peak turtle tank will be like a 100-200mm thick shell of laminated basalt fiber, that'll take some serious abuse if you use ceramic-infused resins

what purpose do these cladded tanks serve?

First ones were made for tanks that had broken turrets so they could say least be used as troop transport. Then russian milbloggers and media hyped them up as breakthrough wunderweapons that are impervious to Javelin and drones and now every tanker wants one because they are idiots.

I genuinely think that the meme was perpetuated (at least in part) by Ukrainian and/or Western intelligence agencies to trick Russians into spending time and effort on making their tanks worse (lower visibility, heavier and chug through fuel faster, can't turn their turrets now, harder for vatniks to escape if the vehicle catches fire, etc.).

4 out of 4 turtle tanks destroyed by FPV drone. While the whole point of turtling tank up was to protect them from FPV drones. Why don't they stop? It's clearly useless.

        https://i.imgur.com/hL6Qu56.jpeg

Genuinely speaking here, turtle tanks have started to deeply disturb me. After I saw that battle inside that nuclear power plant in March 2022 I knew nothing in this war would ever shock me or surprise me again but the turtle tanks are really unsettling for me.

Think about this, think about all the memes all the comments, conversations and jokes and memes about RU armor and its ridiculous improvised adaptations in this war. And now think and realize that nobody in none of these conversations or commentary expected or imagined the turtle tanks. People thought the Russians were going to bring the T-34M obr. 2024 into existence before they thought up a turtle tank.

Now if two and a half years into the war the Russians have cooked up such a bizarre, degenerate aberration, imagine what they're going to come up by next year. Or by 2026.

What's next, T-54s fueled by liquidated human flesh? Opening up the mobilization to 60+ year old russian women? North Korean slave soldiers bought by the boatload in Vladivastok?

        >North Korean slave soldiers bought by the boatload in Vladivastok?

I really dont know, ive reached the conclusion that the russians, when confronted to a stupid decision they made, instead of admitting they made a mistake, they double down

Of course turtle tanks were a dumb ideas, but now that everyone hyped them up as these invincible breakthrough tanks that only break DOWN in the middle of an assault, instead of admitting it was a dumb idea and moving on, they keep making them, because rasha cannot be wrong, if rasha is wrong about the turtle tanks, maybe they were wrong about the Kharkiv offensive too, maybe they were wrong about the Kyiv feint, maybe they were wrong about the whole special military frickup altogether, thats the problem with dictatorships, they must appear infallible, otherwise you open the door for questioning everything they do

Carry EV, be invinsible for cheap drones, lead colums. Javelins and other ATGMs are much easier are dealt with as they expose the operator.

Now 3 tanks in each company must be converted to the BARN upgrade variant, it's unironically official.

Ukraine still seems to have an acute lack of actual moden AT weapons, at least in some part of the front where these type of modified tanks are used.
My best guess is that because the drone can only carry a small and shitty payload (PG-7VL warheads I think) which means that this type of shitty stand-off armor can be used both to protect from these drone impacting the tanks and maybe conceal some of the EWAR jammers they're mounting on these tanks.
If they are faced with any actual modern weapons like Javelins, APFSDS ammo or tandem heat rounds they'll get cooked without knowing what hit them.
Also pretty sure that these driving sheds are done by some reservist moronic combat engineers in-theater with what they have available. Pretty sure you can put actual caged armor all over, but that would mean more welds, forethought on where to put the stand-off posts and actual material availability.

Overall these things are laughable, but I have to wonder why they're being used in the first place, because apparently they're effectively countering the shitty FPV drones launched against them.

This has a history of backfiring. Artifacts of particularly intense Russian aesthetic tend to activate Uke commanders' ancient hording mentality and they slap bounties on them. So good for the tank bad for any Russians in a one km radius of it.

I was thinking on whether there could be a model of this insanity that can actually reliably protect against drones from most sides.
Imagine this. Very long thin metal rods (like radio antennas but much longer) that are so imbalanced that they sway in the wind, entwined with wire fence, tons of them, like a hedgehog. Instead of the drone reaching the target, it wound get stuck inside the mess of wobbly spikes and wire net.
Naturally, this trades missile defense down to zero. But it could stop FPVs.
This is my TOP IQ take on the subject.

We're going to start seeing Russian women ripped apart in drone videos and then the board will be flooded with goregays. I'm calling it.

Oh, god, that would be _unbearable_ if it ever came to fruition

I think it's because we believed the Russians wouldn't try to convert unusable (inoperable gun or turret) tanks into APC's. We imagine using the tank as a tank.
Honestly seeing the numbers of destroyed civilian cars and other improvisational troop transports the Russians are fielding I legitimately don't know how much longer they'll have anything worth using. I think if this war drags on another year the Russians will be welding old boiler plates to chinese cars they had to import.

I was thinking something more like those trucks on Alibaba for a few thousand bucks, or maybe just cheap-ass civilian sedans.
This park groundskeeper's UTV is embarrassing but at least it can drive offroad.

Forgetting theory of operation is hilarious. The mods enhance opponent ability to kille the crew.

That makes sense. If there wasn't videos of shed tanks that have moving turrets. Or, practically speaking, moving cannons...

Wait, there are? I haven't seen a single turtle tank use its main gun.

The one in OP's video does. I think they might have STARTED OUT doing this using tanks with broken guns as makeshift APCs, but then the turtle tank hype started up (possibly amplified by false-flaggers) and now some mobiks are just doing it to whatever tank they have because they think it makes them invincible.

The video I'm thinking of it doesn't fire but it moves the barrel. It's taken by the Russians next to the meme tank.

People are presuming way too much thinking on the part of the Russians making these.

It's the very apathetic, nihilist lack of ethics that lead to that famous USSR productivity rate. "We pretend to work and they pretend to pay us". Some general in some RU Ground Forces Corp writes in some order that they need to armor up the tanks. Soldiers are left to fend for themselves to do something to fulfill that. One guy figures out that making a massive box over the tank using whatever the frick you can find at the surviving motorpool "armors up the tank" and does it. Others see it and copy it.

"But it barely does anything and ruins the tank" yeah but it does do something right? Armor is armor, *drinks the third bottle of vodka of the day while its still sunlight".

What's up with the little plows in front of the tracks? What purpose does that serve?

Mine plow. The idea is to dig any mines out of the ground and have them blow up in front of the tank instead of under it. There are mine rollers and mine flails too, but the plow is probably the hardest to counter.

    This is all nerd's fault
I bet politicians and soldiers wanted tanks that had armor protection from all sides and engineering armchair strategist nerds went "hmm ackshually only the front needs armor since its statistically the only place they should get fired at in perfect conditions the rest should be aluminium thick so the tank can go 80km an hour on highways which is really important " and now you have tanks with 1000mm of steel equivalent protection on the front getting destroyed by alibaba drones dropping a panzerfaust produced in a shed in 19th century Siberia and taking out your stupid 10 million dollar machine

      Define "work"
It prevents a turret ring 1 shot 1 flight kind of kill, which is good for the crew. It doesn't do much for the tank attrition rate as a whole
