Maybe the Bin laden raid? But, they lost an entire helicopter. Though you may be able to blame that on SOAR

Losing a helicopter in the Bin Laden raid was payback for getting 8 Night stalkers killed in Red Wings - By 2005 Seals had already become too fat and moronic to walk and needed SOAR to transport them 5 feet away from wherever they were going

50/50 blame split, between the dipshits who built the training mockup compound with a chain link fence instead of a solid wall, and the SOAR pilot who couldn't recognize the aerodymanic difference this made

They're great at shit involving boats and murky water, at least from what I have heard. They fall short on land as we saw during GWOT.

They were always and are still really great at funny boat stuff and the time honored smash and grab.
The mistake was trying to make them into an actual force multiplier, that's not what they are. It would be like sending in a paratrooper shock force as ground infantry.

      >It would be like sending in a paratrooper shock force as ground infantry.

What? A paratrooper on the ground IS ground infantry. Just well trained.

Not really, and that mindset is the problem. Paratroopers are one-time highly mobile light infantry, and after they are deployed they are about as useful as regular light infantry in the grand scheme of things. They aren't 'bad' but they absolutely need to be used appropriately and are not interchangeable with or an upgrade over regular infantry at all. Everyone points to Bastogne as an example of how effective paratroopers are, but the fact is the Battle of the Bulge was a clusterfrick and if you're in a situation where you need paratroopers to save your ass on the ground then someone needs to get fired or shot - here is looking at you, Germany circa 1944.

Someone give me some good MACV stories!
And repost the one where the perfectly English-speaking Russian guy relays on-channel to the forward team that he has their 4-grid coordinate and he responds "FRICK YOUR MOTHER I'LL GIVE YOU MY EIGHT GRID COORDINATE XXXX:XXXX COME GET ME"

any truth to the shit i read in a random ass message board years ago about the black face paint being shit the nam seal officers bought from Mabelline and the green shit being the regular stuff that caused your face to break out on contact?

How can you tell if these guys are actually navy seals and not lrrp or green berets? Because I keep seeing the same images when I try to look up US special forces in Vietnam.

i usually have trouble picking out lrrps and stuff like marine recon unless they're showing the side where the lrrps would have their unit patch on. but seals tend to stand out. blue jeans on some, operating near water or outright standing on boats. those blue life vest. stoner machine guns, no packs since their missions tended to last only a few hours before they where back home.

They weren't good then either. Google the casualty rates macvsog etc took and how they constantly depended on air support bailing them out of failed plans.

There is no substitute for well trained conventional infantry in conventionally-sized units.

The average 11B private fresh out of basic with 3 months in a mech unit would avoid a lot of the mistakes they made.
It was the Korean War experience all over again. American individualism and can-do attitude went sour when combined with sloth, overconfidence, and competent enemies; and drama ensued. If the whole program had been avoided nothing of value would have been lost.

Ofc then you wouldn't get to have larpo fantasies about everyman supercommandos with random civilian bringbacks mining farmers trails before getting unceremoniously hunted down.

I kinda just don't really get what the SEAL niche is anymore. Past two decades everything been pretty much entirely land warfare focused stuff where they are largely redundant, and it seems like their maritime niche could be covered by marines, granted it might be challenging to teach a marine to chart a hydrographic recon map without eating the crayons but surely they can find a few guys that could wait to eat them until after the job is done right?
