Hello, i'm currently writing a book and there's a flogging scene in it.

Hello, i'm currently writing a book and there's a flogging scene in it. I don't want to exaggerate so i ask you, how many flogs can a man endure before dying, give or take? A hundred? Two hundreds?

    You must be Br*tish.
Cat o' nine tails (pic related) would kill you far before 100 lashes

Men have survived as much as 500 lashes. Rarely though.

Is getting whipped once with the cat basically like getting whipped nine times?

        Anonymous

the cat is used to describe all types of whips by account, but any of the whips with multiple knots i.e. not smooth, would tear chunks out of you to the bone after the first few lashes

The tails were "enhanced" with knots along their length, and sometimes the knots were tied around bits of bone or metal. So imagine each of the 9 tails were basically barbed wire and you get the idea of how unpleasant and dangerous they could be.

Most people might die before 10 lashes, almost certainly before 20, anyone surviving any longer was an exception

20 is usually enough to put someone in a hospital for up to a month. A hundred or more would permanently cripple someone if they didn’t just fricking die.
Often a doctor would be on hand to check for every few lashes and had the authority to stop the punishment if needed.

The other thing to remember is even if the man survives the flogging he might not survive the infection after. The worse the flogging the more likely he dies afterwards.

      How were the wounds treated?

        Anonymous

well that was back when smearing other people's puss into your wounds so that you could produce your own puss was a good thing.

it was believed that puss was an important part of the healing process....

Literally with salt. "Rubbing salt in their wounds" was actually for the prisoner's own good.

Different kind of flogging, executed by someone who knows how to draw it out by minimizing the impact effect.

    >Drunkenness could be punished by a dozen lashes, which could be administered on the authority of the ship's captain. Greater punishments were generally administered following a formal court martial, with Royal Navy records[which?] reflecting some standard penalties of two hundred lashes for desertion, three hundred for mutiny, and up to five hundred for theft.[citation needed] One blow was sufficient to take off the skin, and to draw blood wherever the knots fell. Three dozen was a common punishment. Three hundred lashes were frequently given.[5] The offence of sodomy generally drew the death penalty, though one eighteenth century court martial awarded a punishment of one thousand lashes – an equivalent sentence as it would likely be fatal.
jesus fricking christ why were the bongs so barbaric?

I assume the punishers had to trade off. Whipping someone 300 times sounds like torture unto itself.

      >jesus fricking christ why were the bongs so barbaric?
Excessively cruel and inventive punishments were pretty common historically around the world. Look up the "breaking wheel" for instance. The Bongs being an island made them relatively harder to invade, so the local military aristocracy was able to tax their peasants more heavily and buck break them more thoroughly. Japan was similar.

clearly you've never heard of the dutch navy if you think that's a bad punishment. They'd either maroon you to your death or keelhaul you.

      >Loos [a mutineer] and a cabin boy, Jan Pelgrom de Bye, who were considered only minor offenders, were marooned on mainland Australia, and were never heard of again
      >On 1 December 1727 three of the ship's company reported to the captain that they had found two of the ship's boys, Adriaan Spoor from Sint-Maartensdijk and Pieter Engelse from Ghent, "engaged in the gruesome play of Sodom and Gomorrah" together the previous afternoon.[7]
      >After an unsuccessful attempt was made to elicit a confession from the two by putting burning fuses between their fingers, the captain and his council found the boys guilty of having committed sodomy together. They were sentenced to death and marooned, each boy on a separate island, on 2 December.[8][7]

why did the dutch hate cabin boys so much?

Depends how hard the executioner strikes the victim.

People can die from as little as a dozen and can bu as high as several hundreds.

There are info from Muslim countries that use caning still today for reference.
