Indoors only? A neighbour had to stop his outdoors chicken farm due to bird flu problems.

      Yes.

I've heard about quail. Seems smaller birds make sense in or near cities.

Implying you sex a lot of chicks on PrepHole ...
But when you say black, you mean all black? Like everything? That's a highly valuable genetic anomaly.

I had a chick not to long ago that had strong barring, but when it pinned the feathers didn't pop like a roosters would.Very hard to sex. These recent hatchs are all very dark and low barring.

But not all black. It's just very obvious their all female (I know about the black chickens you speak. Sadly mine aren't completely black. That would be cool to see happen tho.)

my local city says i can have 1 chicken per 500 square feet of property. my lot is 6000 but the actual yard is quite small. also it cant be within 50 feet of another house but were pretty well packed in. You guys think i could get away with a couple hens for eggs?

Perhaps but not worth the hassle.

That's too small a lot, dude. You can keep them in a garage, if you really want them.
Had mine in garage while on holiday. Obviously in a small netted area.
I'd recommend quail if you lack space.

I'm hatching birds for the first time this year. Bought a hoverboard 1588. Throwing in some test mutt eggs. In a few weeks I'll see how they hatch and be a little more picky about what I put in there after.

Chickens need about 10sqf per bird in a chicken run. I bet you could make enough room for 4-6 birds. You'll have to manage the poo more than if they had room but that's just free compost

thanks fella. my whole backyard is maybe 12 feet by 50ish feet, i was thinking of taking out my tool shed or insulating and fitting it to work as a chicken coop. I might just ask/warn them Im getting a couple hens and no rooster, maybe give them a dozen eggs here or there to sweeten the deal

It's not like they're loud at night. Though some can get rather uppity at times with other hens, usually only lasts a minute.

I'm so jealous of you Black folk.
I just want some property where I can raise animals and grow crops, while fricking around and automating tasks at home.

going to build a coop this spring after i get my property fenced - looked into a few breeds, but is anybody doing breed that are good for both meat & eggs?
my plan is to keep a dozen or so hens for eggs, and hatch/raise some for meat as well.

Serious chicken fanciers should avoid PrepHole and instead goto serious places like the backyard chickens forum. There is no reason to want subjects better covered elsewhere on PrepHole when it is more useful for quick superficial answers to minor problems and of course for bunkertainer autism.

Chickens are easy to care for but because board pollution that sort of discussion should be on moderated fora.

Poopybutt is hit or miss. I had a whole batch (8) where every single one of them got massive dingleberries. Another (6) where not a single one sharted it's feathers. I think it might have something to do with humidity tbh
