Do you know what size gun is meant to be up there? If you shoot a bigger gun than the one that's hiding, you might spook the smaller one into revealing its position

Handgun, likely a hi-point, can I shoot my HK up there and cause it to have an inferiority complex?

All an HK will do is make it laugh, but if it works, it works.

Its likely going to be buried in the insulation or possibly tucked behind a board. Keep us updated.

There were a few promising loose boards and some plastic bags sticking out of the insulation but no dice yet, not sure how far in it is but it's a hassle to get through there so I imagine not super far.

    Metal detector.
Or alternatively, a strong magnet on a fishing pole. Don't cast like an idiot and kick up fiberglass. Just kinda eave it overtop. You'll know when you get a hit.

Got a magnet strapped to a long ass pole right now, it's just a massive attic and I have no idea where to start

one corner and then do the rest.

Just go from below and start ripping out the ceiling. It's the only way.

Why was a gun hidden in the attic to begin with?
I would think it would be nearer the entrance so that it would be accessible.

Why not get a metal detector and search from underneath? ie, scan the ceilings of the rooms directly below the attic?

That was my first idea, I just don't know anything about metal detecting. What do I need to get to make sure it's not triggered by nails or other bits of metal, and that it can detect through wood and plaster.

Even a basic metal detector has a diacrimination setting. By adjusting the sensitivity and practicing on some junk outside, you should be able to find it with the cheapest My First Metal Detector.

Touch every piece of wood till you find something that feels a bit too flimsy.

im going to assume whoever hid it, just put it on top of one of the wood beams where it cant be seen. I dont know why anyone would bury it or put it in a false wall.
its a gun not a gold bar.

or more likely put it close to the entrance for easy retrieval.

This (assuming it's not a crime gun or something). it's someplace unnoticed, but still easy to access.

Go on YouTube and play sounds of gunshots being fired. If you play enough sounds of gunshots in the same family of weapons as the gun your looking for, you can lure it out as it will seek it's kin and capture it.

Call the atf and let them know your great dead uncle said he hid an automatic machine gun up there. They'll tear it apart for you

If you have a dog make sure they're at a friend's house

The metal gun is a thermal mass and should change temp differently than the rest of materials. Thermal vision at dawn, it will also give you a rough outline of the other large thermal masses so you do not waste time.

Tell the ATF there is a stock attached to a pistol somewhere in your attic. You may need a new house and dog afterward but they'll find it.

Just burn the house down and sift the ashes, if there's a gun you'll find it.
