2 .50 always seemed like the better option

It always came across to me as a weapon first and foremost intended for Super Mutants to use which would shred anyone who headed west out of Vault 13 in the first round, dealing over 100 damage
The fact that the gun is also technically available for humans is an afterthought
Mechanically speaking, it's basically just a better 10mm SMG, which is probably the most impressive weapon of the early game for how it can turn pretty much anyone into a special death animation in one burst.

      Here's your Fallout 5 10mm:

I think it’s ludicrously oversized specifically to be used in power armor.

The solution to all of this is to only make “big” weapons work in power armor, then you can keep all the designed while balancing the game at the same time.

I'm sure this is the answer. All of the models and animations are designed with gorilla Black person power armor hands in mind, so they're all huge and awkward. That's why the 10mm is like the size of your thigh. Combine it with nogunz artists slapping things together without understanding, and you get Fallout 4's special blend of moronation.

      https://i.imgur.com/RIvwzA7.jpg

They bungled that so damn hard by having an artist who clearly knew frick-all about guns come up with all the variants. It was a cool concept, but very poorly executed.

given the fact that 9mm irl is 9mm *parabellum* and in the fallout universe WW2 didn't really end the same way, it would make sense. if NATO wasn't formed the same way, and STANAG didn't go down how it did, then 9mm would probably be called .38 American or some shit.

Its just called 9mm in fallout 2. Though it is extremely rare, so I figure it was a boutique hipster round compared to 10mm in their timeline.

That’s how I interpret it so all the gun mods that use .38 instead of 9x19 for gameplay purposes don’t hurt my brain. Similarly, 10mm is a potential .40 S&W stand-in

There was even talks of it seeing military adoption before the FBI ditching it in 97 put a damper on that, same reason its the standard round in Deus Ex. I don't see why you would need to rationalize its presence.

10mm pistol in NV does 22 damage, the .45 does 29. Either the 10mm is more like real life .40 Short&Weak or the .45 is way overbuffed. I'd believe either one.

                Anonymous

A bit of both, I'd say (but mostly the latter). 10mm pistol is an early game weapon (and still head and shoulders above the 9mm) whereas .45 is a DLC weapon you're only supposed to get at mid-to-high levels.

                Anonymous

                They could have done what
                [...]
said and called it “Soviet Assault Rifle” or “Russian Assault Rifle” if they were worried about it.
The “Service Rifle” from New Vegas is an AR-15, are they getting sued by Colt?

The tank would win in a straight fight on even ground, since it would be able to crack open the PA user easily compared to another tank. The PA guy might be able to take advantage of his mobility, cover, and concealment to get a drop on the tank though. The enhanced strength would allow him to carry some nasty big anti-tank weaponry, too.

I highly doubt PA could stop sabot or even HEAT so you're still very limited in direct engagements. I'm not sure if jetpacks are canon prewar but if they are then that's a clear anti-tank advantage assuming they even train for "manual top-attack". Having PA means you're safe from any small arms fire so you can be a bit more brazen with attacking tanks as long as you can acquire target faster than them. PA has a pretty big stealth advantage in size and sound but lack a lot of speed, so I think the winning strategy would still be to use normal infantry tactics. I wonder if AT PA units are equipped with something like man-portable 100mm recoilless rifles. Man, imagine a PA trooper holding an M40 modified to be shoulder-mounted.
Now I'm really curious how a "power armored infantry" division would be structured. According to the wiki power armor was standard issue (or they tried to make it so) so it could have been a simple "retrofit" to order everyone to wear the armor and maybe equip MGs with miniguns and grenadiers with Fat Mans.
I also notice a huge flaw in PA is that they still require vehicles for faster mobility. There's at least one APC in FO4 that have one PA suit barely fitting inside. I can't imagine they'd only send a single PA unit but the compartment is so small that they could maybe fit 4-6 or so at best. Not too bad but clearly a major weakpoint.

        Anonymous

        >I wonder if AT PA units are equipped with something like man-portable 100mm recoilless rifles.
I dont think they had anything unique to them. The rocket launchers in the 2d fallouts were easily used without powered armor and the missile launcher in F3 is shown to be used by regular infantry in anchorage, plus in NV has lower strength requirements than some of the shotguns. If they did have something for AT that would capitalize on their increased lifting capability, it hasn't appeared yet. Based on purely gameplay, the fatman is survivable while wearing PA so its likely even less effective against a tank.

          Anonymous

Completely forgot about the missile launcher. I'm not a fan of the idea, but obviously there's no tanks in Fallout so there's never been a need for an expansive anti-armor armory.
I was browsing the wiki (too much) trying to see if what I said made sense and one lore snippet said the Fat Man was made to be used against "reinforced and entrenched positions," so yeah, more aimed towards anti-infantry.

Adding to this, the human factor will always be a weaker link. The armor might survive but the wearer dead or at least concussed unconscious.

BoS was equipped with rocket/missile launchers in F1 and they and the encrab have tesla cannons in later games, so one of those. More likely rocket launchers given tesla tech seemed a recent thing pre-war.

        >mobility
PA has the advantage of not making their wearers tired when traversing terrain, at least, but its still a very valid concern.

Kinda dissapointing how bethesda managed to ruin their biggest cash cow outside of maybe TES but thats corpos for you
        >organization
impossible to know but logically smaller given they take up more transport space then regular infantry.

        >size in APC
at least two (that's how many paladins can spawn out of it in F4), but power armor is way more effective then regular infantry in every aspect besides fitting in smaller spaces. I imagine the regular power armor squad would only be 4-6 people, because you can equip them all with heavier weapons to cover all the weakspots made by their low numbers. given pre-war US tech is schizo throughout the games I'll use BoS equipment in FNV for an example

1 PA with tribeam for assaulting and BTFOing people who try to get in close.
1 PA with laser minigun/minigun for crowd control and suppression
1 PA with gauss rifle to eliminate hostile anti-PA teams, damage to vehicles, and range.
And then one spare that you can outfit with either a tribeam or laser gatling depending on your circumstance.

You can edit this around by swapping the generic weapons for more specialized ones like previously discussed tesla cannons or rocket launchers or adding a few more suits to get up to that six 'limit'.

Speaking of the six limit, a squad loadout for that could be:

        2 PA with tribeam
        2 PA with gatling laser/minigun
        1 PA with gauss rifle
        1 PA with rocket launcher

PA also provides environmental protection, which could be used with Fatmans to create area denial against infantry.

            Anonymous

I forgot about it, yeah. Given how sucky pre-war countries were it's very likely that both the US and china were using chemical and radiological warfare, which power armor at least partially negates, certainly way better then an infantryman with a gas mask.

      Anonymous

Definitely tank. PA only wins against chinks because they rely on human wave and small fast moving armour where tanks are at disadvantage. There's no way power armour can stop a sabot or even mere HEAT rounds.
